Sarah looks at Jessica over her tea cup. There is a pile of four thick books sitting on the chair next to her and Jess knows that the trip into town wasn’t exactly to just pick those up, but Sarah thinks their meeting was long over due anyway. 

“You know, I’m only good at giving advice because I don’t follow my own. Lots of wisdom to share.” she admits, setting the cup back down. "So tell me, what's on your mind?"

“I might take you up on that offer if Bess gives me a break from all the crying. She’s awake all night anyway, might as well keep you up as well if you’re up for some nasty dark circles in the morning.”

Sam is staring intently at the empty white squares of the crossword puzzle when she startles him. He barely moves from his spot, but the leather squeaks slightly when he unintentionally sits straighter on the chair. “Yes, well, just catching up with what’s going on in the world, you know.” he says before closing the newspaper and folding it in half. He supposes he can think about that nine-letter word for ‘unscrupulous person’ later. 

“Yes, sure. Please sit. Would you care for a beverage?”

Max is standing at the door with his arms open ready to ‘bear-hug’ Jess and while he maintains his ridiculously goofy pose, he adds a frown and a chuckle. “No! I’ve included you in my plans, silly! What mood are we in? frowny, downer, stare-at-the-ceiling or feels-like-the-world-might-be-ending-tomorrow? I need to know so I can adjust”

He has been dreading that question all along. It's not uncommon that he gets asked that, given the world and circumstances they live in, so he understands the uncertainty — but it's also not common for the answer to be 'no'. Sam takes his role very seriously, (maybe too seriously), everyone knows that, but they also trust him because of how he is and how he seems to think of any possible scenario and anticipate them. This time it's different. The answer is no, but he doesn't say it immediately. Instead, he takes a deep breath as if he's been deprived of air for days. His chest heaves, he straightens his shoulders and opens his mouth, but nothing comes out. He clears his throat. She knows. "No." he admits at last "And I know what you're thinking, but I have considered the risks and I'm okay with being the one taking them."

“You know, you’re not supposed to have your guests cook for you, it’s the other way around, haven’t you heard?” She whines, scurrying after Jess the moment the girl gets up. “You’re supposed to drink wine and compliment my awful cooking skills, and comment on the almost dead plant in the corner that I forgot to water for weeks.” does she sound stressed? because she is, maybe she’s the one that needs the wine.

Maybe Max is too nonchalant when it comes to dangerous situations, or his own safety for that matter, even though he’d rather keep his ass safe under all circumstances. He’s usually the thinker and not the one diving into things head-first -- that’s more his sister’s baggage, which he absolutely hates. So he gets it now, after it’s done and after he’s still okay and out of harm’s way, but he understands where she's coming from. 

“hey, hey, I’m okay. These are just scratches, I’m safe now, I knew what I was getting into. I’m thankful you’re worried about me, but this kind of feels deeper, and I’m picking up something different. do you want to talk about it?”

"Aaaaabsolutely everyone in the world, you say, as if that doesn't sound absolutely witchy. But," he says, stopping purely for dramatic effect while raising a finger "I am tempted to say no just so I can be the exception and therefore special, but, fine, I'll allow you to prove yourself so, let me taste that worldly wonder of yours"

“It’s not you she doesn’t trust.”

Prim speaking up next to Katniss caused a flash of pain to show in the older Everdeen’s eyes. Prim wasn’t as heavy a sleeper as she hoped. Though, Katniss pondered, she hadn’t been gone from her sister for long. Her tone turned accusatory as she looked to Prim, noticing that Prim brought with her Katniss’ overcoat which hid her bow and arrows. “You were already dressed and waiting. I should have never told either of you anything.” Not that it would stop them from figuring out something was wrong with her. Prim knew Katniss the best, and Bucky really wasn’t too far behind in that regard.

“I said what the plan was yesterday. Get into 13 by supply ship, go up into the Wilderness and over to 12. Even that’s going to be difficult because the Capitol has everything at their disposal. Peacekeepers; mutts; I wouldn’t put it past Snow to bring back Jabberjays either so he can listen in on conversations again. The entire country is under his heel. We try and have any more of a plan than the absolute basics? Things will not go our way.” There were some precautions they could try, though the certainty of them was slim. “Prim and I can’t risk talking aloud, not even in the Wilderness. Our voices will be recognizable and if we’re overheard by anyone or anything, we won’t make it past the hour. You might be able to get away with talking, Bucky, but don’t mention any names. And if you’re not sure you should say something, it’s best to just stay quiet.”

