it’s heavy, that josey. it has weight, gravity. it drops into josey’s lap like a boulder, just as hard and unable to be ignored. leaned against a table, kerry stares at him with a disappointment he doesn’t want to have to show, and it looks as inauthentic and put-upon as it feels, made all the worse by josey’s heart-felt apology. it’s the look of someone who would say this hurts me more than it hurts you and truly mean it.
“it’s raw. room temperature. meat. in a bag.” each word has emphasis, and just as much gravity. he feels responsible to make sure his golden retriever friend understands. “it’s a real fucked up thing to see if you aren’t expectin’ it. you can, like, understand that, right?” he knows he doesn’t. he asks anyway.
“ yeah. yeah, of course i understand ! ” he doesn’t. not at all. josey blinks blankly there’s not much behind those eyes, except the anxiety + excitement of a show. but still, it feels like he’s a pinch in trouble. it feels like when his mom would walk into his room with her hands on her hips and everything. it feels inappropriate to do so, but reading the room has never really been his strongest suit : ziplock opens with that very specific ‘ pop, ’ and fingers reach for a little cube of mutton. as a treat. “ i’ll keep track of my snacks better. i promise, bro, ” like he’s learned from his mistakes, like he won’t immediately forget about his stupid bags of meat and leave it in some inconvenient place again. the two should be used to this by now. he pops one in his mouth, like it’s an everyday cheez - it or something. he lifts three bloody fingers up, touching his pinky to his thumb : “ scouts honor, dude. ”
