Guinea Pig
Fandom: Case closed/Detective Conan
Characters: Heiji Hattori and Kazuha Toyama
Pairing: Heiji x Kazuha
I also posted it on AO3
Heiji and Kazuha stood in his partensā garden. It was a warm evening, no clouds in the sky and a light breeze let the leaves rustle. His hands were sweaty and his heart was racing.
Heiji couldnāt believe it. He has just done it. Only a second ago.
He has confessed to Kazuha and nobody has interrupted him. They werenāt at a romantic place, no big words were said but he told her about his feelings. Yes. Finally!
How was this even possible? He was so shocked about this, that he didnāt notice how she frowned. Only when she started to walk in his direction, his attention came back on her.
Why⦠why was she looking so sad?
āNoā, she finally said when she only stood a few inches away and looked right in his eyes.
He blinked.
āHuh?ā
āNoā, she repeated with a harsh voice, her eyes full of fury now.
What? Did something happen while he was confessing? He wouldnāt be surprised.
He looked around but couldnāt find a reason for her strange reaction.
So he asked: āWhat do you mean: no?ā
āIām not your guinea pig for your big love confession.ā
He blinked again. Please what?
āAre you kidding me?ā, he cried. This woman was⦠unbelievable.
āNo, Iām not! I know, Iām like an older sister to you butā¦ā
āStop saying this!ā
āWhy?ā
āBecause itās creepy. Youāre not my sister and I donāt see you as one.ā
āBut weāre childhood friends. We grew up together and Iām the one who watches after you.ā
āYou donāt have to wa- no, thatās not the point.ā He paused. This was too much.
Here they stood. Only a few inches away, face to face. Without a problem he could bend down and kisses her. Damn, he wished he could do it right now.
But what was she doing? Talking bullshit.
It really was pathetic.
āWhy are you always so dense?!ā This wasnāt what he wanted to say, but those were the first words which came into his mind.
āDense? Whoās dense?ā she asked and dug her finger into his chest.
āDo you know how much it hurts to be the love confession guinea pig for the guy you love yourself?ā She stopped and jumped back. Definitely panicked by her own words.
And Heiji had to blink again.
Now she confessed back without realizing that he loved her too? Oh gosh. How bad could their communication be?
āDamn it!ā He closed the gap between them, grabbed her by her shoulders and said: āThis confession was for you, you dumbass!ā
Her eyes grew wide and her face went all red.
āW-what?ā she screamed in disbelief.
āBut⦠but you said that you needed my help when you asked me to come over.ā
Heiji sighed and let her go.
āYes. Yes, I said that. And I meant it. But then you were standing in this garden, the sunset in your back and I thought: now or never.ā
Now his face turned red but he kept eye contact.
āSo, you do really love me?ā
āYeah!ā Was this so hard to understand?
Kazuhaās eyes filled with tears and Heiji thought he said it out loud.
āPlease ⦠donāt cry. I di-ā
āI wonāt cry. I just canāt believe it. I was so sure you were in love with someone else.ā
āNow you must be kidding me.ā
He saw that her tears disappeared and she got angry.
āNo. How should I know that you meant me when we were at the shrine? I even asked you and you didnāt say a word.ā
āI had thought this was obvious but then you talked about this sister bullshit again and I didnāt know how to react.ā
Well, that brought her up short.
Heiji waited a moment but she kept silent. Thank goodness.
āWell, you love me and I love you. Correct?ā
Kazuha nodded.
āWill you be my girlfriend then?ā
She nodded again but was still silent.
Heiji was unsure what he should do next. He was beyond happy of course but Kazuha only looked at him and didnāt say anything. He got nervous.
Finally he broke the silence and asked: āMaybe we shouldā¦ā
āDo you want to kiss?ā, she blurred out, her cheeks blushed.
Heiji's jaw dropped. Hell yes, he wanted to kiss her so badly. He has wanted to kiss her for so long.
He cleared his throat to calm down.
āIf you wish.ā
āHeiji!ā
He smiled and bowed down to her.
Her lips were soft and a warm feeling grew in his stomach while she was wrapping her arms around his neck. It was a short but sweet first kiss and definitely the best moment of his life.