The frown that settled on Katniss’ face when Prim stuck the bow, arrows, and coat in the backseat before buckling herself into the driver side of her once again running vehicle didn’t have much reason to disappear once Prim spoke up again. " You can go with Bucky on the motorcycle. I need time to stop being upset that you were going to leave all of your protection behind.” Katniss’ eyes shifted down toward the ground at that. Getting guilt tripped from all directions so early in the morning was rough. She only wanted to give a proper goodbye to her past. Try to move on somehow. Get better somehow. Maybe going back was the wrong thing but how would she know that if she didn’t at least try? Prim was right, though. Planning to leave her bow and arrows, her sister, and Bucky behind was as bad an idea as it was understandable. She’d be far less noticeable without them but more at risk just the same.

“I can take a taxi if you need some time, too.” It’s what she was going to do anyway. It seemed to be the only part of her morning that didn’t change.

Bucky kept his mouth shut, wondering if there was anything more that Primrose needed to add to her statement. There wasn’t. And by doing so, he knew it had to sting more, because she was right and Katniss knew that, so it had to hurt more, seeing her sister hurt by her attempt to protect her. It was the wrong way to go about it, but he supposes it’s not his place to tell her that.

“Sneak in, remain invisible and not say a word. Sounds like something I’ve done before, shouldn’t be a problem.” he conveys, matter of fact, he is, quite literally, the perfect candidate for that mission. If anything, she just described ninety percent of his personality and general behaviour.

Bucky was already sitting on his motorbike when Primrose left by herself, not wanting anyone with her for the duration of the drive. Understandable, he supposes. He is not familiar with how their lives were in Panem or with half of the things they had to endure to get out, but he can understand Prim not wanting Katniss to go back, because Bucky doesn’t want to either. He understands that Primrose cares for her sister and fears that she gets hurt because he does so too and that’s exactly why they’re both there: because of Katniss but mainly for Katniss,

“It might come a day when you don’t ask stupid questions, Kat, but today isn’t the day, it seems. If you’re done realising my feelings don’t get hurt that easily, then hop on the damn bike and lead the way.”

“Would have been for my dumbass before I knew about any of this. At least you got some entertainment past the cringing of me laying awake all night worrying someone in my dorm would spontaneously become possessed and come to kill us the night after watching it. Probably should also take this moment to apologize for Halloween being my favorite holiday back then and trying to force you to participate. ”

“Maybe you’ll have to become a camp counselor. Tailor the stories to make sure the kids stay in their cabins after lights out. You’d be a favorite around the campfire.”

She chuckled at the idea of being threatened over vegetarian bacon of all things. “Guess he’s the meat and potatoes type? I’m glad you guys have a place, though and not always out eating whatever you can find along the way.” It was nice when he dropped some stories that sounded like they were out of anyone’s normal life… that through all the darkness he had found some happy moments in the last near decade. 

“I wouldn’t mind having the stray come visit me. Though shedding might be a little bit of an issue. He’s a little shaggy.” She teased, though she really felt more at ease when he was around. Not exactly the best thing to admit, when she was trying to prove to herself that she was strong enough not only to keep hunting but help fight what she barely understood was going on around them. As he scooped her right off the ground, she moved her arm around his neck to be a little more comfortable as some pain rippled through her abdomen from the change in position. “Alright doctor, if you insist. I’ll need a more detailed plan of what I’m allowed to do by tomorrow, though.” She found it humorous, considering she had planned on being a doctor herself before the whole getting murdered thing. 

Once back on her feet, she hoped that she at least could pull her shirt on and off because it would prove to be a problem if she couldn’t get dressed and undressed on her own for any amount of time. She had money to make to keep her room and plenty more research to do.  Gripping the bottom hem of her shirt, she had it pulled up nearly to her collarbone before pain radiated from her stomach and she groaned in pain. Taking a deep breath, she tried to reach back to yank from her shoulders, but that made the pain worse from the stretch. “… Yeah… I’m going to need your help. But you don’t have to be a gentleman about it.”

