Black Summer - Part 3
"What is that supposed to mean."
Ghoul took a deep breath. That could have ended very badly, and the rise in electricity in the air signaled that everyone knew. But how could he not start something? It was a pain to leave such a razor-sharp remark unanswered.
He went for a classic. "You know exactly what I mean, brainwashed city rat."
"Yo-" Roadkill started, but there was no time.

Skull felt blood shooting in her face, a heat rising to her brain and making her vision wonky. While she was aware that Ghoul was picking exactly the words that he knew would make her go nuts, she could not let him play with her scars however he liked. It just wasnt fair.
There was so much shame about where Skull came from, inflicted by others, but mostly by herself. Over the years she was able to find pride in her past and in who she was now. But always with one foot stuck in the city, always with her brotherâs face staring back whenever she closed her eyes. And Ghoul didnt understand anything about what sheâd been through, he had no right to-
Skull leaped forwards and got very close to Ghoulâs face, their noses touching. âSay that again. Sand snorting pig.â
âAlright! Alright! Alright!â a river flowed out of Roadkillâs mouth as he and Poison moved as one with no need to even glance at each other, he went to take a hold of one each, while Roadkill took the role of master of deflation. He knew he wasn't going to calm them down, he wasn't really living for the way Ghoul was treating Skull, too. But he knew that if there was going to be someone to kill them with chatter, he and Poison were the best in the game. âThis is all fine and dare I say sexy but clearly-â his voice took a slight hint of the strain of holding a fuming Skull by the arms.
He turned into a hug from behind, like those cute couples in movies, he even made little kissing sounds in the hope to get the ever so slight smile out of their best friend. They were an old married couple, after all, them and Skull. âClearly!â he repeated, hoping that rising his voice a bit would distract the brawling kittens, with little success. âClearly this is only some months old tension we have stuck inside our glittery rotten souls, right?â.
While Skull appreciated her friend who was currently tied around her torso and clearly trying to help, she also didnt feel like being the bigger person and stepping down right now. Ghoul had stepped over the line of we can talk about this. Skull tried to escape Roadkill's grip, trying to wiggle out while scratching his hands. "Fucking let me go" she hissed and only got a whispering "calm down kitty cat" as a response. Ghoul was also struggling, Poison had taken his hands and tied them in his back. All they could do now is exchange looks of fury.
"Now!" Poison took the reins, though them qnd Roadkill were pretty much interchangeable in that moment, "Community building exercises!" that gained him a look of fiery confusion from the brawling almost-siblings.
"Yes! I said what I said! Ghoul, you say one thing that you like about Skull."
Ghoul breathed heavily, and didn't answer. Understandably, Poison decided to point his gun at him. "We're losing it, officially." whispered Roadkill, mostly to himself.
âwhat the hell is going onâ Ghoulâs face said. âyou gotta be kidding meâ Skullâs mouth said. âare you insane?â Skull said a little louder now, causing Poison to point his gun at her. Skull felt Roadkillâs grip loosen a little. Crow really hoped that he knew what Poison was up to since they were usually the one who could at least somewhat control him.
âEqually as sane as you little ratsâ Poison said with his gun still pointed at Skullâs face. âWhat, you gonna shoot me?â she said with her anger now directed at Poison too. Almost immediately she heard a ZAP and felt the sand next to her left foot explode. âWanna find out?â
"Uhm, baby? Could keep the gun for a safe and consensual environment?"
"Seriously!? You do that too?" the killjoy could tell that Ghoul was almost calming down, then it hit him: did his partner do it in purpose? If that were the case, perhaps he wasn't as stupid as he thought. Or perhaps they were just a sex maniac.
There were a few moments of complete and utter silence. Skull swore she could hear the heat sizzling on the sand and random faint motor sounds. After a while Poison lowered the gun for about a centimeter, barely noticable but still enough to cause a shift in the mood. Skull was still focussed on the gun and Poisons face when a sudden and very loud snorting sound came from Ghoul. To Skulls surprise he had a massive grin on his face, growing wider and distracting Poison to the point were he finally lowered his gun completely. âCOM-â Ghoul tried to speak but suddenly burst out into his snorting, inhaling laughter, struggling to get a word out. âCommunity- Communitybuildingâ Now it was also hard for Skull to keep a straight face, with this anticlimactic pressure relief. At this point Ghoul had entirely escaped Poisons grip and was on the ground on all fours.
Poison and Roadkill were still standing completely still while Skull couldnt resist joining Ghould laughter. âLets be reall that really was pretty much the weirdest way to put itâ, she said under her breath.
Roadkill breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn't that he actually that Poison was going to take someone's life that, still it was a somewhat uncharacteristic action by him. He chose he wasn't going to worry about that, for the time being. He let go of Skull, to then get searching. He started measuring the area with wide but wary steps, a lit cigarette magically appearing, already lit, between his lips. Ghoul shot a look at Skull, then at Roadkill. He said nothing, but the shared understanding was let's bring the chaos kid home.
Skull sat back on her motorbike, without a word to anyone. Even though the situation deflated as quickly as it escalated, she still felt something boiling in the back of her head. She caught the look of Ghoul who was on the way to the car with the others. He showed his teeth in a âit feels odd to smile at you but i also dont wanna do nothingâ kinda way. Skull showed no reaction whatsoever and started her motor. âIâm still pissed at youâ she said under her breath for nobody to hear.