Heizuhaweek 1
I read the other storys from @heizuhaevents Day 1 and kinda had the urge to reverse the 'who helps whom' thing. š xD
So just a little thing:
oOo
"You're sidetracking again!" complained Kazuha as she squinted at Heiji's notepad, where he was writing - or rather should be writing - his art homework. Instead, there was another one of his sketches emblazoned there. She couldn't see what exactly he had drawn, though, because he quickly turned the notepad away from her.
"I'm not!" he claimed stubbornly. Kazuha narrowed her eyes. Had his cheeks turned slightly red, or was she just imagining it? Maybe it was from the heat, they'd been stuck in this stuffy room for far too long anyway. That was also the reason why she was getting so impatient.
"You're supposed to be analyzing the picture, not scribbling something." They could have been at the beach by now, jumping into the waves, but no, the dear gentleman just wasn't getting off the ground. Pretty ironic considering that he was usually the one urging them to finish their homework quickly so they could go somewhere. Heiji might be good at quite a few subjects, but art wasn't one of them, at least not the writing part. On the other hand, he was actually pretty good at drawing, but that was precisely the problem. He preferred to draw instead of getting the essay done.
"I am not doodling, and besides, it's not my fault that this assignment is so stupid," Heiji grumbled. "I have no idea what's so special about a few strokes on an otherwise white canvas." And just making something up went against his honor as a detective.
Kazuha rolled her eyes and settled down next to him to help him out a bit, otherwise they'd never be able to leave. "The horizontals and verticals bring stability to the image, while the diagonals add dynamism," she explained as Heiji hastily turned the pages. He must be really embarrassed by his scribbles, she thought. She would have liked to catch a glimpse of it.
Now, after only a blank sheet was visible, Heiji was back to his old self and wrinkled his nose. "You can really write that crap down for every picture. Why should we repeat ourselves a thousand times?"
"If this 'crap' is just repetitive, why don't you just write it down the same as last time and you'd finally be done?" retorted Kazuha. "I'm going to die in the heat!"
"I'm hurrying," Heiji growled. No talking back, at least; the heat had to be getting to him, too. Kazuha sighed and pushed the door open a bit.
"I'll get us some ice and then I'll help you." She too could think better with a cool head.
Since the whole thing wasn't an offer but just a communication about their next steps, Heiji didn't thank her, he didn't have to. They both kept it that way, and when he helped Kazuha with her math again, he didn't expect it from her either.
Indeed, the ice not only helped against the heat, but also soothed his nerves so that he was less reluctant to do the art assignment. Maybe it was Kazuha's proximity too, but all that mattered was that things were moving faster and soon they would finally be able to jump into cool water at the beach.
oOo
What do you think did he draw?

The summer holidays had just started, and since it was way too warm for anything else, Heiji and Kazuha had met up with Ran and Conan at the beach.
Now, Heiji and Conan were sitting in the sand, discussing something that Kazuha wouldnāt even pretend to be interested in.
She and Ran were standing at the waterline, the waves washing around their feet, but Kazuha couldnāt really enjoy it.
She had bought a new bikini just for this occasion, but it seemed like Heiji didnāt even notice.

