anyway. that scene is still so fucking vile. i disagree that it was out of character for armand and think it makes sense that he is so bent on positioning himself as louis’s victim (lol) but this character beat no longer works because the narrative is on armand’s side and the narrative is even more invested in shaming and brutalizing louis

I think you're right that it's at least partially a reference to dreamstat's pocket inscription thing. It feels like another cruel callback to punish Louis; in s2 he imagines his partner romantically telling him that he had Louis' initials inscribed on his pocket so that Louis' name would always cradle his heart. In s3 the said partner vehemently denies that he'd ever do that and acts like it's an offense. Instead Louis has another partner to carve his initial over Louis heart in the most violent and dehumanizing way, brand him like he's a slave. It seems that the script didn't indicate why Armand as a character did that and the actors' are clearly struggling to explain his motives. Louis' reaction to it apparently also isn't indicated because the show isn't interested in Louis interiority anymore. Ultimately the main reason why it happened is that the writers wanted to brutalize Louis as much they could
