Happy Arbor Day from Table Rocks in Oregon.

The 4,864-acre Table Rocks Management Area is cooperatively owned and administered by the BLM and natureconservancy.

It might be time to plan your trip to Stevens Trail on the North Fork of the American Wild and Scenic River.

The wildflowers were peaking this weekend and lots of people were out. It’s hard to believe that such a wild place is less than an hour from Sacramento.  - BLMer and photographer Bob Wick

This month the BLM Colorado River Valley Field Office partnered with Upward Bound to lead an educational hike for local high school students. The students and BLMers from the field office hiked on Rifle Arch Trail, about 7 miles north of the City of Rifle, Colorado. While they hiked, they discussed Leave No Trace ethics, botany, ecology, public land uses and career opportunities.

BLM Botanist Judy Perkins talked about the area’s native plant communities and how they benefit wildlife, how climate change affects plant communities, what weeds really are and how we manage them, and habitat treatments we use to keep the land healthy. Petroleum Engineer Tim Barrett talked about the history of the uranium tailings visible from the trail they hiked as well as oil and gas operations on BLM lands. Recreation Planner Kim Miller talked about the seven Leave No Trace principles and how to recreate responsibly and enjoyably on public lands.

In their discussions, all three discussed their specific jobs with the BLM and how they got there – including the education and training they needed.

Young people who participated were able to play and learn in the outdoors at the same time, gain meaningful connections to public lands and experience they can use as they prepare to enter the workforce in the future.