"If I were to guess, I’d say Halloween is still·your favorite holiday, which says a lot when you were scared of monsters in movies but then wanted to treat or treat around people dressed up as monsters. Help me understand your mind, miss Moore.” he conveys with the most serious face he can muster despite the hint of confusion he purposefully allows her to spot as well. He’s being more rhetorical than anything, he just thinks it’s amusing now just as he thinks it was back then.·

“No need to apologize though. I’m sorry monsters were kind of ruined for you now that you know what’s out there. You didn’t ask for the update, but I’lll give you one just the same and let you know I’m still not a holiday kind of guy.”

He has to agree with her on the good that came out of him and his brother having a place of their own now. Sam is sure that Dean loved sleeping in the Impala, and all of the countless hours (and coins wasted) on the magic fingers, but Dean was also the first one to call the bunker home. If Sam needs to be truthful, it took him quite a while to want it to be a home or even admit to it as such.·“He’s hamburger-donut kind of guy.” He concludes, resting his case.

He glossed over her next comments, choosing to busy himself with moving a certain way to avoid hurting her but also to distract himself·“Well, first of all, no hunting for at least a few days. No matter how good you might be, your movements are limited and you can’t have that if you’re fighting.” He motions for Jess to lower her arms and reaches for the half-pulled shirt to gently allow her head to pass through it first and then the arms.·“Promise me you’ll be on research duty for a bit, please.”·

As much as Peggy didn’t believe it possible, she was glad of the chance to stay home. Granted, she’d been staying home for weeks and was beginning to get restless but she tried to focus on the positives. More time to… oh, who was she kidding? She missed having something more important to work on. She did like taking care of her house, making it feel like a home in this place which began to grow on her only to rip the rug right out from under her feet, but the need to solve what she couldn’t was so much stronger. The tell-tale knock she’d gotten used to sounded at just the right moment that she had to wonder if there was something more to Sam forgetting his life again. She’d at least eased up on the whole, “you need to call before showing up,” rule she used to have. Of course, it was only Sam she eased up on. Everyone else still had to abide. Opening the door revealed the same Sam that showed up a few weeks prior, no awareness of anything beyond her name and she greeted him with a close lipped smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

“I’m not sure what use I can be. I doubt your superiors would approve of you bringing this to me instead of one of your colleagues but I can’t very well turn you away, now, can I? Showing up at my door looking like a lost pup. You’re very unfair sometimes, Sam Winchester.” Two could play at this so-called game. Something would help him remember and she was determined to figure out what that something was. If the person or thing behind all this didn’t like it, they knew where Peggy lived.

He chuckles at her description of him because he feels that it’s accurate. He has been knocking on her door one too many times for the past two weeks, but in his defence, it’s always for a good reason. 

Sam doesn’t correct her when she calls him by a different surname and deems it a simple freudian slip before he continues. “I think my superiors would be much more worried about their new detective possibly following the ‘insubordinate’ line of his predecessor. Not my words.

But, after two weeks I have concluded that you left quite an impression on the entire station, Margaret. And apparently, on me too. So, can I?” he inquires while gesturing towards the house, while actually already slipping past her cheekily. 

“I came across a file for a case that you worked on -- or were working on, because there’s nothing indicating that you closed it. And I don’t know why, but I have a feeling you’re not the type to leave things half-done.” he lets out a sigh. there is something there, he knows it, but everyone acts as if there’s nothing for him to poke at. 

“I’ve been in this town for two weeks and so far, it’s been kittens in trees and a couple transgressions. But when I look into who’s shoes I’m filling in, just because, I find files in dusty boxes that should have been forwarded to me, reported events that sound all but normal. Call me crazy, but in a town when nothing ever happens, a file with that many reports and a list of missing people attached to it, draws my attention. So, That’s what I’m here about.”

Sam opens the file and lays it down on the wooden table then “You started investigating this, one year ago and I’m guessing you thought there was something more to it. Your last report was five weeks ago, but then the kid from the coffee shop told me that four weeks ago something weird happened again, near the hills. I looked into the data base, but no reports were filled that night, so I was wondering if the kid from the coffee shop might be watching one too many movies or if you heard of anything weird that should have been added to your file.”
