I'm too vampiric for this bullshit
Black Summer - Part 3
"What is that supposed to mean."
Ghoul took a deep breath. That could have ended very badly, and the rise in electricity in the air signaled that everyone knew. But how could he not start something? It was a pain to leave such a razor-sharp remark unanswered.
He went for a classic. "You know exactly what I mean, brainwashed city rat."
"Yo-" Roadkill started, but there was no time.
(@crowskullll )
Skull felt blood shooting in her face, a heat rising to her brain and making her vision wonky. While she was aware that Ghoul was picking exactly the words that he knew would make her go nuts, she could not let him play with her scars however he liked. It just wasnt fair.
There was so much shame about where Skull came from, inflicted by others, but mostly by herself. Over the years she was able to find pride in her past and in who she was now. But always with one foot stuck in the city, always with her brotherâs face staring back whenever she closed her eyes. And Ghoul didnt understand anything about what sheâd been through, he had no right to-
Skull leaped forwards and got very close to Ghoulâs face, their noses touching. âSay that again. Sand snorting pig.â
âAlright! Alright! Alright!â a river flowed out of Roadkillâs mouth as he and Poison moved as one with no need to even glance at each other, he went to take a hold of one each, while Roadkill took the role of master of deflation. He knew he wasn't going to calm them down, he wasn't really living for the way Ghoul was treating Skull, too. But he knew that if there was going to be someone to kill them with chatter, he and Poison were the best in the game. âThis is all fine and dare I say sexy but clearly-â his voice took a slight hint of the strain of holding a fuming Skull by the arms.
He turned into a hug from behind, like those cute couples in movies, he even made little kissing sounds in the hope to get the ever so slight smile out of their best friend. They were an old married couple, after all, them and Skull. âClearly!â he repeated, hoping that rising his voice a bit would distract the brawling kittens, with little success. âClearly this is only some months old tension we have stuck inside our glittery rotten souls, right?â.
While Skull appreciated her friend who was currently tied around her torso and clearly trying to help, she also didnt feel like being the bigger person and stepping down right now. Ghoul had stepped over the line of we can talk about this. Skull tried to escape Roadkill's grip, trying to wiggle out while scratching his hands. "Fucking let me go" she hissed and only got a whispering "calm down kitty cat" as a response. Ghoul was also struggling, Poison had taken his hands and tied them in his back. All they could do now is exchange looks of fury.
"Now!" Poison took the reins, though them qnd Roadkill were pretty much interchangeable in that moment, "Community building exercises!" that gained him a look of fiery confusion from the brawling almost-siblings.
"Yes! I said what I said! Ghoul, you say one thing that you like about Skull."
Ghoul breathed heavily, and didn't answer. Understandably, Poison decided to point his gun at him. "We're losing it, officially." whispered Roadkill, mostly to himself.
âwhat the hell is going onâ Ghoulâs face said. âyou gotta be kidding meâ Skullâs mouth said. âare you insane?â Skull said a little louder now, causing Poison to point his gun at her. Skull felt Roadkillâs grip loosen a little. Crow really hoped that he knew what Poison was up to since they were usually the one who could at least somewhat control him.
âEqually as sane as you little ratsâ Poison said with his gun still pointed at Skullâs face. âWhat, you gonna shoot me?â she said with her anger now directed at Poison too. Almost immediately she heard a ZAP and felt the sand next to her left foot explode. âWanna find out?â
"Uhm, baby? Could keep the gun for a safe and consensual environment?"
"Seriously!? You do that too?" the killjoy could tell that Ghoul was almost calming down, then it hit him: did his partner do it in purpose? If that were the case, perhaps he wasn't as stupid as he thought. Or perhaps they were just a sex maniac.
There were a few moments of complete and utter silence. Skull swore she could hear the heat sizzling on the sand and random faint motor sounds. After a while Poison lowered the gun for about a centimeter, barely noticable but still enough to cause a shift in the mood. Skull was still focussed on the gun and Poisons face when a sudden and very loud snorting sound came from Ghoul. To Skulls surprise he had a massive grin on his face, growing wider and distracting Poison to the point were he finally lowered his gun completely. âCOM-â Ghoul tried to speak but suddenly burst out into his snorting, inhaling laughter, struggling to get a word out. âCommunity- Communitybuildingâ Now it was also hard for Skull to keep a straight face, with this anticlimactic pressure relief. At this point Ghoul had entirely escaped Poisons grip and was on the ground on all fours.
