Final Work:Â BLEACHEDÂ
Following on from the first assignment I wanted to continue a focus on the chemical aspect of things. Specifically hoe chemicals interact with humans and how human life can and often is altered from its natural state (consider: antibiotics â medically, makeup â cosmetically). This alteration is paralleled when considering the environments also. It seems there is a trend in human interference that often results in more damage than good.
My initial thoughts on human interference and chemicals led me to acknowledge some culturally sensitive topics. Specifically issues of internalised racism and colourism within ethnic and South Asian communities. Essentially internalised racism and colourism dictate beliefs that suggest white, Eurocentric, Caucasian identities are far more significant and valued than identities that do not fall into those categories. This mentality thrived and was driven through colonialization and despite the progress of several countries breaking away from this colonial past, it is still present today. In relation to South Asian it continues to thrive through beauty standards and ignorance that pervades the mentalities of a large majority of individuals both within South Asia, immigrants and the South Asian diaspora. Beauty standards that define lighter skin as more visually attractive drives billions in profit in cosmetic industries that fund the production of skin bleaching products.
Desire as a concept also becomes relevant in considering skin bleaching; the prominent celebration of lighter skin within South Asian media and communities perpetuates this desire I wanted to translate this specific desire within my assignment but also relate it back to ecologies, humans and the future of human and non-human relationship (non-human that is inclusive of both the environment and chemicals).
I initially began experimenting with bleach and fabrics, focusing on the materials and their potential. The presentation of the final result of this interaction, which was in fact reasonably successful due to the obvious visual transformation, was unfortunately a challenge to document in an aesthetically pleasing and visually considered manner. I decided then to use more organic subjects with bleach, mostly leaves and flowers. The result of this was less visually obvious but still enough to be able to identify the damaging properties of bleach. I replicated these experiments using chlorine hoping for a stronger result visual product but the results were quite similar. During these processes I felt such a literal representation of issues surrounding colourism was predictable and did not hold enough depth.
It was at this point I realised that an issue that resonates with me so deeply requires a higher level of personal investment. I followed by experimenting with personal photographs in chlorine and bleach to produce a whitewashed effect, until after I decided to simply resort to digital means to acquire the whitewashed aesthetic.
And so my final work is purely and simply a product of whitewashing done digitally. Despite the narrative I am aiming to translate being inherently concerned with humans I have intentionally omitted human subjects from the final piece to hopefully encourage a more focus on the white wash effect itself. The three images illustrate three generations of homes within my family, fallen subject to the destructive mentality of colourism, white supremacy and bleaching. It visualises a future in which these attitudes have dominated and moved beyond the human narrative to the physical world; inherently presenting the sterile, emotionless, aftermath of devaluing colour. It is a bleak future that I hope represents a bleak present in regards to human skin bleaching. I look at these images of my homes that I have such a strong sentimental connection with, being transformed into sterile and emotional landscapes.
The choice of photographs and still images contrasts with the emotionally turbulent product of unhealthy mentalities. To sum up, the final work is essentially and ecological landscape that is visually inept of human life and most significantly any colour, representing a future in which destructive attitudes and behaviour surrounding white supremacy and internalised racism have taken over all aspects of life. Both human and non-human. The visualisation of this future and aftermath is driven by my personal effort to draw focus on the current issues of colourism in contemporary society. The parallels between the current and the future are connected through my specific use of photographs that depict homes which hold sentimental value within me. Physical structures that will continue to thrive even after I die. Unless we begin to reform and unlearn behaviour that promotes colourism, these homes have every potential to fall subject to the destructivity of bleach and internalised racism.

In considering relationships between humans and non-humans for future possibilities, the potential is vast. Printing posters on paper may become obsolete in response to the earths finite resources, the future may commodify human bodies themselves as a form of commercialism and a material that can be used. My poster is the body itself, the images a form of documentation. Â With my final work I hoped to draw parallels between the two materials, the human body and paper. The body which becomes the medium to represent the chemical construct of traditional printing paper.Â
REVISED
Iâm planning to use the body as the medium, like I had considered before. And instead of swallowing paper, I might just paint on the CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS THAT MAKE UP PAPER onto the body. This could potentially be the future for humans, the environment, and paper; a very vague amalgamation of the 3. Going back to my sand poster, the earth is a limited resource, eventually we may simply be unable to mass produce paper, and so we have to use other materials to display posters. That material, that medium could be a human. As the environment deteriorates, Humans could potentially be computerised into products, used as objects. Reversing the roles that now exist between humans and the environment. We may no longer have the luxury to destroy the earthâs natural state to sustain our lifestyles.
The poster itself I want to be very minimalistic, I considered writing all 200 different chemicals that could be involved in making paper but that seemed like it would appear too crowded. So Iâm deciding to stick with only the core 3. This is an informative poster. This is paper. This is a human. This is the future of humans in and the environment.
THE FUTURE OF POSTERS
After revising the various branches I went off onto through exploring this topic, I think I finally found one that fits. What is a human? and what is a poster?
I really liked the idea of looking into the chemical construct of an object. The inside of its insides. SO WHAT IS A POSTER REALLY? Letâs assume that posters are generally made on paper. Iâm considering a paper poster. SO WHATÂ IS PAPER?
CLOSE UP OF THE STRUCTURE OF PAPER
Paper is apparently the combination of the 3 core ingredients to create the paper like material: CELLULOSE, KAOLIN CLAY AND CALCIUM CARBONATE.
Additionally, apparently there are over 200 different additives you can combine with these ingredients to then the desired colour and texture etc. These guys literally break it down to every possible paper combination.

