My great aunt Maurene was my real life spirit guide. At crossroads I would consult her and she sagely listened. As a child she was the most glamorous person I had ever seen, her smile and earrings always larger than life and her energy was unparalleled by any magnetic or charismatic person I’ve ever encountered. During rough times in adolescence she offered refuge at her home on the river. She made me smile during serious times extending her kindness always, she never met a stranger. Her vivaciousness bridged generational gaps, you never felt you were talking to your grandma, but a wise and funny peer. She was to me an adopted grandmother. I know she had a spiritual side. She believed in spirits and angels, she had crystals and light bending prisms in her windows. The television tuned to the softest music channels in her living room while we ate sandwiches and drank cokes. I feel suspended in shock at her exit this week, to a degree I’m still in denial. She was so bright, and vivacious, funny and alive. But she also fearlessly approached her own mortality in conversation. She died peacefully, the 12th, surrounded by family, at home. I will keep her in my heart forever. We will always miss you, Maurene 💎 (at Seguin, Texas)