Poison and Roadkill were still standing completely still while Skull couldnt resist joining Ghould laughter. âLets be reall that really was pretty much the weirdest way to put itâ, she said under her breath.
Roadkill breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn't that he actually that Poison was going to take someone's life that, still it was a somewhat uncharacteristic action by him. He chose he wasn't going to worry about that, for the time being. He let go of Skull, to then get searching. He started measuring the area with wide but wary steps, a lit cigarette magically appearing, already lit, between his lips. Ghoul shot a look at Skull, then at Roadkill. He said nothing, but the shared understanding was let's bring the chaos kid home.
Skull sat back on her motorbike, without a word to anyone. Even though the situation deflated as quickly as it escalated, she still felt something boiling in the back of her head. She caught the look of Ghoul who was on the way to the car with the others. He showed his teeth in a âit feels odd to smile at you but i also dont wanna do nothingâ kinda way. Skull showed no reaction whatsoever and started her motor. âIâm still pissed at youâ she said under her breath for nobody to hear.
They didnt talk about it, but all of them agreed that it was best to end the hunt for today and go home.
Once in the car, Roadkill and Poison just turned to look at Ghoul in the back, like a child that had just got back from school after doing something wrong but the teacher had phoned his parents about it.
"So?" Roadkill broke the silence "Mind telling us what in the FUCK happened between you and my best friend?"
It was Poison that broke the tension, they turned around to turn on the radio and get a sip of water. They then offered the bottle around, and both 'joys refused.
âNah thanksâ Ghoul said and lightly pushed the bottle away, seeming a little more aggressive than he meant it. He felt that things couldnt just go back to normal after what just went down, not without an intervention. Ghoul didnt know what to say but after he caught a cold look from Roadkill in the mirror the air got too thick and awkward again not to speak.
âMan i dont know okay? This seems to be her trigger.â Under his breath he added âat least she didnt run away this timeâ Poison turned around again, quicker this time, like a snake jumping to catch its prey. âwhat?â, he hissed. âOh yeah is this a bad time to mention that I was kind of the reason she left for months? Was definitely not on purpose thoâ this got a sigh out of both of the killjoys sharing the front.
âWhat did you say, Ghoulâ, Roadkill asked and before he could answer, Poison jumped in to add âyou know what I dont even want to know. Cant imagine it being any different than just now.â Ghoul watched the bushes passing by in a blur and was forcing himself to remember that day that he had tried to forget. It wasnt his proudest moment. âyou know shes not as innocent as you want her to be. Skull has a way of being the kind of pain in your ass that makes you unable to think straight. Can get all righteous and arrogant. And I just simply know how to fight back. Cant blame me for thatâ
"Can't blame you?! Can't fucking blame you?!" Roadkill felt his blood boil. The idea of his little brother alone in the desert and the danger she surely had to face, it was very hard for him to not just lean back and slap the daylights out of Ghoul. He looked outside the window, unable to say anything, unable to defend himself.
"I would've- I would've- Fucking tied her up, drugged her, beat the crap out of her- I don't know! You just let her go?! Let her sleep in a body bag again?! You remember how it fucking feels, Ghoul?!" he scratched his head, rough and fast, he needed to get a hold of himself. He took a breath but spoke through gritted teeth.
"We're supposed to keep each other safe. We built our house- we lived all these years, for each other! It's the only reason we're alive! Did you forget that? I was a fucking stray, my father dead and my mom off to Destroya knows where the fuck- you saved me. And I saved Skull. You better fucking remember that."
He felt Poison's hand on his thigh, they rubbed it subtly. Their eyes met. "That's enough." they mouthed, from behind their dark aviator shades. They were right, Roadkill took a deep breath and a black cigarette out of his pack.
"I'm sorry." he said as smoke filled the interior to then get caught by the rolled-down window: "It's just- I'd fucking die for you, Ghoul."
Ghoul didnt know what to say, so he didn't say anything at all. He wanted to say something like "well she was perfectly fine, wasnt she?" but he just stared at the back of Roadkill's chair, his eyes flickering in what was a mixture of rage and... shame? Wow it had been a long time since he felt this emotion.
"Just- fucking- get things right with Skull?" Poison was at a loss for words now too, his friend had expressed his thoughts better than they could have. "Not today. But you gotta sort shit out or we all get harmed in your little bitch fight."
Ghoul nodded, and only spoke a few words during the rest of half hour drive. Roadkill slowly felt calmer, but he still felt the shame, he understood his mistake. Still Skull could be a fucking pain in the ass sometimes, but if anyone knew, that'd be her best friend, right? He was sure he understood, that was what made that blowout particularly sting. They got to the Hideout, and he wondered how the fuck was he going to make things right with Skull. He thought they were good, but evidently some scars needed cleaning. Or perhaps it was just the riotous killjoy spirit that made them want to pick up fights for some fucking reason.
