— You’re not an in-between kinda guy. — What do you mean? — Well, people either love you, or hate you. — Really? — I mean… I hated you, when we first met. — I remember. — But now… — And now? — Well… now I don’t. — That means a lot to me, Chief, it really does. — Really! And that is from the heart, hm? I really do… not hate you anymore.

Obviously, this [“Hard Time”] is another ‘O’Brien Must Suffer’ episode. Ira Steven Behr sums up the rationale for these episodes; “Every year, we like to drive O’Brien totally mad. We did it with “Whispers”, we did it with “Tribunal” and “Visionary”, and we did it again the following season in “The Assignment”. We just like to hammer him because he’s such a great character. And he’s so accessible. You feel his pain, and even though it’s a TV show and you figure he’s gonna come out all right at the end, you’re still compelled to root him on.” (x)

“Avery Brooks gets a great performance out of Colm Meaney, one that makes you realise just how wasted his talents had been on The Next Generation — it really does stand up well with Patrick Stewart’s performance in “Chain Of Command, Part II”. A great episode, where the fact a character is clearly innocent of the trumped-up charge is the point of the story, not the great ‘revelation’ at the end.” — writers Mark Jones and Lance Parkin in Beyond the Final Frontier
STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE 2.14 “Whispers”
Contrary to public opinion, I am not the arrogant, self-absorbed, god-like doctor that I appear to be on occasion... Why don’t I hear anybody objecting to that statement? Well, I will, if you insist. I insist! Then I object!
