The new World Trade Center Oculus by Santiago Calatrava is a hub for transportation, retail and, of course anybody with eyeballs ready to take in the spectacle of this element of the memorial to 9/11 | The form of the structure can be described as a rib cage, or perhaps the outstretched wings of a dove emerging from a pair of hands. But as the name suggests it is also an eye always fixed on the new towers to remind visitors of the tragedy of 2001 while also inspiring hope. What you may not know is that one day a year- on the anniversary of the tragedy - the sun happens to align itself perfectly over the array of windows that make up the “iris”. The windows retract, opening the “eye” to allow the sun to illuminate the atrium in a sharp strip of light. #telaviv the White City | In 1909, the first mayor of #TLV, Meir Dizengoff, was tasked to draw up plans for a new “garden city” to be built atop the barren sand dunes next to the ancient city of Jaffa. The plans finally began progress in!1925 but didn’t take a visual form until 1933. The rising Nazi party shut down the Bauhaus school in Berlin and Jewish architects were forced to flee to British mandated Palestine. The Bauhaus style, with its emphasis on minimalism was ideal for the infant Jewish state and the timing was perfect. Bauhaus was adopted as the style of this new oasis in the desert. Today, with over 4,000 structures, Tel Aviv is home to the largest collection of Bauhaus architecture in the world. #israel #design #architecture #latergram #history (at Tel Aviv, Israel)

So, only a few hours into my first visit to Tel Aviv for this trip, I fell in love. That's how it goes here. As soon as I picked her up she went right for my chest and would not stop snuggling me!