Roadkill dropped himself on the sofa, he really wanted to have a moment alone with his best friend. He hoped she'd catch the message, if he didn't go on to have sex with anyone there must be a reason to catch. He lit himself a cigarette and spread his legs, he was threatening to fall asleep, he noticed. When was the last time all of them slept? He recalled it being only when he fainted. Shit, maybe it was time. Later, after getting Skull's side of the deal.

Black Summer - Part Two
The gang all slept in one room, but the occasions when all six of them spent the night together under that same roof were rare. Sometimes, Roadkill would be out hunting for that nightâs fuck, Poison would be selling himself for drugs, Jet would sit for hours on the roof, looking at the stars. Kobra would join him often, and the others would hear the faint reach of conversation, sometimes even laughter. Skull spent a lot of time outside, Roadkill slept most of his nights in her bed. He made a pact with the rest of the gang not to tell her that he and Poison had had sex in her bed, Skull hid the fact that she already knew really well. Her bed was pretty damn comfortable.
That night, Poison and Roadkill were outside, with no intention to even cross eyes with the others. Enveloped in the throbs of power play and all those beautiful painful delights, they had been switching power positions since the moment they got there. In that moment it was Roadkillâs turn to be helpless. They were on all fours, in the dirt, with Poisonâs boot resting on their neck. He pushed them down, going for the classics of degradation, the well known hits such as:âPathetic little slut.â and âBeg for it, mutt.â. Well, that last one was more specifically tailored on Roadkill. After a couple of blows to their body, Roadkill was reaching that completely blissful headspace that she oh so dearly missed, that deep bond he shared with the infamous redhead. A state of mind that allowed them to completely give herself over to Poison, while still being able to answer to a simple stoplight safeword system. Poison leaned over them, a satisfied grin on his face, while pulling at the collar and leash that Roadkill always brought with them:âGood pup, you know you want to be-â he stopped, and Roadkill immediately looked up, confused. It took a second to shake off the haze and, when the fog cleared over their mind, she noticed Poison expression. It was this kind of forzenness, but not quite fear. Roadkill still had his boot on his neck, by then it had slightly moved over to his cheek. They pushed it down and sat up right to look at whatever it was that shook their weird psychic best friend so much. Then they froze as well.
âPlease, can you help me? Iâm lost.â
It sounded just like Roadkillâs voice, but not quite. It rang in their brains, as the grey matter itself was the source of it. Roadkill felt Poisonâs hand on their head, and wondered if maintaining a dominant role to make sure that he as a sub was alright was what made P snap out of the hazy state. Nevertheless, it was comforting. She didnât have to face it alone. She stood up, slowly, taking a couple of shaky breaths. She did wish she hadnât just taken two quite forceful blows to the ribs, after asking explicitly to be kicked like a stray just like some song sheâd heard on the radio and taped. It was the best before facing a double of oneself, a glitching ghost that looked just like them but at the same time not quite. She opened her mouth, then closed it again.
âWait. Youâre the hooky spooky vision I got in the car the other day!â Poison exclaimed, while Roadkill pulled out their raygun, just in case.
âIâm- Iâm tired. I think they killed my friends.â
The ghost didnât move a step towards them, it stood still and with a terrifyingly good posture. Poison lost a bit of his eerie enthusiasm. The other âjoy took a couple of steps forward, treading carefully like you thread when approaching a wild horse.
âDo you want to explain it to us so we can help you? Who is they?â
But the ghost said nothing, looking right through her and Poison. Roadkill thought that it looked as if she was experiencing connection issues, but on her existence. However, that was a silly thought: ghosts didnât work on data, didnât they? Wouldnât be the weirdest thing they had seen out in that circus they called the Zones.
In the meanwhile, and a bit stupidly, they had been steady steps towards the ghost, approaching it slowly. Roadkill reached, a bit insecure.Â
Poisonâs breath caught in his throat:âYou are not.â.
Roadkill held a hand up to the ghost of himself, who had an open gash on its forehead, she felt the stickiness of the blood on her fingers. Alright, by then she had started to get pretty fucking scared, but she was decided not to show it. That ghost seemed as terrified as them two were. The presence looked at the hand, then leaned in ever so slightly, and closed its empty eyes. And started crying, just like Poison had, in the car.Â
âTheyâre just scared. I think.â his voice shook as he spoke. âWe got you, ghosties. We can help you.â.
