Dear black men (and other men of color):
I want you to think about the following situation, one that you might even be able to partially or fully identify with.
You are part of a biracial family, your father is also black, your mother is white. There are many other families like yours, your experience is a common one.
And you love your family, because they are your family, but you know that your mother is racist. It's not like she openly admits that she's racist, but you know it, how could you not know it?
She's racist because when she's angry she doesn't tell you that you're stupid, she says that black men are stupid, it's not that you're useless, it's that black men are useless.
She's racist because she always says in the most discreet ways that white people are better.
She's racist because she enjoys watching/reading content where black people are harassed, discriminated against, mistreated, abused or murdered, content where this is so normalized that it doesn't even play a role in the plot anymore, it's just what happens every day; and she always complains about forced inclusion whenever a character of color appears.
She's your mother, a person who should protect you and fight to make this world a safe place for you, but instead, whenever people talk about murders of black people, she says that person asked for it by going down the wrong path, because all black people go down the wrong path.
She's your mother, the one who calls uncivilized, violent, exaggerated and crazy to people marching for Black Lives Matter.
And they tell you that you can't hate your mother for that, that you can't call her racist, how can she be, if she married your father? If she has other black people in her life that she loves too?
It must hurt so much that your own mother is racist, and to live in this world where it's so normalized that you can't even complain about it without you being the problem.
Now imagine you're a woman. Your father is a misogynist, not overtly, but you know it, when he gets angry… when he discreetly says… because he enjoys watching content… because when a woman is murdered… and when women march…
We can consider the white man as the epithet of the problem, because he is not part of the two largest marginalized groups, because empathy is taught and learned from pain, and all people have to endure pain in their lives, but they (white men) will never have to add to their own pain the pain of their community, of their people.
But I don't understand how marginalized groups continue to fight each other, how each person tries to use any characteristic that brings them closer to the white cis-hetero man to trample on and feel superior to other marginalized groups.
We know pain, even though we have experienced it in such different (yet similar) ways. It will not ease your pain if you pull the knife out of your body and stab an innocent person.
