Fuck NaNoWriMo
It's always been a shit way to write a book. Slamming through fifty thousand words in a month leads to burnout and a garbage draft you'll spend more time unfucking than if you'd actually just paced yourself.
I'm proposing Novel Outline November
Start with your idea on November 1st.
Write something for your novel every day. The only unacceptable amount is 0.
Attempt to complete the plot in 50K words. Stick with that as a limiting factor so you focus on what's most important to your story.
When it's done it's done! Everyone is a winner!
You will
Develop good writing habits
Challenge yourself to write long form
Create a base that can be expanded into commercial fiction (70-100K) or genre fiction (100-110K)
Happy writing!
Listen to your Gay Wizard Pal™ when it comes to writing.
Develop GOOD writing habits that don't require you to burn yourself out trying to do 50k in a month. In a good month, sometimes I could only hit 7500 words because writing is a PROCESS and it is different for everyone!
Trying to pigeonhole yourself to write 50k in a month because folks like BrandoSando can just isn't sustainable.
As stated in the OP, the only unacceptable amount of words to write per day is ZERO. Even if you right just ONE WORD, you did it!
Now that we've had time to do math: we ended the month at $49.4K gross, and 1% of our net profits - once we pay for manufacturing, payroll, travel and booth costs for Seattle Pride, taxes, and so on - comes out to just under $188.
Since $198 is 11 x chai, we decided to go with that. :)
Did we hit our goal? No. Did we have our best Pride Month to date? Yes. Do we really believe in what @queerliblib does? Yeah. We do.
There's new stuff coming from us soon - new dresses, new patterns (did someone say pawprints? Crows?), new pins and keychains - but that can wait for another post. :)
For now, come see us next weekend at Pride Northwest in Portland! We're hoping our skirt & shirt restock comes in, but we will definitely have some skirts and shirts in stock and sample skirts to try on so you can know your NerdyKeppie Dress & Skirt Size for sure.
We'll be right by the entrance off of Harvey Milk. :)
Thanks again to the folx at the Queer Liberation Library for everything they do!
Tell me you know nothing about history without telling me you know nothing about history
I legitimately wrote a 15 page paper on this during my undergrad, almost 20 years ago. So the folks complaining that they made Alexander of Macedon gay because of "woke" are super barking up the wrong tree.
Even before the modern LGBT 💿🐴 zeitgeist, there were scholars who wrote on Alexander and Hephaestion going back DECADES even before I was born (and I am close to 40 than I am to 20).
Hell, I hadn't even studied Alexander that much in depth prior to this particular course but even I - the burgeoning queer that I was - had some like UPG (unverified personal gnosis) that this dude was queer AF, so like.
Sorry straight dude who had to learn that their Greek conquering hero upon whom they have based their entire mid-level sense of self-identity was a Greek conquering twink disaster bisexual of the highest order.
Do you remember Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda?
Yes and I liked it
Yes and I'm neutral on it
Yes and I didn't like it
Kinda
No
I'm bald/see results
I'm asking this to see if it's worthwhile working on a fan TTRPG for the setting.
Best part of Andromeda was Lexa Doig, who went on to marry Michael Shanks (Dr. Daniel Jackson in SG-1). I love it when sci-fi series folks find love.
We do not speak of He Who Shall Not Be Named

Okay, y'all.
I'm gonna be really up front with everybody in a way that I'm usually not:
This year so far has been really rough, in a way that kinda has me worried. Bear with me, and there will be dog pictures along the way and pictures of new swag at the end, ok?
Running a small business is always rough, and with everything going on - with me being down-and-out struggling to get my hysterectomy approved, with everything going on financially & politically, with Jake moving out here - we knew that this year probably wouldn't be a banner year, but...
... when I pulled reports at the end of May, I was kinda shocked and gutted because at the start of June, we were actually down a considerable amount year over year. I knew the year wouldn't be great, but like, oof.
Pride is usually where we make our money for the year - we call it "gay Christmas," because where other retailers count on their holiday season, we count on Pride to make sure that our employees get paid during January of the following year.
Pause for Ser Davos Seawoof:
This Pride has started ... slowly. Not terribly, but a little more slowly than I'm comfortable with, and slowly enough that I'm nervous. We invested a lot of money in new stock and equipment, and that's got to pay off. Right?
So here's the pitch:
We need to make at least $60K in sales this month to make sure that we're in good shape for the upcoming year. We are currently at $8100, and we have a two-day event coming up in Seattle at the end of the month, but that still gives us an awful lot of ground to make up.
If we hit our sales goal for this month, NerdyKeppie will donate 1% of our net profit for June to @queerliblib.
Just hitting that goal would both make it possible for us to know we can make it through the year & even if we have the worst profit margins this month, it'd be a minimum $250 donation.
We just added Express delivery as a shipping upgrade on most of our t-shirts (limited color and size options on that, which isn't under our control) so if you need something quick, we've got you, and everything from our Portland HQ collection ships usually within 2 business days.
Everything which ships from Portland? A mood.
Everything in our Bottoms & Tops collection is Buy 2, Get a 3rd 69% off with code TOP2BOTTOM until midnight tonight:
IT'S BACK! Our infamous Bottoms & Tops sale is back on for Pride 2024! Use discount code TOP2BOTTOM for Buy Two, Get One 69% Off on the
And as always, NerdyKeppie is 100% trans-owned and queer-run. We start all of our employees at a minimum of $25/hr, and all eligible employees are IWW members. We have no investors, and we have no shareholders to please. Big box corporations screw over small artists and drop Pride the minute it gets hard or controversial, but this is our life.
We're here for the long run. Help us stay and help us build resources for today & tomorrow, and get some cool-ass swag while you do.