Donāt Leave Me
This is for day 3 Heizuha Week @heizuhaeventsĀ
She sat in the hotel lobby as she waited for Heiji to check in. It was their first trip together as a couple and after Heiji and Shinichi beat the Black Organization.Ā
She was excited to finally spend time with him, especially since she hasnāt seen him in months. For months she was worried sick, crying every night and every day. She would always wonder whether heās okay or even alive, but now she can make sure he is because sheās never leaving his side. She doesnāt care if itās clingy, after all these depressing and anxious months heās not leaving her side, not even for a second.Ā
āKazuha?ā Heiji called her name,Ā āCome on, I got the room key.āĀ
She got up and followed him to the elevator, then eventually their room. It was a beautiful room, or should she say suite.Ā
āHeiji?ā Kazuha exclaimed,Ā āI thought you booked us a normal room?!āĀ
āWell, I wanted it to be special for us, since you knowā¦ā He looked a bit shy, and Kazuha understood what he meant. The last time theyāve been romantic was when Heiji confessed before leaving for the Black Organization, they shared a kiss but that was it. Ever since he came back, he was in the hospital then court and they had no time to spend together.Ā
She knew that Heiji hated the fact that the confession wasnāt amazing and grand like he expected it to be, Heiji liked to be dramatic. But in Kazuhaās heart it was more than special. She didnāt care about the scenery, or the place, she only cared about him.Ā
She looked around the living room, it had a one big couch and two small others, and it had access to the big balcony that connected to their room.Ā
She went inside the room and blushed at the sight of the king sized bed. Heiji noticed her blush and said,Ā āDonāt worry about it, Iāll sleep on the couch.āĀ
āOh.āĀ
-.-
They walked towards their pool chairs and put their stuff right next to it.Ā
Kazuha didnāt miss the way Heijiās eyes looked at her when she took off her summer dress. She canāt lie and say she didnāt enjoy it, the way he desired her.Ā
She grabbed her sunscreen and rubbed it all over her body to make sure she didnāt get burned on their first day here.Ā
āHeiji? Can you help me and apply the sunscreen on my back? I always get burned there because I canāt put sunscreen there.āĀ
āUhh sure.ā Heiji said, his ears red.Ā
Kazuha lied on her stomach on the pool chair, and to tease him a little she untied the string on her back.Ā
Heiji applied the sunscreen on her back, in a slow motion, almost like he didnāt want it to end.Ā
When he was done, he tied the string back and tapped her on the shoulder so that she would get up.Ā
āThank you, Heiji.ā Kazuha said with a smile.Ā
āN-no problem.ā Heiji said as he was rubbing his neck. The fact that she could see a little redness on his cheeks despite his dark complexion was so cute to her.Ā
āCome on letās go swimming.ā Heiji said and held her hand. Now it was her turn to blush.Ā
He went down the ladder and into the swimming pool, pulling her towards him. She shivered a bit as the water was a bit cold compared to the weather.Ā
Heiji slowly started pulling her to the deep part of the swimming pool till they reached a point where Kazuha wasnāt able to reach the floor anymore and her entire body went underwater. Suddenly she couldnāt breathe, she was suffocating, she couldnāt see anything, she felt like she was dying. Just like when he left.Ā
Heiji pulled her up, and laughed at her.Ā āSeriously Kazuha? Why didnāt you come up, Aho? Did you forget how to swim?ā
āKazuha?āĀ
Heiji was surprised to see her crying, he didnāt understand what just happened. He grabbed her face and made her look at him.Ā
āKazuha whatās wrong? I was just joking I didnāt mean it.ā
Kazuha didnāt know how to explain it. The feelings inside of her just wanted to make her explode. She didnāt want to talk, she wanted to feel him next to her, with her, alive and breathing.Ā
She put her arms around his neck and her legs around his waist and hugged him hard and started crying even harder.Ā
Heiji put his arms around her and hugged her even harder. He was worried sick, what just happened? What did he do wrong?Ā
āHeiji, p-please donāt leave me,ā Kazuha cried out,Ā āPlease donāt leave like you did.āĀ
Heiji laid his head on her before kissing her head gently and said,Ā āNever.āĀ

PROOF THAT SHINRAN IS ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN ROMANCES OF ALL TIME - PART 4
symbolism
disclaimer: gosho's imagery is subtle and therefore often overlooked, so in order to highlight it, i'll be referencing the work of suzanne collins, an author who tends to spell out her metaphors more
sharks
chapter 882-884
how the case begins:
how it progresses:
this isn't gosho's first time exploring the theme of sharks in the manga:
chapter 311
both shinichi and haibara relate to sharks, they're self-admittedly drawn to blood and darkness. but why?
haibara was born into it, she didn't have a choice... and even though she's no longer a part of the black organization, she still carries the past with her.
shinichi on the other hand? he seeks it out. he directly confronts it, because he wants to defeat it. his unfaltering idealism is what pushes him to be a shark.
ran is very idealistic too, which i talk about here. so why doesn't she act like a shark?
