I have to assume with the goatherd head plan that the writers want us to believe that daemon thinks Rhaenyra is stupid. He will follow her and honor her as sovereign but he thinks she’s kinda dumb. Similar to his relationship with viserys I guess? Is this like supposed to be reflective of him still seeing her as a child he can lie to bc she won’t know any better? It’s such a weird choice
imo it is none of that and can say nothing really deep about character because it is too obviously an artifact of contorting the plot to make the rhaena-nettles merger “work” and it really, really. not working. in the book nettles causes a final breakdown because rhaenyra believes daemon is having an affair with a dragonseed after the other dragonseeds have betrayed her and that more treason is afoot as she descends into full blown paranoia. she orders the death of this lowborn, largely unknown-to-her girl, daemon can’t follow through with it, sends nettles away to safety on sheepstealer so he and caraxes must face aemond and vhagar alone, and dies for rhaenyra’s cause. absolutely none of this works if sheepstealer’s rider is rhaenyra’s stepdaughter instead and yet by god, are they going to force this nonsense through with this abjectly stupid plot of rhaena being accidentally responsible for jace’s death and rhaenyra vengefully calling for her head and wacky subsequent hijinks. the showrunners will give a lot of answers that don’t pass muster as to why they did this merger, as condal did in an interview released today: didn’t want to do an infidelity plot (not actually necessary, as the real kicker in the order for nettles’ death is class, not whether daemon is actually sleeping with her or not, which is left ambiguous in the book anyway), a “lady” going “wild” is more interesting than the book’s plot (no, it is not). all this is hot air. the answer is they have an overstuffed cast they already struggle to balance and they decided to merge rhaena and nettles even while adding new white men characters because they barely want to write the black female characters they have, so couldn’t resist merging two of them and avoid having to pretend to care about three whole entire black women. if other people want to try to make character sense of it that’s their perogative, but sometimes with tv you have to give up and acknowledge the dumb racist strings behind the curtain.
