What do you have to say about pedophilic content in fandom spaces?/genq
I feel that it can be genuinely harmful, and depending on the severity can literally be child porn. Would this not be an example of when sensorship is protecting?/genq
(this is not hate, js want your thoughts)
I have already answered this question a million times before, respectfully. so my answer probably wonβt be as detailed as the other times Iβve answered it, but a rough summary of what I have already said so many times on this blog.
firstly, no, it cannot be cp if the βchildβ is a fictional character. itβs dark fantasy. itβs someoneβs imagination. it is NOT REAL.
moving on to how I feel about such content, anything with characters who are minors in a sexual manner is not my thing. so personally I donβt engage with it if I ever come across it. but people can do whatever they want forever as long as itβs fiction and no one in real life is harmed. thoughtcrimes are not real. so I will just mind my own business.
people write about taboo things for so many reasons. some of them are victims and survivors who cope and heal through dark fiction. but even if some of them write it as a kink, thereβs still nothing wrong with that as long as they use fiction as a way to satisfy their needs, so that they wonβt go out there and actually hurt real people.
no, censorship will never βprotectβ anything. if you believe censorship can ever be good, then youβve fallen for fascist propaganda. because the thing about censorship is that itβs all or nothing. either everything that is not of conservative value is censored or nothing is censored.
anti censorship means nothing is censored. even if itβs something I personally find extremely disgusting.
you cannot have βa little censorshipβ and expect it to stop at that one thing you personally hate and find harmful. because every other thing is hated and considered harmful by some people too. there are people who say the portrayal of queer love in media should be censored because βitβs harmfulβ.
so if we allow and normalize censorship. it will not stop at just one thing.
you have the responsibility to curate your internet experience. if you donβt like something, you have the rights to block, mute or ignore those things. but you do NOT have the rights to control other people and tell them what they can or canβt create/consume.
if someone lets fiction affect their reality enough to the point they think bad things in fiction are okay in real life because theyβre portrayed as such in fanfics, then chances are that with or without the fiction they consume, theyβre already troubled and they need help. but fanfic writers are not their parents. we are not their parents.
itβs not our responsibility to censor ourselves for them or for the sake of anybodyβs personal comfort.
curate your own internet experience. you (general you) are not morally superior by harassing real people over fictional characters. youβre just a bully who wants to justify harassment.
