Hey y’all! I made a little doodad on how I write body paragraphs (or at least how I’ve been taught to write them). I know it’s not perfect, but I hope it helps someone out there!
Dark Academia Books for Students of Politics and International Relations:
I mean, heck, I am no expert but my need to see this niche ass post is a lot so here goes.
The Prince: Machiavelli- do I NEED to explain this one. Its a seminal text in politics and political philosophy and when you listen to the ideas described in it they can sound a little crazy but once you read it you realise they are still crazy but grounded in something very real. Also its short as heck and an easy read.
Politics among Nations: The Struggle for Power and Peace- Hans J Morgenthau. I had to pick this one up for my coursework last semester and I thought it would be a snooze fest but no. I was drawn in and I haven’t finished it since but I do plan to get back to it at my leisure.
The End of History and the Last Man: Francis Fukuyama- YES, I fundamentally disagree with Fukuyama on so many points. YES, it is still one of my favourite books of all time. it is a very riveting discussion of political philosophy, history and international relations. If you are interested in any of those topics, pick it up. You won’t regret it.
How Democracy Ends: David Runciman- captivatingly written, great arguments, and a very unique voice. Super relevant in today’s international political atmosphere and if you are interested in studying the rise of right wing authoritarian governments across the globe, this is a great place to start.
Thomas Hobbes: Leviathan- another one that I just feel like i don’t need to explain. Again haven’t read it fully yet, but its quite chill inducing and the basis for most of the contemporary discussion on state, liberalism, authoritarianism, rights and so forth.
These were just my recommendations, and I by no means claim that they cover the entire gamut of the field. In fact, I would consider myself a noob still where texts relating to politics or IR are concerned, so feel free to give your recommendations and opinions as well!
dark academia critics
dark academia is like one of my favourite aesthetics however there are certain things/issues that bother me about this whole aesthetic
1. where is the diversity?
have you ever come across any dark academia posts that included any people of color. everywhere I go, all I see is elite white kids. I would die to see japanese/korean/indian /pakistani/ african/ middle eastern dark academia students often wearing their ethnic attires and embracing their cultures.
2. eat the rich
I know the whole theme about dark academia is ivy league/ rich elite students but imagine middle class dark academia srudents who are not necessarily clad in expensive attires rather wearing clothes bought from the thrift stores studying on scholarships, who own second hand books and antique/vintage items from some local flee markets or thrift stores.
3. fuck that Greek philosophy
not that I hate Greek philosophy but all dark academia posts do talk about is western art/architechture/ mythologies / history and philosophy etc. I would love to read and discuss persian poetry and history , south asian mythologies, japanese/Arabic/korean calligraphy, Muslim world's art and architecture.
4. what's up with that nerd shit.
why are dark academia students always protrayed as nerds, reserve, quiet, hates to have a social life, perfectionist who can't afford to get any grades lower than As etc like even the best students have their ups and downs, what matters is the passion and the will to do better. It's okay to have a life outside books, to have romantic dates, to prank, to hangout with yout friends, to skip classes, to be unorganized...its more realistic.
Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House was published sixty years ago today. The novel begins with one of the best openings I have ever read:
“No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.”

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) | dir. Céline Sciamma
We like to think that we are perfect just the way we are. That’s what society pushes on us constantly nowadays. It is the mindset of the people, it is the mindset we have deeply embedded in our imperfect souls. From one point of view, yes we are beautiful just the way we were created, physically, the way God molded us individually. I understand that people use this concept to express that we should all feel comfortable in our bodies and in the way that we naturally are, and I truly believe this. But from another point, it can be a toxic mentality. Sometimes it seems like we use this concept too freely, and without boundaries. We are beautiful, but there is room for growth. Rather, we are beautiful, and there is room for growth. Why can’t growth go hand-in-hand with beauty? Why must we be perfect just the way we are? What’s wrong with change… Good change? When we have this subconscious expectation of ourselves to be perfect, failure, making mistakes, and taking responsibility become more challenging. With such a mentality we subconsciously see ourselves as incapable of needing improvement, and that is simply not reality. Beauty and perfection are different. Choose to improve on the beauty that is already there. You can always grow, you can always be better and seek better. But don’t seek perfection. Seeking perfection is seeking the impossible.

I found the most incredible second hand bookstore in Sydney today. Three floors of fiction, poetry, nonfiction and even sheet music! I could’ve spent hours there
It was called Sappho Books, Cafe and Bar if anyone is interested :)
