hard to hate running when this is your trail
A few weeks ago I posted a staged photo where I said I was looking forward to the day when my shin would let me stride out with full abandon again. Well, that day definitely came yesterday evening when a few crazies came together to see how quickly they could scale a bunch of big rocks and then sprint back down to the trailhead. It’s effort and intensity and camaraderie in its most distilled, unfettered format on some of the best terrain in the world, and I was definitely striding out with full abandon and this photo was definitely not staged. I BROKE SIX IN THE MILE
GUYS at the timed mile today I broke six minutes!!! I did a 5:57 and I’m honestly still in shock. I’ve been working so hard for this for 2 years. This was all I wanted. I was starting to give up on this goal, it was such a reach goal. But today I just ran fast and pulled a sub-6 out of my butt and still felt like I could have gone harder.
I wasn’t even planning to break 6. From the time the stopwatch went off, I just ran a pretty decent first lap like normal, but then instead of getting tired at around 600m, I still felt strong. I started to lead the pack I was running in and passing girls that I usually follow. I came through the 800 in a new 800 pr but I still wasn’t thinking about breaking 6. I started getting tired at the 1000m, but not so badly that I was dreading every step. at the 1200m, the guys coach yelled that I was on a 5:55 pace, and then I actually considered reaching my goal. I told myself all I had to do was 1:35 and I’d be there. I run that in practice all the time. With 300m to go, I just ran fast. I ran because I love to run. At the las 50m, I looked down at my watch real quick and saw 5:48. I was gonna do it. I ran really fast. I finished. And I cried because I was so happy. I think it was one of the best feelings I have experienced in my life.
If you’re going through a hard running time, please don’t give up. Last year I thought there was no hope for me. I was going to quit. I thought I would never be fast again. I had bad race after bad race after bad race and tears and tears and tears. But it gets better. It may take months, or a year, or 2 years, but everythings going to work out.
