the misinterpretation of you belong with me reminds me a lot of — not to start this discourse again — the misinterpretation of drivers license, with the line about sabrina carpenter. olivia never meant ill will towards sabrina, nor was her mention of sabrina’s blonde hair and older age meant to be taken as shade. it was olivia naming qualities of sabrina’s that she herself doesnt hold to express the insecurity she feels when being compared to someone else who’s of interest to the person she loves. the same can be said for you belong with me, with taylor simply listing off the qualities and behaviors of the other girl — that she’s cheer captain, that she wears high heels and short skirts — that she knows make her appealing & expressing frustration that she doesn’t share those same qualities, but also suggesting that that doesn’t mean she can’t be loved by the boy in question too. how either song about first loves & teenage insecurity was ever turned into some sort of condemned “pick me girl” anthem is beyond me. society just has to demonize everything teenage girls say and do