"Finnick knows then what Haymitch and I know. About Peeta. Being truly, deep-down better than the rest of us." - Suzanne Collins, Catching Fire Chapter 19
the closest that gosho comes to spelling it out like this, is haibara's line about ran "i'm up against dolphin, one of the most loveable creatures in the ocean"
ran's defined by more than her virtuous nature, she's also unbelievably compassionate and sensitive. that's what makes her a dolphin.
her unmatched kindness is constantly displayed throughout the whole manga.
sometimes it irks shinichi:
chapter 787
sometimes it hurts him:
but most of the time it baffles and touches him:
chapter 258
now i'm going to say something that might be controversial: from what i've gathered, shinichi doesn't just appreciate ran's tender heart... he depends on it.
and i'm not saying that lightly, i'm aware that ran's caring nature affects a lot of dcmk characters - it's the reason why vermouth calls her an angel, why haibara refers to her as a dolphin and sees her as a sister figure, hell, it's the reason why kogoro's able to function most of the time.
but i'd still argue that nobody relies on it the way shinichi does, which brings me to the next symbol i want to analyze:
cherry blossom
flowers can represent a variety of concepts, depending on your source and in what context you use them for your writing. the same rule applies to cherry blossoms.
gosho's used it as symbol for justice in the past:
chapter 687
it's interesting to look at it through that lense, but i don't think that's what the cherry blossom represents for shinichi.
after doing some research, i came to the realization that cherry blossoms are widely believed to symbolize hope and the beginning of spring.
i think that interpretation makes a lot more sense for shinran. especially if we examine their first interaction:
chapter 924
shinichi shows ran his deduction skills to impress her... ironically he ends up impressing everyone but her. shinichi's condescension leads to a full-blown argument:
but then something completely unexpected happens... despite the fact that they don't know each other, despite the fact that shinichi insults ran, despite the fact that ran's completely put off by his arrogance, despite all of that... she offers him a cherry blossom and along with it the kindest smile he's ever seen:
and i just can't help feeling like ran's cherry blossom is symbolically very similar to suzanne's dandelion:
"I found him staring at meĀ from across the school yard. Our eyes met for only a second, then he turned his head away. I dropped my gaze, embarrassed, and thatās when I saw it. The first dandelion of theĀ year. A bell went off in my head. I thought of the hours spentĀ in the woods with my father and I knew how we were going toĀ survive.Ā To this day, I can never shake the connection between thisĀ boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope, and theĀ dandelion that reminded me that I was not doomed. And moreĀ than once, I have turned in the school hallway and caught hisĀ eyes trained on me, only to quickly flit away." - Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games Chapter 3
"What I need to survive is not Galeās fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that." Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay Chapter 27
and clearly, only ran can give that to shinichi...
let me further elaborate by revisiting the shark analogy:
the most beautiful dolphin in the sea sees a shark like him, calls him out on his bluff and instead of avoiding him, she actually welcomes him. ran shows him genuine affection, despite having so many reasons not to. how could he not fall for her?
for someone like shinichi, a cool shark who's able to recognize other predators in the sea from such a young age, seeing the innocence and warmth of a dolphin is pivotal for him, because it reminds him that there's so much more to life than constantly familiarizing himself with other sharks (in his childhood by reading and later by investigating them)... there's good too.
to summarize... shinichi sees a delicate cherry blossom, a gentle dolphin and holds on to her for dear life. he desperately clings to the promise of hope and spring, he depends on her affection and warmth. he needs ran, because without her winter would never end, he'd never escape to coldness of the sea, he'd freeze.
which explains why
a) he's so protective of her
b) ran's smile serves as a compass for shinichi throughout the whole story - while his mind is busy chasing sharks, shinichi's soul is persistently searching for the same smile that strummed his heartstrings all these years ago. which is why he immediately notices when ran's not okay (even though she's very skilled at concealing her pain) and why he always tries to make her feel better
and that's ultimately why
a) shinichi's keeping his identity a secret
b) he's so focused on getting his old body back
without ran, shinichi wouldn't have a constant inner conflict as conan, without her, he'd lack purpose and as a result, detective conan would be empty and lifeless.
