Two papers for understanding early 80s slashers:

In "There's More Than One Way to Lose Your Heart": The American Film Industry, Early Teen Slasher Films, and Female Youth, Richard Norwell delves into the ways that horror movies, particularly slashers, have been geared toward young women. There seems to have been an underlying assumption by marketers that horror would appeal to men by virtue of being horror, meaning that to maximize their audience they needed to put their effort into making it also appeal to women. In the case of slasher movies, this meant strong female protagonists, and focus on the female characters' platonic and romantic relationships.

“The Ambitions of Most Independent Filmmakers”: Indie Production, the Majors, and Friday the 13th (1980), also by Norwell, explains how independent slashers such as Friday the 13th were sold in negative pickup deals (meaning the studio would essentially buy the rights to movie upon completion). Filmmakers seeking negative pickups would work cheaply and attempt to follow existing trends in order to make their movies attractive to potential buyers. The success of Halloween in 1978 and the teen comedy Meatballs in 1979 influenced Friday the 13th as the filmmakers attempted to appeal to young audiences of the time.
