thank you both! it’s funny, i always considered metalloy to be the hardest genes for me to get right (still kind of do, honestly.) one of my commissioners asked for a metalloy look on their dragon, so i saved different steps to show what i do

1. sketch out the dragon

2. lineart, doing some changes to make things look better

3. add the flat colors (i like using a color that’s easy to see if it gets out of the lines [because sai’s selection tool sucks])

4. shade it. i’ve been into harder cel shading recently, which helps with these genes

5. actual colors

6. this is where it can get tricky. using a bright color i draw in where i think the highlights should go. i’m still practicing lighting so it can be a little confusing, but keeping things fairly consistent helps. bigger blocks of color where the light source is coming from, then smaller lines for backlighting which really helps it pop

7. more highlighting, then using the airbrush to blend it. i blend only one side of the color block, since blending both sides just makes it too soft

8. putting the highlights on the ‘luminosity’ mode and color correcting. luminosity makes the highlight pop more no matter what color. i like to make sure the highlight color makes sense with what base color it’s on though, and in this case it’s different types of dark unsaturated green

9. finishing touches, the end stage of the art. fixing up whatever necessary, adding things to spice it up here and there- feather highlights, shines, etc. this dragon has a metallic savannah look :>

10. finished piece! i like to put a light color over the parts that are further away with a clipping layer set to ‘screen’ mode, for some depth. then i just fiddle with things until it looks right, and i’m done!
