How’s your STD?
Currently trying to learn more about phonetics to help me in conveying my thoughts more smoothly. I hope to one day speak with a native English speaker without seeing some of the folds on their forehead trying to understand what I am saying. Haha. I am not offended when it happens (don’t get me wrong) because I am pretty sure they try to make sense of what they hear from me (us, non-native speakers). With a pretty good IELTS score (not to brag) I wonder how difficult it is for them when they deal with the ones who barely get even half of IELTS score banding.
For example, we had a good discussion about how we usually respond to the question: “How was your day?” I told my workmates to answer back with “SSDD”, which stands for – Same S**t Different Day. Apparently my workmate, who was originally from the UK, did hear it as: “How’s your S.T.D.?” We all laughed when she told us what she heard.
