There were plenty of brilliant minds behind the enhancement program; Tougou spent time during his first recovery period looking further into the enhancement program. All of the participants were willing ones, albeit a small portion of them came from dire situations. It certainly was predatory to offer salvation to people who were on the brink, and Jin's machinations, in addition to G Corporation's actions set the stage for many cases of desperation.
"Once you make it past the first one, the hard part's over."
Tougou still had some reservations and so he left a fully recovered Six to do a little more hunting around for any other information that would be beneficial to them. The most Tougou could do was keep the information to the side for a rainy day, possibly leave it with Lars, but that would be yet another possible source of anxiety for his friend to sit with. Tougou thought Lars was already dealing with enough.
Tougou had never been more thankful that he had to keep his eyes on the road. Lars' confession lanced through him, cut him more than any scalpel or laser could. It dug into him the way the augmentations did, and he thought he deserved that pain more than Lars' forgiveness.
"You still need me?" Tougou questioned, and he bit back another chuckle. "Lars, look at what you've accomplished without me. You did more than just take a chunk of the Mishima Zaibatsu's forces, you turned them into an efficient and skilled army that could contend with three separate parties."
The only difference Tougou being around would have done was simply that he would have been alive. The situation now is...delicate for lack of a better term. If Tougou could go back, he would but he was not about have Lars waste resources trying to compete with the enhancement program's modifications.
"Have you taken a moment, Lars? Really taken some time?" Tougou asked. "And before you give me an excuse that you can't, there are people still getting up and going to work, or being with loved ones."
Had Tougou not been driving, Lars would have jabbed him in the arm. He knew he was going to say something like that. He kept the army running like a well oiled machine, and now thanks to Lee, had made significant strides on the coverage front. Better equipment and better facilities had also done wonders for recruitment.
“And you think I could have done that without you?” Lars retorted, a stare-down taking place of a strike, “Even if you couldn’t fight anymore, you’re my brother; you were always more than just my lieutenant.”
Every early misstep, every triumph, every promotion, Tougou had been there. In or out of the uniform, he was his companion first. He had confided things in him that he hadn’t even told his own family. He was the only one who understood his plights and experiences down to the fibre.
“I could never ask you to leave your post, I know it isn’t that simple. I just can’t handle us being strangers.” Tougou’s work in the shadows benefited him greatly, but he didn’t want those shadows to be a necessity anymore.
It was Tougou’s turn to ask questions. Even if he lied, the overwork was visible in his features, especially the dark circles. Sighing, Lars faced all the way front, head firmly on the backrest.
“No," a simple but effective answer, “I don’t trust anyone other than myself to do this right.”
The ride finally switched into less highway and into more of the residential roads. As Tougou stopped at a red light, he had to take a moment to stifle some laughter. That was just like Lars--not trusting any one else to do right, especially when it came to the larger picture of this whole entire conflict. There Lars was, once again, picking up the mantle as if he were Atlas; perhaps if Tougou revealed he was alive sooner, then perhaps- No. There was no point in wondering about the what-ifs or maybes anymore. "Did you get another Captain just for show, Lars?" Tougou asked. "You should be relying on your team as much as they rely on and believe in you." It was true, Tougou had been there for everything, watched Lars go from promotion to promotion and garner the admiration from his men. Tougou certainly was there when the initial strike of rebellion had begun, and now it had become clear that the significant shift began when Lars lost Tougou. Guilt had begun to resurface, specifically the image Tougou had burned into his brain of Lars' distraught features. Tougou's otherwise focused gaze faltered for a fraction of a second while his hands tightened on the steering wheel. He was tempted to ask who was holding up Yggdrasil while Lars had taken this time away (that looked more and more to be needed), but wisely Tougou refrained. When the traffic light changed and allowed Tougou to proceed, he brought his eyes back to the road. The shop was a mere six doors down and it would allow Tougou to pull in and park.
"By the way, you could have done this without me--you have done it without me. If you weren't as great as you are, the UN wouldn't be keeping their attention on you. Come to think of it..." Tougou trailed off. He wondered why more often than not about the UN keeping their files up to date, but he would hold off on any assumptions; there was no need in bringing up anything to Lars, not when there was a much more pressing matter on hand: Getting the man something palatable to eat that wasn't on a commercial aircraft.