I only managed to eat one bit of paper. But I did do some stuff with projections using my window and the morning sun that comes through it. I think my room was probably not the best place, because I have these weird bars on my window and the light was coming at an angle. I donât know if I like it just yet but it was definitely interesting.
EDUARDO KAC has inspired me, so Iâm going back to one of my other ideas. I will swallow an A2 size paper, ultimately combining the non-human and the human. The poster will be inside of me. I am the poster.
Regarding presentation, after our studio class last week, there was one work which used projection to refer to an A4 size paper. So after me swallowing the paper, I was thinking of then projecting the dimensions of an A2 paper on to me. Using sunlight? Using a projector?
ARTIST INSPIRATION: Eduardo Kac.
This GUY. His work the Eduina, is something that I stubled across last year, and to this day is still one of my favourite artworks JUST BECAUSE OF HOW amazing the process of it all is. Kacâs works are based heavily around post human theory, and exploring the potential for hybrid forms. Eduina was essentially the combination of Kacâs blood and a genetically modified Petunia. HYBRID FORMS. Itâs beautiful.

My sand poster ambitions didnât really go to plan. The tides were pretty much ruthless. I couldnât draw up more than a square, let alone make a sand sculpture before the waves came and destroyed Everything. Which is annoying because I really like the aesthetics of this all.
The Revised Poster
Temporal art works always appealed to me, incorporating he environment into my work is involves something that is inherently TEMPORAL.
SO possibly Iâm thinking if I could make a poster, exact in dimensions BUT using an environmental medium. The one that seemed most accessible and doable to me was sand. I could potentially create a sand sculpture of a poster, and photograph it or record it being washed away by the tide? Commentary on global warming? Perhaps. Commentary on the destruction of the environment to provide for human wants? Perhaps. It could represent a future where paper does not exist and we have to resort to other methods of informing or instructing.
In terms of what to write on the poster, I still really like understanding whatâs inside of the inside of a thing. SO I was considering simply just writing the chemical compound formula of sand, onto it to signify that its actually made up of SAND. Â But itâs a poster also.

It may just be my incredibly basic skill of drafting, but the body poster listing the foods I consumed during the day seemed bleh. It looked like I shopping list honestly. SO I Â HAVE DECIDED TO DROP IT. Bleh.
THE NON HUMAN INSIDE OF A HUMAN
Going of the foreign objects that are found within humans, I began to consider other non-human things that exists inside of us. I guess anything that we are not biologically born with internally can be considered as the non-human within us? I was thinking particularly in terms of food. FOOD is not human. FOOD is always inside us. I could make a poster about what I ate in an entire day. Listing the ingredients only. I think that would be interesting. Â Its reaching, but I guess by some form of extension it does consider non-human and human relationships and the environments, in terms of our internal environment?
Photography would be cool to incorporate also. Maybe have my body, and then on my body listed all the things I ate that day. What foods did I eat? My body is the poster, the medium for the poster. Â

What is a HUMAN?
Thankyou LEO.
While pondering the philosophy behind WHAT IS A HUMAN? I remembered science has already established what a human is biologically.
I realised how interesting X RAYS and ultrasounds are aesthetically. We can literally see whatâs inside of us. In terms of a poster I would like to incorporate X rays into the work.Â
SO WHILE going through several x rays of humans and ultrasounds etc, I came across a very specific type of x ray. X rays that show people who have âforeign objectsâ inside of them. SO WILD.
It got me to imagining, how maybe in the future there could be humans that simply grow these random objects as a limb. It becomes a part of them almost. A natural part. And MAYBE THIS IS WHAT MY POSTER COULD BE ABOUT. Â An informative poster depicting the dangers of swallowing foreign objects. Possibly also alongside another poster that shows the future of human kind, that has evolved with these objects to become a new form of human.
I played around with some images I found, and ended up with this. It could be like a warning poster?Â
Also it would be cool to maybe have my own x ray done. I could even swallow paper and get myself x rayed, and have my poster be me inside of me. That would be ideal.Â
Possibly the accompanying poster showing the future of humans. Who says we wont evolve into humans that have safety pins attached to our fingers.
POST HUMAN THEORY
Post Human theory in relation to art is 100% worth looking at. Incredibly interesting. Nick Bostrom in his âDefiance of Post Human Dignityâ explains that the result of the âoutgrowth of secular humanism and the Enlightenmentâ can be referred to as post human or trans human. The post human and trans human are essentially very core to the future of Contemporary Art. It considers moving away from traditional notions of the HUMAN and their relationship to its surroundings, the environment etc. Bostrom explains it 1000 times better than I do.

He also does a ted talk on cyborgs and the future of human kind with machines and the environment. He really successfully highlights the impact technology will have on our future, something that we all may already know, but he really just opens your eyes to how much impact it will really have.

In exploring the human/environment question, I think I have a lot of ideas that Iâm interested in. Iâm most drawn to the potential in hybrid human forms, and the future of âthe humanâ.Â
IDEAS ON the HUMAN AND ENVIRONMENT: The question I have chosen for the ADAD1002 poster assignment is the first one that is based around ecologies.
Art and design often explore relationships between humans and non-humans, the environment and ecology. How can contemporary art and design propose new possibilities for imagining the âhumanâ and the environment?
