Work gives structure to her existence, direction. Without it, there is very little waiting for her at the end of the day. No home to return to, no fixed place carved out for herself across the realities she drifts through... Because of this, Victoria keeps most people at arm’s length emotionally. Long-term attachment feels impractical at best & actively dangerous at worst given the nature of her lifestyle. Stable relationships rarely survive the constant travel, disappearances, unstable work conditions, & emotional distance she maintains almost instinctively. That does not mean she is entirely detached from physical intimacy, however. Victoria occasionally indulges in fleeting encounters, one-night stands, or looser arrangements that exist somewhere within the vague territory of companionship, familiarity, & convenience. Not quite romantic, not entirely platonic either; the sort of dynamic formed between colleagues, recurring acquaintances, business partners, or fellow drifters who cross paths often enough to become temporarily significant to one another. These connections rarely last long, though seldom due to outright conflict. More often they dissolve naturally beneath the weight of incompatible schedules, distance, emotional avoidance, or the simple reality that Victoria never truly stays anywhere long enough for roots to form properly,

[ Untouched… uncompromising, ] A kind of certainty usually possessed either by the profoundly capable or the catastrophically reckless. Victoria has lived long enough to know those categories overlap more often than people prefer admitting; she likes neither option, “Hm,” she murmurs thoughtfully, gaze drifting over him again; reassessing the challenge he’d placed before her. [ —cue the click of her tongue, ] “See, now you’re making the mistake of assuming heroes actually enjoy looking like that...” strands of pale hair shift softly with the motion of a head tilt while her attention remains fixed steadily on him: “The exhausted speeches; the dramatic self-sacrifice; the perpetual martyr complex… Most of that isn’t heroism; it’s branding.” Experience has carved that conclusion into her far too thoroughly over the years for her to romanticize the concept anymore. “Me?” Victoria echoes softly, [ the word touched faintly by disbelief before: ] a quieter sort of humor slips beneath it, “Ah. Hardly.” Gaze drifts outward briefly toward the fractured skyline surrounding them, “I think people like you misunderstand something about survival,” she says after a moment, voice lowering slightly, “Living long enough to watch worlds fall apart around you doesn’t automatically make you wise. ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤThe smell of smoke curls lazily through the kitchen; the look crossing Victoria’s face suggests she noticed several minutes ago & simply decided the situation was still recoverable through sheer stubbornness alone [ blasted human food… ] Sleeves remain pushed carelessly past her elbows while she stands over the stove with instance concentration; not unlike someone attempting to pilot damaged machinery through atmospheric reentry [ you know… rather than cook breakfast in a borrowed apartment, ] At Circe’s voice drifting through the room, Victoria glances over one shoulder, pale gold sunlight catches against her features; sleep still clinging faintly to her composure alongside [ perhaps ] lingering intimacy neither of them has quite acknowledged aloud yet… [ & that’s how it’ll stay, ] “That’s a bit cruel; I’m trying my best here,” she murmurs, perhaps sounding entirely too calm for someone currently losing a battle against bacon grease. “Here I was under the impression I was doing something considerate,”

The pan hisses sharply in protest behind her; Victoria ignores it with confidence. Victoria has escaped death, cosmic disasters, bounty hunters, temporal collapse, & several situations significantly worse than this kitchen. She refuses to let bacon become her most embarrassing downfall. She reaches to lower the heat, movements slower now, less guarded than they had been the evening prior. Comfortable, almost; ah, dangerous territory, “Besides,” she continues, glancing briefly toward Circe again, “I’m cooking for both of us, which means I’m forced to consider your preferences in this tragedy as well.” Disdainful gaze drifts meaningfully toward the darkening strips still crackling in the pan before returning to her, “Unless burnt bacon is genuinely something you enjoy, in which case I may need to reevaluate several assumptions I’ve already made about you…” Let me just make a note on that,

The stillness that overtakes her afterward feels heavier, yet fragile in a way that tension alone could never fully imitate. Moonlight spills softly across the clearing between them while Victoria’s gaze lowers for the briefest moment, lashes shadowing the exhaustion lingering beneath her composure. The question itself feels almost absurd directed toward her of all people; heroes save others, they endure & continue moving long after the world has demanded too much from them because stopping is never option. Being saved implies there is still something left to return to afterward,

