Sonya Barkley-Kumashiro
Sonya Barkley-Kumashiro is a half Black, half Japanese young woman, who started as a student from the Support Course at UA high, only to become one of Japanâs most influential Pro Heroes. She has deep mocha skin, bright hazel, almond shaped eyes, with long dark lashes and plump lips. She also has a head full of thick, dark brown(shade 2) coils that stop at her collarbone, though she usually wears a high ponytail. She stands at about 5 '3, blessed with a pear shaped figure, C-cup bust, a toned midsection accentuated with subtle abs, strong thighs that touch, wide hips and a generous backside.
Sonya has a blended quirk called Brains and Brawns, having inherited the Brains aspect from her father, and the Brawns from her mother, who she is a splitting image of, aside from her eyes(Those are her fatherâs). This quirk allows her to use Brawns to increase her strength, endurance, agility or other physical attributes, though in exchange it results in a decrease in her intellect. The opposing end of her abilities is that she can increase her already impressive observational prowess, problem solving skills, adaptability under pressure, etc, but that will affect her physicality. If she overuses her Brains, it can result in vertigo, mild disorientation and headaches, which can gradually turn into intense migraines, possibly losing consciousness and even neurological impairment. If she were to overuse Brawns however, it could cause a mild tensing or sharp spasms in her joints and muscles, and eventually lead to cramping, temporary paralysis or permanent nerve damage. She can use both abilities at the same time, a dual surge as she calls it, however it is extremely difficult to maintain, and can result in simultaneously experiencing drawbacks from both aspects. When initially enrolling into U.A, at 15 years old, she could only use both quirks for about 60 seconds, but by 24 years old, while having 5 years of experience as a hero, her limit reached 150 seconds.
Sonya is known as The Major League Hero: Strikeout, her name inspired by the physical and mental expertise it takes to be a Pro Athlete as well as a Pro Hero, making a parallel between the two occupations. She utilizes a light but dense metal baseball bat, adorned with black and red graphics, and various baseballs engineered to react differently when she hits them. Her collection includes smokeballs, flashballs, shockballs, fragballs and normal baseballs, as well as balls with trackers in them, all created by her, and made out of the same metal as her bat. This makes it easy for her to toss and strike, while still packing a punch. Her hero costume is a baseball uniform that she altered herself. The jersey is white with red stripes, having a large pair of black zeros(â00â), with an âxâ crossing them out, on the back, and a matching but smaller motif on the left breast of the jersey. She wears it open, revealing a form fitting, cropped, high collar shirt with three quarter sleeves underneath. For bottoms, she wears a pair of high waisted baseball bottoms that came along with the jersey, a black utility belt around her waist that contains her arsenal of balls, and a sling across her back to hold her bat when she isnât using it. For other accessories, she wears knee high red socks, a pair of black, red and white steel toed cleats, elbow and knee pads made out of a thick cushion material to protect her, when sliding and such. Like other heroes, Sonya does have her own agency, however that isnât the only thing attached to her name. At an early point in her hero career, she used her earnings to build a recreational center in her own neighborhood, curating a safe space for children and young adults of all ages and backgrounds. There are programs and activities in place, specifically meant for those with and without quirks to find happiness, self worth, ways to cope, and comfort in sports and the arts, activities that she herself enjoyed as a child, and still does as an adult.
Sonya is very popular amongst the public as a hero, most likely due to how approachable she is overall. She typically maintains a relatively chill demeanor, so much so that it makes it difficult for others to register when itâs become self-destructive. She tends to have this mindset of âit is what it isâ finding that when inconvenienced, she wonât allow herself to actually feel upset about it. She instead laughs it off or makes lighthearted jabs at her situation, before pushing it into the back of her mind where it remains, until she unfortunately ends up snapping. The Major League hero tries her damnedest to keep it from happening, and not to take it out on her friends, colleagues and family, choosing instead to suffer in silence. She refuses to ask for help, out of fear or being a burden and appearing weak, her image of strength a reflection of her own mother, but when others are suffering, itâs an entirely different story. She does not tolerate bullying or disrespect towards another person, and will always stand for whatâs right, no matter the stakes, hence why sheâs on the hero track in the first place. Sheâs fairly open minded towards most people, and is always willing to see the best in others despite how they might initially present themselves, the woman knowing better than anyone that your outside might not always reflect your inside. She understands that though people may seem so, theyâre not always good through and through, and that the world isnât so black and white. Itâs why even when sheâs actively burying her own fears, she tries to be perspective of what others might be, Sonya forward in expressing when she wants to and her attempts of getting to know people, but also understanding when itâs in her best interest to back off, or give them the space to come to her.
Sonyaâs interests are a blend of physical activities and the arts, including things like reading, watching anime, gaming, horror, roller skating, arts and crafts, engineering, baseball, basketball and most importantly music, which she utilizes to keep track of her dual surges time limit. The genres she gravitates to in music can vary depending on her mood, the young woman having a very eclectic taste that can range from hip hop to metal to classical. The same could be said about what she reads, watches and plays, the genres rotating between sci-fi to dark romance to so much more, not being bound by one preference. Sonya also greatly enjoys thrifting, that being how she discovers a lot of the items she uses for her crafts and developing her tech. It isnât all she looks for however, the Major League hero often drawn towards the vintage shoes and clothing, the woman a self named sneaker head, and fashion being a primary way she expresses herself. The style of clothing that she usually rocks is a blend of athletic and streetwear, her wardrobe dominated by form fitting crop tops, biker shorts, leggings, as well as baggy jackets, hoodies, tees, and jeans. Sonya also sports three piercings in each ear, one in each lobe, and two at the curve of the shell, adding to her self expression.
A/N: Welp, thatâs Sonya, but it isnât all the insight youâll get into her life. She has a very large and complex blended family, who you all will be hearing about very shortly. Look out for my next post, where weâll be discussing Sonyaâs mother, Maxine Barkley