Then, just like Fake Poison did when Roadkill showed them kindness in the car, the presence started glitching. The moment it realized it, the physical killjoy felt the matter she was holding disappear, and the ghost started screaming. It screeched, loud, with an electrical ringing. They tried to push through it and reach the ghost, but fell right through it. Roadkill hit the floor, Poison stumbled, cursing and jumping to not step on his head.Â
âShit.â Poison said, when his unstoppable tumbling movement had finally found a halt. He rested his hands on his knees, as if he had just ran a marathon.Â
âFuck.â he added, breathlessly, after a bit. What else was there to say?
Roadkill found no reason to get up, they stayed in the dirt, their body finally relaxing. The two killjoys looked at each other, confused beyond reason. Then they heard another screeching, metallic sound. It came from the other side of the Hideout.
âGhoul and Skull! Fuck!â.
@crowskulllâ
After Ghoul and Skullâs heart to heart was over, they went back to joking. About everything and nothing at the same time, about Skullâs new name and appearance, about Ghoulâs outfit, about Poisonâs stubble. It seemed to be a common disease out here that nobody could stay serious for longer than absolutely necessary. But if Crow was being honest, this was exactly what she missed so much, the reason why she came back.
Suddenly Ghoul was looking over her shoulder, saying with an amused but ever so slightly confused expression on his face âOh Poison how the hell did you get in here? You and Roadkill done that fast?â Skull turned around to see a Poison standing behind her, a Poison who looked⊠off? âWhoa you okay?â She said, trying to touch his face, that suddenly had an open wound across the cheek. âAnd where did your stubble go? Ghoul and I were just saying-â But she couldnt finish her sentence, as instead of Party Poisons face, she was touching what felt like nothing mixed with cold glass. And then the figure before her started to flicker. Without taking her eyes off the thing that was pretending to be Poison, she said with a shakey voice: âummm Ghoul youre seeing this too right?â
âget away from that.â was all he said, dragging her away while she was slowly getting out her gun. all this time, the fake Poison was just staring. Their facial expression was that of pure terror.
And then Ghoul yelled in the windowâs direction, as loud as she could: âPOSION! YOU THERE??â
Roadkill grabbed Poisonâs hand as they ran. Despite everything, it felt good to be back. They couldnât avoid laughing as they ran, a somewhat anxious, maybe hysterical laugh. A laugh nevertheless, right?Â
They heard Ghoul screaming, they stopped in front of the Hideoutâs door, or better, they had to stop. Poison grabbed onto Roadkillâs jacket, but he couldnât save him from the impact with the ghost. Who stumbled forth, then turned around.
âIâm sorry, I shouldnât be here at all.â it said, with a tired voice, it felt like it arrived from a deep well of sadness in the back of its throat.
They heared the others arriving, unprepared for the weird image that two Poisons would create right in front of them. âHoly shit.â was all any of them had to say. Although it didnt feel like anybody was in any immediate danger since the creature seemed to be even more terrified than them, it sure felt wrong and disturbing to be in the presence of this.. being? What even was it?
âWhat even are you?â
Skull was able to form a sentence again, now that it was four against one. This question was now loaded with complete and utter confusion, not fear. The feeling of security strengthened when she heard footsteps of the other two remaining killjoys get closer.
âIâm sorry, I donât know if I can tell yet.â
Just like last time, Fake Poison manage to form one fully formed sentence before breaking down crying. Roadkill and Skull crossed gaze, Roadkill nodded. They immediately understood.
âDoesnât matter. You need help.â Roadkill said.
âWhat help!? We donât even know what this- this thing is!â Ghoul protested, then he searched Poisonâs approval, but found only uncertainty.
âThank you, thank you!â the presence smiled, but the mere movement of his face ripped open the gash that seemed to be barely healing. âWeâre trying to leave, they wonât let us, they killed my brothers!â it couldnât seem to stop crying. It reached for Skull, weak on his knees.
âTheyâre glitching again.â said Roadkill, almost matter of factly. He leaped forward, hugging and holding onto the glitching presence, that couldâve gone very wrong, very very wrong. Roadkill felt electricity, it went from a faint buzzing to a true pain. Fake Poison kept sobbing and apologising, Roadkill consciousness felt like it was gonna rip from their brain.
âWhat the fuck is going on?! Why is Roadkill just rolling with it?!â Poison wondered what possessed Ghoul to speak, they were still completely starstruck.
