Rowan Syed-Tollan

Windows in the west is a painting by Avril Paton. At first glance, we see a large building homing many people. However, one will only need to observe this painting for only a few minutes to notice a blatant depiction of individuality. While at first glance the house is the centre of attention, the closer we look, the smaller the building feels. Each window in the building reads a different story, shows a different lifestyle and displays very different personalities. The contrast between the window in the bottom middle section compared to one in the top right-hand side is quite drastic, in the bottom middle we see children playing in their living room, this is a rather energetic scene, however when we observe the room second to the top right we have completely opposing energy, we are a young lady at her desk, most likely working or on her computer. We can observe the drastic change of energy throughout the entire painting. To me, is an incredible depiction of people living their own separate lives while all in the same vicinity, how people can all have identical living conditions but live drastically different lives.