ran's not just a love interest y'all...
she's the heart of the entire manga.
visit the shinran library for more
She's the heart of the entire manga. Full stop.
thank you so much for taking the time to read š„°ā¤ļø
My bae @rabbitsrants is back at it again. Honestly, I am trying to study and have a migraine from all the anxiety and stress and seeing a full blown analysis about my favourite couple from my favourite analyst is refreshing. I would like to expand on a few points: Justice: They are each other's moral compass: In volume 74 ( in the anime: The Case of the Besieged Detective Agency Ran closed the blind so that the perpetrator wouldn't die even though every one was at risk. I believe this shows her moral integrity because in the New York arc she felt guilt that she saved Rose from being injured even though she murdered someone else later on and she murdered Heath but she didn't hesitate to save the serial killer despite them killing other people and the logical answer to that is her "aversion to death" which translates to no life is more precious than the other no matter what they have done in life and what their morals are, everyone deserves a chance to life and to pay for their crimes. I guess this ties well with Eri who is a lawyer whose job is to take a case to trail with an unbiased and fresh prospective of the matter and believe who they are representing despite the world thinking otherwise and presenting their unbiased evidence in front of an unbiased jury who get to make their verdict so that both parties get to have a fair chance. After that she did say that Shinichi wouldn't allow anyone to die, meaning that even if everyone would have done otherwise she believes that Shinichi would have taken her side, regardless of his relationship with her.
I think a dolphin is a really good way to describe Ran but I think its also worth exploring the symbolism of her name: Ran as in orchids which signify love, beauty, refinement, many children, thoughtfulness and mature charm and I would like to explore the last one and how it applies to their relationship: Shinichi: His mature charm is that he has the mind of an older person due to his father's influence where she accompanied him to see murder scenes, the books that he read and lets not discredit his genetic composition cause I think that is often overlooked. His very academically smart and has a mind that is trained to put puzzle pieces together and understand the human mind. His own mind is quite complicated, his philosophy in life being intriguing. Ran: due to her self-sufficient nature and motherly care she had to mature quickly and take care of her father. She also takes care of Shinichi not only because she cares about him but also because she is inclined to do so because of his parents living abroad. A similarity between their parents is that they have loving and supportive families who would support their endeavours but more often than not they are being neglected, Ran due to her parent's separation and Shinichi due to his parents being abroad. They may not realise it but they both crave their parents' presence but don't ask for it which pushes them towards each other. Their Upbringing: I believe they have had similar upbringing ( because they are part of each other's upbringing) but the main difference is actually their wealth. He comes from a rich family which is supplied by his parent's career and his won success. He is so used to being complimented that before the Conan fiasco he doesn't have appreciation for what he has, rendering him cocky and Ran balances it out for she had to work hard for basics even though she isn't necessarily lacking she didn't grow up with the extensive wealth he has and from the first episode she keeps him grounded. Emotional support: I think a part of Ran that isn't acknowledged is her emotional strength and one part in particular: her tears which can be 2 sides of the same coin, the ability to cry and not to cry, Ran being the former and Shinichi the latter. Ran wears her heart on her sleeve and therefore readily reacts to tragedies around her no matter how many times she has seen it and Shinichi has the ability to comfort albeit teasing her about it. Shinichi is unable to cry, partially due to toxic masculinity and but also the fact that he has seen so much that he is desensitised to the point he doesn't cry or is able to control his tears and therefore isn't able to seek emotional support which is where Ran is emotionally supportive of him or shows his emotions on his behalf. ( If not her it's Heiji or Ai, but it would be her she turns to first out of instinct and he doesn't need to say it).

I really love this perspective of Ran's kiss to Shinichi.
oh this is not okay
this is so so messed up what the fuck aoyama (chap.652-vol.62)
what if i cared about them on an atomic level and could never go back from this what then
His last thought even before turning back is about Ran, the girl he wants to make unconditionally happy but keeps unintentionally hurting because of circumstances and bad luck. Also, does anyone think the shrinking motive is getting a bit old now, I wish Gosho could come up with something else
