It's sad to look back and realize that I lost very special friends, perhaps because I didn't know how to tone things down.
My best friend… ex-best friend… got involved with the guy another friend liked, and I chose to take the side of the one who seemed most hurt because that's what my values dictated. But after a while, the two of them started talking again, and I was the one who ended up being seen as the girl who got involved without any obligation to do so. I saw my friend incredibly sad and distraught, telling me how awful and cruel the other girl was being. And I saw how my ex-best friend was lying to me, omitting information, talking about things as if they were trivial instead of realizing she was hurting the person she claimed to care about. That side of her also made me afraid she would hurt me, and I wasn't in the best mental state to allow it. I put my foot down and said, "You're not doing the right thing. You're hurting someone, and besides, it scares me how easily you're disregarding our friend."
Now that I wanted to talk and fix things, she's the victim and I'm the one who got involved unnecessarily. I'm the bad guy, impulsive and confrontational… If only she knew that the friend she hurt, and now pretends they can start over, has been saying terrible things about her, not just to me. I think of the two of us, I was the one who exposed her the least to others.
With my best friend, it's been different. About a year and a half ago, I started struggling with body dysmorphia and a potential eating disorder, which has been very difficult to balance with my new lifestyle. I had problems with mirrors, my boyfriend, and any aspect of my life that could be related to my physical appearance. I'm thin, and I could be even thinner. I have a naturally petite body, without large hips or breasts, and I tend to wear oversized or men's clothing for that very reason, to hide myself and avoid being self-conscious about my appearance. My best friend was talking with another friend one day and started jokingly saying that men considered our friend more of a woman than me because of our different features, since she's a pretty girl with big breasts and hips and beautiful long hair… I cried at that moment because of how bluntly he said it, the mockery, and the joke he was trying to make me feel. That same afternoon, I told him he'd been wrong and that I didn't want to talk to them for a while. Later, he came back to me and apologized, but honestly, it's not the same anymore. I feel disgusted and angry. When I hear him talk about his problems, I think he's the stupidest person I've ever seen and that he deserves everything that happens to him. But again, I'm being left alone. I don't know how to end things with us for good because our friend is his best friend, and I'm afraid that cutting her off would mean cutting us both off. Lately, he's been having bad days, and I feel that naturally, his way of treating others isn't right. But in these situations, friends usually understand and allow them to have a slightly sour temper without them crossing the line (again), but I can't take it anymore. I feel responsible for forgiving him because I gave him the impression that we're friends again. I feel responsible for holding a grudge.
I'm a woman with few friends and many acquaintances. I have no problem interacting with people because I'm good at it, even though I don't generally like people. But I don't know, I don't like change. Losing friends is a form of change, especially if you're used to having them around every day. I don't feel good having them in my life right now. It bothers me to know how bad they can be, but I'm afraid to let go. Somehow, they still tie me to my university days, which I'm not yet able to let go of.
I don't know what to do…
Estoy teniendo días agotadores
Ashik Kerib (Georgian: აშიკ-ქერიბი) (“strange ashik”) is a 1988 Soviet art film directed by Dodo Abashidze from Georgia and Sergei Parajanov from Armenia that is based on the short story of the same name by Mikhail Lermontov. It was Parajanov’s last completed film and was dedicated to his close friend Andrei Tarkovsky, who had died two years previously. The film also features a detailed portrayal of Azerbaijani culture.
An ashik wants to marry his beloved, but her father opposes since he is poor and he expects rich prospects for his ‘daughter from heaven’. She vows to wait for him for a thousand days and nights until he comes back with enough money to impress her father. He sets out on a journey to gain wealth and encounters many difficulties, but with the help of a saintly horseman, he returns to his beloved on the 1001st day and they are able to marry.
The entire story is told in a way of Azerbaijan folklore with music and colour playing a key role. Dialogue is minimal and scripts are used to narrate the plot changes. The director included intentional anachronisms such as the use of submachine guns and a movie camera.
Parajanov’s previous three major films Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, The Color of Pomegranates, The Legend of Suram Fortress were colourful illustrations of Ukrainian, Armenian and Georgian culture respectively. Ashik Kerib similarly explores traditional Azerbaijani clothes, music, dance, art and customs.
Sounds good
There are so many things going through my head that I don't even want to try to put them into words. Is it normal to go through this strange period of unease without actually being mentally ill? Or maybe I'm being presumptuous by thinking I'm not mentally ill. It's just inexplicable, perhaps because I'm resisting the idea that there might be a problem with myself. My studies are stalled, due to scheduling issues and because I no longer feel like simply getting my law degree. My job is strange; every day I'm afraid I'm not doing enough and that any day now I'll have to leave. I can no longer stand living under the same roof as my parents. I've reached a level of resentment where I don't want to share anything with them, do anything with them, nothing. If my salary allowed it, I would have already distanced myself. My relationship with him is so strange; it's okay now, but I remember so many past mistakes that fill me with disgust and a desire to be cruel to him. The distance is killing me. Every day I get more used to not having him with me, and I'm even starting to give up on our plans together, just because so much time has passed that it seems impossible now. Especially since it's tied to getting my degree again; I'm so discouraged about that. I feel like I don't have any friends anymore. Maybe they have friends in common with me, but they've disappointed me so much that I don't want them around anymore. They create such an uncomfortable feeling of rejection, as if I were forcing them to be around me. Others simply don't try to stay in touch. If I didn't try, we probably wouldn't even talk, but I also feel like they'd blame me if I tried to set boundaries. They already have, and I'm the one who ends up feeling guilty or responsible, and that's so unpleasant and unfair. But my personality makes others think I'm the tough one. All of this is unbearable. It's holding me back and occupies my mind all day, as if I'm unhappy with countless things in my life but don't know how to fix them. I wish I were bolder and could go out and do whatever I want without fear of having to come back defeated if things don't work out. I wouldn't mind having to start over as many times as necessary... it's just that I don't want to admit I was wrong about my mom; she'd make sure to rub it in my face every single day, because that's what she's so good at. Ultimately, my only conclusion from all this is that I've got a knot in my head that I don't know how to untangle. It's all very strange.