Roadkill fell to the ground, the presence disappeared with a final screech, just like the time before. It tore through everyoneâs ears. Poison ran up to the âjoy, frantically checking on them. Then they drew a sigh if relief.
âTheyâre breathing.â
âWell shit! Fuck!â Ghoul had no way of processing everything that happened except swearing and screaming, and kept at it for a couple of minutes more.
Skull was probably as upset and/or confused as Ghoul, but just didnt know any other way to show it other than to stare at the ground, her mind racing but standing still at the same time. After having collected some of her lost brain cells, she kneeled down to Roadkill and felt his head. It felt hot like the desert sand at noon. She looked at Poison who was sitting on their other side, fingers still on the pulse, a frown in his face. âHeâs gonna be fine.â they said, looking at Skull, who answered: âTheyâve seen this before right? It seemed like she knew what it was and how to handle it? Has he ever talked to you about this?â
Poison looked tired, they felt like they were going through some emotional hangover.
âLetâs go inside,â he said, simply âHave you eaten, baby?â he looked at Skull, in his eyes she read everything in due time.
He pulled Roadkillâs almost lifeless body with a quiet grunt, adjust his held on him, then kissed their forehead.
Posion and Crow put Roadkill on the couch, their hand flopping off one side, it almost looked like he was asleep. They felt his pulse stabalizing and her head cool down, so they thought it was best to just wait it out.
After that, Skull and Poison sat on chairs, shortly joined by Jet and Kobra. Ghoul was still in no condition to, well, be still.
âWhat the fuck happened in hereâ It was Jet that asked first. Kobra looked just as confused as Skull felt. âIf only I could tell you, manâ she said, looking at Posion. She also didnt want to bother him as he looked very tired, almost had a greyness to their face. Like he just aged about 30 years. The stubble didnt help either.
Roadkill saw black, and only black. So deep it became as bright as the sun. There was a buzzing sound. For osmeone that had just been knocked uncoscious by some electric, psychic waves, they felt weirdly counscious. They had a grip on their surroundings or rather, lack thereof. The buzzing continued on and on and on and on. Then a weird sound joined it, something between a panic alarm and an electric guitar. The note was familiar, it seemed to be played in a way only Ghoul would. It grew louder, so loud she could hear every single vibration, every single string being pulled.
The white, then black again. Was that some mean, dumb joke? He barely had any time to think more about that possibility. Finally: surroundings. Well, surroundings, but not quite. An unsettling, material dream. As if stepping inside a slow picture, one of those old movies from before the Helium Wars. A world with out air to fill it, a dream to see right through. It seemed like the Lobby, he remembered it from that time he had to escape Bat Cityâs maximum security facillity. He had hoped not to see it in a while, they never understood Skullâs fascination with that Witchforsaken city.
And, speaking of fascination, that was the name of the street, from what she could gather. Fascination Street, like that song. If Roadkill had had any power over their body, they wouldâve shrugged: the name was cool, sure, but meaningless for that time.
They squinted, trying to understand any more of that soulless picture. The only thing worth of note was the presence of Porno Droids, disheveled robot and all the picturesque character that populated the Lobby. Then, there. Something caught his atrociously inattentive eye. A person in a suit, a white hood over their head and hiding their neck, like a Scarecrowâs but completely white, though with some faded dark stains. They were walking into a building and, just as the door was about to close, the killjoy saw a BLI/nd nametag.
âKatâ it said âResearcher // Projekt Somnium - Black Summer unit.â
They came back loudly, gasping for air. Poison jumped up, startled like a cat and with s ridiculously girly screech.
âGet water, get water!!â, Poison screamed, Jet, who was visibly thankful to do something useful, instantly jumped up and went over to the stolen tanks. Skull rushed over to the couch, where Roadkill was still struggling to breathe normally. She put a hand on her back, knowing from her past that this usually made people calm down, well at least it used to calm her down when she was in a similar place as he was now. âits alright. Youre back with the living.â
Posion sank down on the couch and let out a big sigh. âDont do that again.â
âDonât plan to anytime soon.â the newly awake âjoy joked, his voice slightly hoarse, then their tone dropped:âIâve seen things. I think itâs related to that Fake Poison situation.â she explained everything, plus the more tid bits the fours had to clarify for Jet Star and Kobra Kid.
