Situated opposite of her partner-in-crime Scylla, Charybdis is a monster said to live under a rock in the Strait of Messina. Three times a day she swallows huge gulps of water, spitting them out as whirlpools that made the strait innavigable. She was the horrible child of Gaia and either Pontus or Poseidon. In one version of her story she aided her father in flooding the lands and, as punishment by Zeus, was cast to the bottom of the sea. In another she was a voracious woman who stole the cattle of Heracles, with the same fate from Zeus. Odysseus, later in his story, is forced to navigate back through the strait after losing men to Scylla, his raft swallowed by Charybdis and almost taking his life. The phrase "between Scylla and Charybdis" was born out of their tale, meaning to be between two hard problems.
