The voice caused the both of you to stop, and you glanced at your best friend. You knew why Potter had such a big crush on her, who wouldnât? With the prettiest eyes you had ever seen and flowing hair that looked like an angels, Lily Evans was beautiful. But you? You thought you looked like dust compared to her, who could even compare to her beauty? Certainly not her third wing, her best friend, her closest confidant. You both turned around and she rolled her eyes, but you took note to how she held her books to her chest a little bit tighter, and how her pale cheeks darkened in color momentarily.
âHalloween dance is coming up. You wanna go with me?â He asked with a cocky smirk, leaning agaisnt a nearby tree and biting down on his lip. You couldnât help but roll your eyes. âWhat, (l/n)? Got a problem?â James snarked back to you.
âAs a matter of fact I do.â You sassed, putting a hand on your hip bitterly.
âDay it to my face, whatâs your problem?âJames stepped towards you, glaring at you.
âOkay, thatâs enough of this. James Iâll go with you if you just stop talking to (f/n) like that, now leave us alone, we have divination!â Lily tugged you away, sighing softly and giving you a little smile.
âSo youâre actually gonna go with that dim witted bully? Jesus Lily, why did you swoop down that low?â You spat, angry and hurt that sheâd go with such a jerk like James Potter. Who strutted around with his head held high and his nose stuck in the air like some French Aristocrat. You hated him. Rolling your eyes, you took your seat in the hot room and huffed out.
But all your worries became swept away when you saw him step in, with his hair untidy and his skin pale as snow, he sat at a table in the corner on one of the cushions, looking around curiously. Your eyes landed on his and you grinned, giving him a wave. Severus Snape shot you the hint of a smile before looking back down and letting his hair cover his face. âWhy are you looking at him?â Lily groaned, tugging your shoulder. Secretly, if Lily could go out with the man who constantly made your life a living hell, then you could go with the guy who accidentally called her a bad name in the middle of a fit of emotions, once. And, on top of that, heâs been trying to apologize for ages and ages. You felt bad for Severus Snape, really bad. He never had the life you or Lily had. But either way, Lily always got what she wanted. Good grades, the gorgeous smile, hot guys fawning over her- and you always had to work hard to get what you desired. It wasnât fair at all.
So the two of you sat through Divination boredly, you scribbling some words across your empty notebook pages as Lily furiously took notes, constantly asking the professor to repeat herself so she could get word for word the ideas and philosophy behind the stupid class. When class ended you got up, pushing your way out of the crowded line and towards the door frame. âSorry.â You replied as you smacked your face into someoneâs chest.
âNo worries.â He murmured, and that familiar voice sent chills down your back.
âOh, Severus. Hi.â You smiled up at him, sticking by his side.
âOh, (F/n). Hi.â He mocked your tone and you smiled, seeing his lips turning up into the hint of a grin.
âDo you wanna, maybe like, hang out with me in the courtyard?â You gained the courage up to ask him, smiling softly and letting out a little sigh of content when he nodded. âGreat. Letâs go.â You gently grabbed his wrist, pulling him down with you and looking around the chilly autumn fields, the leaves of trees gently falling and the grass becoming dewy with morning air. You loved this feeling so much more than anybody could ever possibly know.
âDivination, do you like it or not?â Severus asked you as you sat down beside him on a bench.
âOh, god no. Itâs disgusting. A pitiful form of art and a horrid waste of my time. What about you?â
âSame, I hate it. Potions is more my style.â
âIâve noticed. Youâre very gifted, Sev.â You whispered, smiling at him when he went to look at you.
âYou really think so?â He asked, nudging his shoulder against yours.
âI know so.â You smiled, nudging his back in turn.
âHey, I was wondering-â
âSnape!â A bellowing voice called, and you both snapped your heads in the direction of the voice. James Potter and his little crew of bullies were marching towards you, wands ready in their hands.
âOh god, not again.â Severus groaned, looking down with a soft huff. You stood up with him, standing your ground.
âMy, my. What a surprise! Lily Evans best friend, hanging out with the man who belittled her.â James tsked, shaking his head slowly. âWhat a pathetic best friend.â
âOh, as if you donât do that ever day, Potter.â You shot back, fire dripping from your words.
âLeave her alone, James.â Severus begged, giving him an angry look. His dark eyes narrowed and his lips tightened as the other boy inspected him, looking him up and down.
âYouâre disgusting, really. A boorish, dim witted son of a bitch with greasy hair and a knack for the dark arts. Bet youâll end up becoming a Death Eater one of these days, huh? Canât find anyone here that likes you, so you move on to the next group. And after that the next, and the next-â
âEnough!â You shouted, drawing your wand and pointing it at the group of cackling boys. âHow dare you torment him like this? He minds his own business and you all come along to ruin it. Leave him be, or else!â
âOr else what, (l/n)? What are you gonna do? Hex us?â James raised an eyebrow, taking a step towards you.