âI got something to add too.â Poison raised his hand, wrist limp, index finger up. âI saw you before. I mean, Fake You. In the car. Thatâs probably why I lost consciousness.â
Roadkill ignored the Fab 4âs protests and demands to know more, though she didnât give them any shit for it: if he had had a ghostly presence in his car, one that made one of his best friends lose conscience, heâd want to be notified promptly.Â
âYou said it was between you and Ghoul, right? Then why didnât it affect him, as well?â
âIâd like to be kept out of this.â
âToo bad. Youâre already deep in it.â Skull said with a laugh, beyond intrigued and with just enough presence of mind to make a sarcastic remark, the rest of the mind was enthralled in the situation.
âMaybe they can choose who to haunt, when they wantâ Kobra proposed. âTo me it didnt look like they were able to choose anything, they just looked lostâ said Skull, her head in her hands, trying to still wrap her mind around the fact that, yes, all of this just happened.
âSo what the fuck do we do now? We gotta do something right? Do we just wait until it happens again?â
âYeah, thatâs the one.â Roadkill gestured at Skull, the two exchanged a little smile, knowing they were both happy to be back, despite all. âAnyone got anything to smoke?â.
Poison passed him a pack and he got a cig with his teeth, right out of the pack. Everyone took it as a moment to think, silently. Then smoke filled the little praying circle they had going on, and Roadkill resume:âThere was something, I saw a name tag on a Scarecrow looking type it said Kat, ProjektâŠmhhâŠSomnium, which was what Fake Poison told me him name was, when I first saw him.â âWait, so that time I kind of manifested myself- ugh, this doenât make any sense.â Poisonâs head fell onto his had, bright red hair sprawling in disordely strips.
âNo, it does.â Roadkill added to Jetâs hand on the redheadâs shoulders âLetâs proceed orderly. You saw fake me, were in contact with fake me, it disappeared, psychic mumbo jumbo ensued. There you are in front of me, as some kind of electric conscience. It doesnât make sense, sure-â
âBut it kinda does.â nodded Jet Star.
âRight? Then, second point: the name tag. It sad KatâŠâ the joy took a marker out of their wide cargo shorts and wrote on their legs, trying to remember âI think it was ReasearchâŠProject Somnium, Black Summer UnitâŠor something like that.â
âBlack Summer? Like the song?â Ghoul asked.
âwait so what this means is-â Skull took a moment to think. âokay Iâm not actually sure about what this fucking means. Those visions you had though- were they shit you remembered from being in the city or was it psychedelic brain waves you got from hugging fake Poison? Why did you do that anyway? Why did the tag say Kat? I know a Kat but that couldn`t possibly be-â She needed to stop asking questions or they would just keep coming and never stop.
Roadkill started laughing at the river of question flowing out of his best friendâs mouth. As the first and most resounding answer, she got a joint from behind Poisonâs ear and lit it. She knew she had been chain smoking, yet it felt like the most genuine answer to the insanity of that situation. âAlright, so,â he took a drag, Poison inhaled his smoke like a true junkie âI think I was seeing something that Fake Poison wanted me to see, consciously or not I have no idea.â another drag. Pause. They lazily lifted the joint to be in everyoneâs sight:âWhatâs smoking?â the first one to answer was Ghoul, saying:âThe dracâs ass.â he won the smoke.
âWait-â what Skull said just hit Ghoul, perhaps it was the clarity that only comes to you after you win the joint:âYou said something about a Kat, like you know âem. Whoâs Kat?â
âthe one I stole the motor bike from, duhâ
âwhat motor bike???â said Ghoul and Kobra in unison, looks of excitement and confusion in their face. âOh itâs out there.â Skull pretended to be hyper-casual about it, just in order to annoy them. She pointed in the general direction of where she fell off earlier. Suddenly, they all got up and ran outside, Skull following them with a satisfied grin, thats how you get your fellow killjoyâs attention. Having a motor bike out here was like winning in the lottery. Not depending on the roads while still being fast, that was basicall the best way to blow drac-ass and not killing yourself in the process. After a few âAhhâs and âOOhâs and âfucking hellâs from Skullâs friends, Poison looked at her with the face of a true father and said âOkay but that still doesnt answer the question of who the fuck Kat isâ
Skull did her best to explain how Neon Kat, mostly known as Neon, was pretty much her least favourite person out in the zones, right below the Scarecrow that almost blew out her guts all those years ago. âThe worst part is that sheâs not even able to go all the way, somehow still calls herself a killjoy after selling out her friends. Youâd think they would at least have the guts to join Batt city, but no. Iâm always astounded by the audacity.â
âHave I met her?â Roadkill asked after being a bit too up close and personal with Skullâs motorbike. âDoesnât feel like the type thatâd walk away alive from a meeting with me.âÂ
âNo, you havent, at least as far as I knowâ Skull gave the motorbike seat a good pat, maybe even a little too aggressive.