They didnt talk about it, but all of them agreed that it was best to end the hunt for today and go home.
Once in the car, Roadkill and Poison just turned to look at Ghoul in the back, like a child that had just got back from school after doing something wrong but the teacher had phoned his parents about it.
"So?" Roadkill broke the silence "Mind telling us what in the FUCK happened between you and my best friend?"
It was Poison that broke the tension, they turned around to turn on the radio and get a sip of water. They then offered the bottle around, and both 'joys refused.
âNah thanksâ Ghoul said and lightly pushed the bottle away, seeming a little more aggressive than he meant it. He felt that things couldnt just go back to normal after what just went down, not without an intervention. Ghoul didnt know what to say but after he caught a cold look from Roadkill in the mirror the air got too thick and awkward again not to speak.
âMan i dont know okay? This seems to be her trigger.â Under his breath he added âat least she didnt run away this timeâ Poison turned around again, quicker this time, like a snake jumping to catch its prey. âwhat?â, he hissed. âOh yeah is this a bad time to mention that I was kind of the reason she left for months? Was definitely not on purpose thoâ this got a sigh out of both of the killjoys sharing the front.
âWhat did you say, Ghoulâ, Roadkill asked and before he could answer, Poison jumped in to add âyou know what I dont even want to know. Cant imagine it being any different than just now.â Ghoul watched the bushes passing by in a blur and was forcing himself to remember that day that he had tried to forget. It wasnt his proudest moment. âyou know shes not as innocent as you want her to be. Skull has a way of being the kind of pain in your ass that makes you unable to think straight. Can get all righteous and arrogant. And I just simply know how to fight back. Cant blame me for thatâ
"Can't blame you?! Can't fucking blame you?!" Roadkill felt his blood boil. The idea of his little brother alone in the desert and the danger she surely had to face, it was very hard for him to not just lean back and slap the daylights out of Ghoul. He looked outside the window, unable to say anything, unable to defend himself.
"I would've- I would've- Fucking tied her up, drugged her, beat the crap out of her- I don't know! You just let her go?! Let her sleep in a body bag again?! You remember how it fucking feels, Ghoul?!" he scratched his head, rough and fast, he needed to get a hold of himself. He took a breath but spoke through gritted teeth.
"We're supposed to keep each other safe. We built our house- we lived all these years, for each other! It's the only reason we're alive! Did you forget that? I was a fucking stray, my father dead and my mom off to Destroya knows where the fuck- you saved me. And I saved Skull. You better fucking remember that."
He felt Poison's hand on his thigh, they rubbed it subtly. Their eyes met. "That's enough." they mouthed, from behind their dark aviator shades. They were right, Roadkill took a deep breath and a black cigarette out of his pack.
"I'm sorry." he said as smoke filled the interior to then get caught by the rolled-down window: "It's just- I'd fucking die for you, Ghoul."
Ghoul didnt know what to say, so he didn't say anything at all. He wanted to say something like "well she was perfectly fine, wasnt she?" but he just stared at the back of Roadkill's chair, his eyes flickering in what was a mixture of rage and... shame? Wow it had been a long time since he felt this emotion.
"Just- fucking- get things right with Skull?" Poison was at a loss for words now too, his friend had expressed his thoughts better than they could have. "Not today. But you gotta sort shit out or we all get harmed in your little bitch fight."
Ghoul nodded, and only spoke a few words during the rest of half hour drive. Roadkill slowly felt calmer, but he still felt the shame, he understood his mistake. Still Skull could be a fucking pain in the ass sometimes, but if anyone knew, that'd be her best friend, right? He was sure he understood, that was what made that blowout particularly sting. They got to the Hideout, and he wondered how the fuck was he going to make things right with Skull. He thought they were good, but evidently some scars needed cleaning. Or perhaps it was just the riotous killjoy spirit that made them want to pick up fights for some fucking reason.
Roadkill dropped himself on the sofa, he really wanted to have a moment alone with his best friend. He hoped she'd catch the message, if he didn't go on to have sex with anyone there must be a reason to catch. He lit himself a cigarette and spread his legs, he was threatening to fall asleep, he noticed. When was the last time all of them slept? He recalled it being only when he fainted. Shit, maybe it was time. Later, after getting Skull's side of the deal.
The wind was punching in Skulls face while riding the bike, cooling her head and helping her to calm down a bit. When she got off and went inside the hideout she still had a sinister frown on her face, but the tension in her chest had softened a bit.Â
She saw Roadkill on the sofa, his legs wide open and his arm across the armrest, head tilted to the side as if almost asleep. Skull decided to plunk down next to her friend, but did not say a word. That was when Ghoul went inside too, avoiding both of their looks and went straight around the corner where Skull could hear what was probably him falling face first onto his bed - something he usually did. Roadkill let out a sigh, letting Skull know he was still awake.
Skull looked at the killjoy and was met with one raised eyebrow that left her with no choice but to finally say something. âLook Iâm sorry i let things escalate but he was being a major dick you knowâ