The exhale that follows almost resembles something like laughter, though the sound arrives faded & fragile, thinned by solitude & the slow erosion of time... Digits curl loosely against the fabric gathered near her wrist, [ thoughtful more than defensive now, ] while her attention slowly lifts back toward Mortem, [ blank, blank, oh so blank… ] “I think…” it’s as if though she’s forced to examine each word before allowing it into the open air between them, “people grow accustomed to surviving for so long that eventually they stop considering the possibility that they were allowed to want anything else.” The honesty unsettles her almost immediately; vulnerability has never rested comfortably against her, especially not when offered so plainly. “For a very long time,” [ —a thick gulp, ] “being needed is far more important than being cared for,” Sapphire orbs narrow faintly; she is now trying to make sense as to why the question affected her as deeply as it did in the first place. “…You make it sound very simple,” she murmurs at last. “As though someone like me could simply be saved at all. It’s… a nice thought,” & Victoria leaves it at that, [ Mind you: she didn’t say no, ]

ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤA faint glimmer of amusement touches Victoria’s expression at the question [ subtle enough to nearly disappear beneath the composed stillness she wears so naturally… ] Slender digits drift absently along the rim of the glass in her hand while her attention remains settled on Circe; gaze thoughtful, “...Usually,” she admits after a moment, [ voice is smooth & unhurried, ] “It saves time,” No challenge lingers within her response, no attempt to unsettle or provoke; she simply speaks with the ease acquired from the exhaustion of disguising truth a very long time ago… Victoria tilts her head just ever so, studying Circe beneath the low glow of surrounding lights, attention lingering briefly over the confidence threaded through her posture, the practiced elegance, the carefully sharpened charisma resting beneath every movement she makes, [ Beautiful, dangerous; perhaps even lonely, ]

The sight of it stirs a recognition Victoria chooses very carefully not to examine for longer than necessary, “Besides,” the faintest trace of humor returning at the edges of her voice, “you don’t strike me as someone particularly interested in small talk polite enough to qualify as dishonest. Most people spend entire conversations trying to become less visible to each other. I’ve never understood the appeal in that,”

Not a word left her lips. Not. A. Word. She wore a scowl set so deep into her brow, she looked like a cat who was about to swat at her with her claws.

But never mind that.

As much as the woman might have said as much just to make light of an awkward situation, she wasn't in the mood for exchanging pleasantries, or sharing what product she used on her hair. She had her pressed up against the wall of the elevator, claiming what little space she had as a huge group of commuters filed in the through the door, packing themselves in like sardines. All of them, strangers and office workers...

Except for one.

There was a man who stood a head above the rest, horn-rimmed glasses and a tie made with Italian silk. That was her man. His head was slated for the chopping block, his soul hers for the taking--if she could just keep an eye on him, she might be able to suffer through the ride down to the lobby. Without any unnecessary small talk.

Hopefully the woman she had boxed in couldn't feel her gun hidden underneath her coat, strapped around her flank.

"... Lavender." She groused, holding herself steady as the elevator began its descent. If it would sate her curiosity, then it was a sacrifice she was willing to make. Even if it felt like pulling teeth.

"It's lavender. What you're smelling. Nothing that special."

It was a soft, questioning sound that left her. Black eyes watched even as her cheek pressed against the back of her knuckles.

That was a funny little comment from this one. Funny enough to draw a sincere little laugh from Mortem. Her lips curved into a sharp smile. It took only one sentence for the witch to know what this woman thought of her. Was it a right or wrong assumption? Yes. The answer didn't matter, how one perceived Mortem was rarely wrong, even if it may not also be entirely right.

"I'm counting on it." It was an honest reply, the delight in her voice as clear as those crystalline blue eyes this stranger sported. Pretty thing like this no doubt turned heads, combine that with the usual hero complex to protect others which likely came with a heavy dose of loneliness and sadness... may as well be chum in the water, people sensed it whether they realized it or not.

Mortem certainly did. But then, she knew what to look for.

Her smile split further into a grin as she stared unblinking at the nameless woman. There was no light to be found in her dark gaze, as if it had been swallowed by this witch's particular nature.

"But it won't be you."

when a friend engages in a conversation without much prompt, diana can't help but smile. IT'S A SMALL QUIRK TO THE CORNER OF HER LIPS . especially when she is standing without her adornment of a modern human, diana prince, curator and not quite the super hero ambassador. A WOMAN WITH A JOB . but right now she is standing in full armor, a sword and shield on her back. TIARA SHINING IN THE SUMMER SUNLIGHT . her arms are crossed so casually over her chest, a non-question.
