Thinking about when Zhao Yuanzhou says "Xiao Zhuo, you're still so..." in EP34, whether he had realised that Zhuo Yichen was trying to split a sliver of his consciousness to preserve it, and what he was trying to say was "you're still so soft-hearted", just as Ying Long said about Bing Yi.

You ever just think about the fact that the Zhuo Yichen who walks into the cave is one who has just gotten Zhao Yuanzhou to agree that he won't look for death. And when he gives himself up to Ying Long it's so that his friends won't have to, but there's a part of him that's probably thinking that this can be the solution. He can't kill Zhao Yuanzhou if he's not around to do it. But then Zhao Yuanzhou has to try to save him and he sees the future and after that he *knows* that he will kill Zhao Yuanzhou. And there's nothing that he can do about it. And he's stuck trying desperately to save the world while he grieves a future he'll never get and a man who isn't even dead yet.
And how he talks about trying to find a different ending for them, but in the back of his mind he knows that he was the one who wrote that ending, when he was younger and angrier and didn't know what the consequences would be. He swore to kill Zhao Yuanzhou. He picked up the pen and wrote their ending and when he wanted to change it no one would let him because without him even realizing it had been set in stone and woven into their fate long before they ever met.
And do you ever want to cry for the Zhuo Yichen who walks out of the cave carrying all of that weight.
Photo so iconic, it inspired me to write a smut chapter for my ff about it. Lmao but I really find it so funny that HMH was standing around like this with not a single worry, I mean why wouldnโt he try to close up his robes? Iโm not complaining but itโs cute in a way (interesting that Yuanzhou would be wearing that, and crazier partโฆ heโs wearing THAT to speak to Yichen in the middle of the night)

One of my fav uses of queer subtext in fof that I've meant to comment on for ages is how much Zhuo Yichen's demonization arc reads like commentary on homophobia. Specifically the brand of homophobia that conservatives love to spout when a beloved celebrity is outed against their will. How quickly the public turns against him the moment Zhuo Yichen is revealed to be One Of Them, uncaring that he was revered as the dreamboat of all the maidens of marriable age or the hero of all the boys in Tiandu until the day before. The egg-throwing. The claim that "hanging around demons all the time will turn you into a demon, too" echoing real world sentiments about how queer media will "corrupt" young minds and *gasp* turn them gay. The suspicion about the companions he keeps, cause surely no sensible, good christian guy would hang around a gay person, if not because they're secretly gay, too. The "we don't pay tax money for you to use it to shield people like him" that pushes for him to go jobless cause children can't look up to someone like him. Can you see it

love that zhuo yichen is literally canonically bing yi and ying long's child like he is by blood bingyi's descendant and ying long gives him the last remaining physical part of him to form his demonic core... like that's as close to direct parentage as one can get without actually being physically birthed by the pair
and if we see his demon transformation arc as rebirth then it involved the mixing of bingyi's blood (frequent metaphor for sex in literature btw) and ying long's bone (do we even need to explain) and if both of those things did not have enough sexual subtext, immediately after the whole ordeal we have The Most Uncalled For Mpreg Jokeโข
