Species Profile: le'Mestrei's Cat

The sharowy le’Mestrei’s Cat (Umbraculmus le’Mestrei) is a very large carnivore living in the Abyss. This probable relative of terrestrial cats is known for two things - their numerous prides of up to 60 females and up to 6 males and the fact that Brvas breed in their fur.

While strong hunters, these cats aren’t teritorial - their prides sometimes mingle, live together for some time and then move on. Their gregarious behaviour is actually more akin to domestic cats than lions they resemble. While the Abyss changes animals in many ways genetic research implies these animals are either descendants of Eurasian Lynx or the Caracal… it is also possible the Umbraculmus genus is literally chimeric of the two mentioned species, it wouldn’t be the strangest thing the Abyss has brought.

These are also the only known predator of the Umbradelphis, the highly intelligent shadowy dolphin species confirmed to be a chimera of a Beluga and Russian Sturgeon of all things. Both fall prey to the Angallah though…

I will redraw this animal when I get the chance, I really like them. On another note - Hanz le’Mestrei was a Furiosa who lived on Earth during and after WW2 and he described this animal, at the time his publication was seen as a prank. The existence of the Abyss was not widely accepted by the scientific community until after the Mass Coma period of history when humanity slept through the worst of climate change.

when I was a kid I had an old tv in my room that would always turn to unwatchable static in the middle of shows but one night my sister and I were watching Naruto & every time Kakashi was on-screen the static cleared so we were like “hahaha the tv looooves Kakashi.”

I had a Kakashi bookmark so we held it up against the screen as a joke but the static actually cleared up. Mystified, we tried different bookmarks and objects with the same plastic material but nothing else worked, only the Kakashi bookmark.

We ended up taping it to the corner of the screen and it stayed there for 11 years until we moved out. When I was older people would be like “can you move the bookmark off the screen” bc it did sort of block a bit of the view but I would demonstrate the static issue and everyone was always just like “huh. what the hell?? well…alright.”

No explanation, but thanks Kakashi.

I had a similar tv! It was a tv with a built in dvd and vcr because it was in college and I’m apparently old now. But! The dvd player never wanted to play- unless it was Chicago (2002). First, we would put that dvd in, let it start, and then swap it for the movie we really wanted to watch. It got to the point where we would put in the dvd we wanted and sing “he had it coming!!!” At the screen at volume. Fucking worked *every time*

Interesting that both go beyond the original parameter of "promote all pawns" and also avoided capturing any of the promoted queens or the original queen, thus also making the maximum number of possible Queens on the board (18 Queens!). I suspect it would be possible to shorten the number of moves a little if you allowed Queens (whether original or promoted) to be captured. It's also funny in that White and Black kept alternating between having forced mate sequences

We've seen a 50 Move game somewhere else in the reblogs, but I've tried thinking about the problem.

Each pawn promotes in 5 moves (e4, 5, 6, 7, 8) multiplied by 8 pawns for 40 moves. You also need moves to get all 8 black pawns around the 8 white pawns and vice versa, be that pawn takes Knight, or Trans Queen moves off backrank to make room. That doesn't strictly add to the existing 40 moves, since each pawn will progress forward up the board as it takes, but you'll need several of those rooks/bishops/knights to be routed to the center of the board to create opportunities to capture. Definitely at least 4 of them.

Plus moves to either get all the queens off Bankrank, or shuffle King over to safety. Minimum 2 moves no matter how you slice it, additive since it neither advances a pawn nor routes a pawn capture.

I'm being extremely generous with my estimates for how many routing moves you'd need, but at absolute maximum you could cut the record down to 46 moves. More plausibly, I think the cap is 48 but I have an exam and can't study the 64 squares for the next week to prove it.
