I'm watching Utena for the first time as a older anime generation fan (I don't know why I waited this long) and as of *checks notes* episode 12, I can clearly see the heavy inspiration points the authors took from Ikeda sensei, and I kind of like the personal spin they gave to the themes.

However the more I watch (and I'm aware of being at the very beginning of the serie and I still need to read the manga) but I simply cannot understand the RoV and Oniisama e bashing stemming from an Utena watch.

The works share themes but are fundamentally different. Utena is way more comedic, it has heavy fantasy elements that of course causes the show to have a different vibe entirely. Some of the ailments of the characters read as "cartoonish", or still not close to immediate reality as some other elements of ikeda's works are.

I am liking Utena so far, I am still leaning more towards the heavy psychology elements and darker vibe of RoV and Oniisama e, but I am curious to see where this serie leads me, I will absolutely comment more as I go on with the serie~☆