âI met her for the first time a month ot so after I left, me and my new crew went to the edge of zone 3, my plan was to sneak off and pay the city a little visit. Never happened tho.â Skull looked down, she hated thinking about the fact that all this time when she was alone and âindependentâ, sheâd never actually gotten into the city. Thinking of her brotherâs face was getting more painful each day, she wasnt even sure what he looked like by now.
âWe made some really cool friends and had some really good times in an old gas station turned into a somewhat public hideout. Neon was one of them. But one day they ratted us out to a scarecrow. I saw her do it, not even trying to hide it. We all made it tho, except one of my friends.â Yet another slap to the seat. She felt Roadkill opening his mouth to say something, but Crow didnt let her. âNo thereâs no way. Neon never went to the city, she would never become a high ranking city rat. Neon is he definition of spineless, but likes the aesthetic of being a killjoy too much to give it up. All that pigs like them do is make deals with scarecrows to get themselves something they want.â
Roadkill could feel a hint of uncertainty in Skullâs resolute tone, a small crack. She decided it was not wise, with the time being, leaving that crack alone.
He smiled and pulled out his switchblade knife.
âHear me out, Birdie.â the mere idea got into his brain, arousing him. âWhat you say we give this Kat a visit?â
Poison had already guess their intentions the moment Skull started speaking, everyone could tell that sure, it was a good idea to try out, better than nothing for sure. But Roadkill was a bit to excited at the proposal.
âI just got a very confusing semi.â was the only way Ghoul contributed to the conversation.
âLike- right now?â Skull couldnt lie, that didnt quite match up with her plan of chilling out for a few days. But then, maybe it was actually a good idea to go on an adventure again, finally as one reunited family.
âOkay. I guarantee you that were not gonna find out anything useful, but sure, why not. Maybe sheâs still where I left her to bleed out.â
âOh, perfect!â Roadkill clapped their hands together, the blade clanged against their thick rings. Ghoul kept eyeing the blade, Poison caught him and rolled his. âJust what the doctor ordered! Family roadtrip!â they continued, only to be interrupted by Poison:âHold on there, tiger. I think this is more of a two, three people maximum job.â, the other two nodded and Roadkill scratched the back of his head, he did get a bit ahead of himself.
âWell, ehmâŠâ he faked his confidence a bit, his flamboyance betrayed his mind while making him quite funny to the others.
âWell what?â Ghoul couldnât hide a grin.
âWell, whatever! One of us has to go. And I"m the one with the knife in his hand, Skull is the my comfort white girl so I canât leave her behind! Poison has that hot stubble and I canât think straight when I look at him, and you have been railing me in your mind so hard for the last three hours that if I stand too close to you, I can hear myself moan !â
âOh lord really?â Skull rolled her eyes. âWell if you aske me I really dont care who comes with us, as I said I dont think itâs gonna lead anywhere.â Skull took one look at Poison who was side-eyeing her and Roadkill. âBut our Poison here clearly wants to come so why not. But I swear to god if itâs only so you get to fuck this guy-â she bumped an elbow into Roadkill âthen Iâm gonna take my motorbike and leave you behind in the dust.â
Skull did not wait for a reaction and instead took off back to the hideout, as she got an idea of something she needed to do before leaving. âTime to give you a makeoverâ she said, on her way back to the bike where her family was still standing, two spray paint cans in black and blue in her hands. âYou guys can use the carâ, she went to town on the ugly yellow Neon Kat colour, âBut no way Iâm not gonna take this oppotunity and rub THIS in her faceâ she said with a wide gesture to the no longer yellow motor bike.
Roadkill smiled bright at his best friendâs enthusiasm, he missed her taste for pettiness, that was one of her most prized virtues.
Poison gave him a look, then looked at Ghoul, then gestured to the car with his head. Ghoul got very excited, leaving the other two joys to wonder if it was just going to be Party Poison and his two dogs. Poison seemed to be the one most focused on the situation, at least he thought about the situation at all. Roadkill and Ghoul were thinking about two different things, but certainly not the situation. Roadkill was eager to put his knife to use, as he hadnât had the chance in a while. Ghoul hadnât thought of the situation for a second, his usual reaction to things he wouldnât understand was either violent confusion or not giving a single fuck, he was there to get off on Roadkill scaring some fucker with a knife, then hopefully get what he wanted. Anyways, the three of them sat in the car, Roadkill turned the radio on, a soft voice spoke, introducing a song by MC5.
