Got a request from @rvioli to redraw an R. Crumb cartoon as spy and soldier

I wasn’t able to get at it for a while, but I figured that the 4th would be the most appropriate time to post it

11 years ago, I made this heavyxmedic gif. File got lost, blog got obscured, the gay mercenaries are still in my heart.

So I tried my best to remake the animation from scratch and give a better resolution file for you all!

Found a bunch of vtf files inside the overlay materials folder of the beta sfm files. I havent seen anyone post or talk about this one in particular so here you go.

All the files were listed as "faceend_" and then the name of the scene and the number of what order it goes in. But since the scenes came in parts of threes. I couldnt figure out for sure what order its supposed to go in. But im assuming this is the order.

Was young and inexperienced when he met Scout’s mom, and she was an “older woman” to him, teaching him a lot of life lessons. He’s not a sentimental guy, but she’s always stuck in his mind because of that.

Initially maintained his relationship with Scout’s mom as part of his cover but got emotionally involved because he didn’t know well enough not to. He’s had affairs as part of his work in the time since but has become an expert in compartmentalizing his emotions. Spy’s a professional and doesn’t want to be sloppy like he was that first time out.

Didn’t initially know about her seven (at the time) children but was in too deep by the time he found out. Oh, and she has a possessive estranged husband, too, and oh god what’s happening.

First dealt with the husband by scaring the shit out of him, enough to make him agree to let Scout’s mom divorce him without a fight and even correct his behavior, for a while. He would’ve been content to let it go at that, but…

When the now ex-husband eventually came sniffing back around, Scout’s mom was heavily pregnant, and Spy wasn’t feeling charitable. He killed him in the ex-husband’s apartment and made it look like an accident. He never told Scout’s mom about this. She has her suspicions but thinks it’s actually kind of romantic. Spy has no idea she suspects, convinced he managed the perfect crime. Wrapped up in his espionage mentality, it’s easy for him to forget how perceptive she is.

Didn’t voluntarily leave Scout and his mom but also didn’t fight to stay with them when the organization he worked for found out about the mess he’d made and reassigned him elsewhere. He promised to stay in touch and actually did, unknown to Scout, including regular monetary gifts as informal child support.

Didn’t want Scout to know about him growing up so that he wouldn’t get caught up in the world Spy operated in. (He regrets that in retrospect.) He also just had no idea how to be a father and didn’t want to risk being terrible at it. Spy is his job, leaving no room to play happy families.

Did make the time to check up on Scout when he was in the area, taking care that he was never noticed. He’s sat in on more than a few pee-wee baseball games.
