Day 116 - Broadway

Very thankful to everyone who supported me during this project, especially those who ran with me in person. As an extrovert attempting a largely individual project, it’s encouraging to have verbal support, and even uplifting to get likes, comments, and shares on social media.

My hope is that over the course of this project, you have been inspired to get the Charity Miles app, and use it to log your walks, runs, or bike rides to effortlessly give money to charity to provide for the less fortunate.

My wish is that this also would inspire you to take on big challenges. Figure out what you want to do, and do it. It’s that simple. And while everyone wants to boost their own self-importance, why not take a different road and boost the importance of the voiceless instead? Frankly, we’ll be dead in 100 years, so live for what’s eternal and only lightly grasp that which is fleeting. 

if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry    and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness,    and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always;    he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land    and will strengthen your frame.

Day 115 - Entrances & Exits

Today, on my penultimate run, I covered the entrances and exits for the Lincoln Tunnel, Midtown Tunnel, and Queensboro Bridge. It’s fitting that I call it “Entrances & Exits” for more reason than one:

I literally ran the entrances and exits to the main routes going in and out of Manhattan.

This run is metaphorical of my exiting this project and entering into other pursuits.

I ran by the United Nations to remind me of all the diverse neighborhoods of nationalities that call New York City home.

Near the United Nations, I ran past a quote from Isaiah (pictured above) looking forward to a time when wars will cease between nations.

I happened to be listening to a Freakonomics podcast during my run that discussed the elimination of nation borders in regards to immigration.

It reminds me of the ways New Yorkers like myself have moved to this city to pursue lofty goals, enduring the struggles and rewards of this beautiful town.

Day 114 - FiDi

Today was my ante-penultimate run.

I got to look at the Freedom Tower from the south this time.

I took a pic of the last 4,5 subway stop in Manhattan.

Last run the took place in just one district.

Day 113 - Hudson River

Today was my most unobstructed run of my project! Usually there are stoplights or crowds slowing me down, but instead I only had my own endurance to overcome. It’s also the longest running day of my project, and since I’m almost complete, I’m past the hardest part!

Day 112 - Financial District

U2 sang about Where the Streets Have No Name, but I went where the names have no streets. A large area is blocked off from public vehicles downtown in the historic/financial center.

That Charging Bull statue is always surrounded by tourists. I just happened to snap a shot when two of them were exchanging places to pose with it. I called it Exchange Place, which I’m pretty sure is original.

Day 111 - Financial District

Wouldn’t you know it, my last few streets of my project happen to be the hardest to navigate in a straight line. When you look at my big Manhattan map, it looks minimal. In person, though, the streets are so close together, with varying lengths and directions that it takes the utmost planning to avoid the least backtracking.

Finally in FiDi! For the first time in my project, I took a subway to its last stop--the subway in question being the 6 train. Now the streets get narrower and I have to people-dodge during daylight hours every though tourists don’t typically visit here! When I look at my wall map, I see the non-colored part gets especially smaller every day I run.

Day 108 - East River

Today I started dressing up like Forrest Gump for my runs. He ran for no particular reason. I’m running for these charities. After my project is done, I’ll see how many people got provided clean drinking water from me just running for Charity Miles. Also we’ll see how much I raised for third-world girls going to school and feeding hungry Americans in need.

Day 105 - Chinatown and the Lower East Side

Chinatown was the name of a 1974 police drama. Well, tonight the dark rainy night have the drama and there were lots of police around since this is the City Hall area of town.

Day 104 - Lower East Side

Today was like running in a film noir. I can hear the sultry saxophone music filter through a smoky nightclub as the detective narrates…

The rain went pitter-patter on the streets that night. I went to a place called The Corner. The locals who knew it well called it La Esquina. Christmas lights hugged the trees like my wet jacket clung to my chest. I wanted to call it a night, but I’d come this far; there was no turning back now.