They waited for Crow Skull to speed up in front of them, gave her some space so they were not going to get lost in the cloud of smoke.
âHopefully the drive isnât too long, Iâve got a boner again.â
âThat can be fixed.â Roadkill and Ghoul caught each other saying the same thing, then chuckled. Roadkill, being the one that hadnât seen Poisonâs penis in a while, was given honorary green light. Ghoul wondered how was Poison able to drive and getting head at the same time, he always needed to stop. Practice, he guessed.
âWait, I think Skullâs pulling over.â
âHell no, thereâs no way Iâm getting put of this car before Iâm finished.â Poisonâs voice was strained and sounded very very hot but, as much Ghoul was enjoying the show, and he was enjoying it a lot, he knew it wasnât smart to leave his friend alone outside in potentially unsafe territory.
âBe quick.â he chuckled, then left the car, and Poison stretched himself, then looked down. At the hand that tangled into Roadkill faded blonde hair.
âYou heard the dog, be quick.â
âThis is where I last saw themâ Skull yelled in Ghouls direction, pointing down at the dirt that belonged to that street near Route Guano. She still saw some old, lost speckles of blood mixed in with the sand and small stones. Skull noticed that the others still werent coming out of the car but chose to neither question nor acknowledge it. Ghoul squatted down in the sand, looking at the sand, then in Skulls face. He had picked up a fist full of sand that he was not letting trickle back down on the ground. âWell- after analyzing the traces thoroughly, I can say that this is not helpful in the slightest.â, he said. Crow stroked her chin while nodding in a mocking way. âHmm.. ah yes I agree and furthermore I can say that this was a big waste of time.â They grinned at each other, both glad that things were back to the way they were before. âLets wait for the others and think about what to do.â
Roadkill stumbled out of the car, he stopped to check himself in the side window, the stumbled ulteriorly forward, the sand there was a bit too soft for his high heeled boot.Â
âSo, team,â he draped an arm over Skull with a smile on his face that was just a tad too wide. Poison followed suit, and did the same thing his friend did, one never knew what exciting new places cum could make its way to. As they stopped, Roadkill continued:âHow do we feel, what are the vibrations?â.
âMan I dont know what to tell you, Neon could have gone anywhere. Or not gone, probably picked up by someone because trust me I made sure she could not walk.â Skull saw the half-open fly on Poisons pants. âBut you guys clearly had fun so I guess this mission was already a succes.â She clapped in her hands with false excitement and turned back towards their vehicles - âAlright! Letâs go home then!â
Roadkill lost his balance as Skull turned, taking an unsteady step forward. They felt somewhat drunk, but they were sure they hadnât touched alcohol all day. That thought stayed for very little in their brain, though.
It was Poison that answered first.
âAre you sure you donât want us to take a lap? Not even a tiny lap?â he was visibly confused, they had got there, not that it took very long, but might as well, right? Ghoul had lit himself a cigarette, and was taking the late night in, letting his eyes get lost in the utter nothingness on the side of the street. He did look like he was searching, though, one had to give it to him.
Skull let out an unvoluntary sigh. She wasnt trying to be salty and overly annoyed, after all this was quality time with the people she hadnt seen in a long time. Still, the words coming out of her mouth sounded more harsh than she intended them to. âLook, sure we can look around. We might even find something that leads us to Neon. But then what? What do you expect to find out? Kat doesnt have anything to do with those creatures we saw back there.â Skull pointed over her shoulder, roughly in the direction of where the hideout was. Poison and Roadkill looked at Crow with a slight frown. Ghoul was still just chilling with his cigarette. âWhoa there tiger-â said Poison, âwhatâs with all this negativitiy? Did someone take a piss on your shoes or whatâ âNo itâs just-â Skull looked away. âI think this is a waste of time, if we wanna find out anything we should go right into the city.â
Ghoul chuckled, which made all of then turn. He took a long drag from the cigarette. There it was, again. That reckless impulse, that suicidal call to the mothership, he thought as he flicked the cigarette away. It shone, pretending to be a shooting star. He felt his body tense up. The city, what was there that would attract a wretched soul so bad after all the torture it endured?
"What is it Ghoulie?" Roadkill asked, taking a light from his box and struggling with the flam a bit.
He gave a short, sharp laugh:"No wonder our feathered friend wants to go into the city." he had a hint of sarcasm to his voice, and Poison didn't like it at all. But such was family, siblings fought, made up, threw knives sometimes. Love was the foundation of everything they had, they had nothing else, nothing more. He didn't want to live to see the foundations crack.