âMaybe I will.â You snarled, watching as James presses the tip of his wand to your chin.
âExpelliarmus!â Severus cried out, James wand being knocked out of his hands. Snape rushed towards you, sighing. âAre you okay?â He asked softly.
âYeah, Iâm fine. Are you alright?â You whispered, looking at him closely.
âDonât worry about me, Iâm used to it-â
âHow cute.â Sirius stepped up and gave you both a false look of adoration. âYoung love, what a feeble thing.â
Before you could even snap back at him, you heard Potter cry out a spell. âExpulsio!â It flew right past Severus, blasting you agaisnt a tree as you let out a soft huff. âIt was for Severus! I didnât mean to-I didnât mean to-â
âLetâs get out of here! Before McGonogal sees!â Remus begged, and through narrowed eyes and soft breaths you heard them running away, Pettigrew slithering behind.
âOh my god,â Severus ran towards you, kneeling beside you and pressing his arm behind your back. âAre you play? Can you hear me?â He asked softly, and you looked up slowly as he propped you up on your back.
âI can.â You whispered, giving him a little smile. âNot like it was an unforgivable curse, it just startled me thatâs all.â With a feeble smile, you pressed a gentle kiss to his cheek.
âThis is my fault, I shouldnât have-â You heard the terror punctuating at his every word, and you knew why. Severus Snape thought he had a knack for ruining things and hurting people that got too close to him. But he didnât, and you didnât believe it either.
âHush, hush. No it isnât. Itâs just James Potter being, well, James Potter. Thatâs all. You helped me out more than once today, I promise.â You smiled up at him and he gave you a grin, nodding along with what you were saying.
âCome on, letâs get you to Madame Pomfrey.â He helped you stand up, walking as slow as you needed before helping you into a hospital bed.
âWhere is she?â Lily rushed in, seeing you laying down with Severus crouching above you. âNo doubt youâd do her harm.â She whispered with a frown.
âSev didnât do anything, Lily. Okay? And I donât appreciate you doing every little thing you possibly can to make him look like heâs a horrible person, because he isnât. Heâs kind and loving, and Iâve grown to adore that about him.â You gave him a little smile, turning your head and seeing Lily standing with a blank expression stretched over her face. âAnd if you have a problem with it, I dunno what to tell you. Iâm sorry Lily.â
âAre you telling me youâve grown to care for him? For the boy who-â
âYes. I have grown to care for the boy who made one mistake. The boy youâve refused to forgive because he messed up once. Unlike Potter out there who-â
âYeah well Iâve falling in love with Potter!â Lily defended. âHe isnât that bad when you get to know him.â
âAnd Iâve fallen in love with Snape. He isnât that mean when you get to know him.â You countered, watching as she frowned, her eyes meeting yours bitterly before she walked off. âSheâs so unforgiving sometimes.â You whispered, looking at the boy who sat beside you.
âIs what you said true?â Severus asked softly, smiling just a bit. You nodded, leaning closer to him and resting your forehead against his.
âIt is. Iâve loved you since fourth year.â You mumbled, giving him a big grin.
âWhy didnât you tell me sooner?â He asked, his thumbs brushing across your cheeks.
âI have a tendency to ruin things. And I didnât want to ruin us.â You frowned, looking down with a soft sigh.
âI donât want to ruin us, either. Now that I finally have youâŠâ He trailed off, his hands gently resting on your sides.
âI promise Iâll stick by you, okay? No matter what. And donât listen to Potter, heâs just angry he isnât as smart or handsome as you. And donât listen to what he said, about you becoming a Death Eater, he just doesnât know any good insults.â You smiled, your noses brushing together.
âAnd donât listen to him, either, I know what heâs told you before. About, you knowâŠthe way you look. I think youâre beautiful.â Severus grinned, and his smile grew when he saw your dark pink blush.
âYeah? Well I think youâre beautiful too.â
âMe? Beautiful? Iâm the shadows of the night, I am darkness. I canât be beautiful!â Severus joked, smiling widely at how your face lit up when you burst into laughter, your head tilting back happily. Thatâs what he desired to do every day. To just make you laugh like that.
Comfortable silence folded around the two of you, and he looked at you happily. âCan you kiss me, Severus Snape?â You finally asked, biting your lip and turning to him.
His mouth tugged upwards with a smile as he leaned forward, his lips pressing to yours. Fireworks exploded around you, happiness coursing itâs way through your body as he held you close to his chest tightly. Even after the two of you pulled away from the kiss he still held you tightly, your face burying against his shoulder. And you knew you would be content for the rest of your life, with you in his arms.
