US ban on importation of Crab Meat from the Philippines resulted in laying off of 245 in Cebu, entire Crab Industry threatened
The United States National Marine Fisheries Service (USNMFS) recently restricted Importation of the Philippine Blue Swimming Crab due to what it claims as "Insufficient Documentation regarding Mandatory Marine Mammal Protection and bycatch Monitoring Measures".
As a Direct result, one of the Companies in Cebu exporting the Crab to the United States (US) laid off 245 of their Workers due to the loss of the Market. The Philippine Association of Crab Processors Incorporated (PACPI) is now warning that the entire Crab Meat Industry worth Usd 50 million could be lost due to this.
They are now calling for the responsible Philippine Government Agencies to fix the identified Regulatory Deficiencies that the USNMFS has already highlighted. They said that the Philippines shipped 2,400 metric tons of Crab Meat to the US last Year of 2025, and that the US Market account for 90% of all Philippine Crab Exports.