From Onyx Path - Get Ready for At The Gates
They Came from the Cyclops's Cave!
The first game I've ever pitched and developed is out!
They Came from the Cyclops's Cave! is a game of fantasy cinematic adventure. Part of the They Came From series by Onyx Path Publishing, Cyclops's Cave is completely standalone, an awesome game covering fantasy in all its shapes.
Each They Came From is a love letter to a given movie/media genre zeitgeist, and I pitched Cyclops's Cave to be unique and do the whole fantasy genre. It allows to play from Harryhausen movies to The Lord of the Rings, passing through Xena, Ladyhawke, He-Man, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, The Black Cauldron, and Dragonheart.
Seriously, I can't overstate how much range this game has. Like, it *technically* covers TV shows and movies from the 40s to the 90s, but I am who I am, so you'll find nods to Adventure Time, Zelda, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and many more in here. Of course you will, this game's my baby, and I wanted it to commit to fantasy at its fullest.
Here you'll find:
- Tools to create your own heroes, be them warriors, gorgons, pixies, slimes, or mimics
- Cinematic powers that replicate movie beats.
- A vast collection of antagonists and creatures.
- Two ready-made scenarios.
...and much more!
Seriously, I love They Came From, how it combines comedy and devotion to media at the table through honest love. This baby of mine is the result of so much hard work, done by a team of awesome people who poured their love for the project into all pages.
Please consider checking it out! That would mean the world to me.
(Also: Cyclops's Cave is the foundation for the upcoming They Came From Witchford Academy!, its very cool upcoming Magical School supplement!)
At the Gates
If you've missed it until now, At the Gate is a high fantasy game inspired by media like final fantasy and books like the Ryiria Chronicles. We have an Ashcan of it live on DTRPG. Please use your dollars to check it out, which will help a girl get some eyeballs on her work! https://preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/475586/At-The-Gates-Ashcan-Edition?affiliate_id=245791
Okay nerds, if you like TTRPGs and JRPGs, please check out the ashcan (think of it as like a quick and dirty view) of my pal's game, "At the Gates".
I ain't got many followers, but every bit helps!

'Vamily Spotlight': WoD Brand Team is Taking Art Without Permission
Recently, I was informed by a friend that some work of mine had shown up in the World of Darkness’ official ‘Vamily Spotlight’ section of their latest video. In this they talk about the gameplay reveal of Bloodlines 2 and generally drum up hype for it, which is largely what you expect from company channels when they’ve a new product out.
There’s a problem with this: I was never informed, or asked. No consent was given to use that work, or any others.
Through some excellent efforts by friends I also found that my work was in two other videos, with the earliest being well over a year ago-- totalling three, and they were up on both Twitch and YouTube.
Now, you’ll note that I’m a professional artist with two separate art degrees and well over a decade and a half of training. I’ve also a basic understanding of copyright and fair use.
The Vamily Spotlights are little to do with the review and news section of the video and therefore do not really have bearing on the main point of the video. To this end, I’d assume they’re there as a draw to viewers, maybe to see if their or their friends’ work has turned up in these official videos. And nominally that’s a valid tactic for engagement, if you have permission to use these pieces of work.
They do not however have permission, and certainly not from me.
As of writing, (5th of February 2024) I’ve issued a DMCA request for all three of the videos my work shows up in on both Twitch and YouTube, and takedowns are pending but I would urge people in the WoD tag here on Tumblr to check the available videos for themselves, if they are as concerned as I am. The screenshots of art in the videos they use to spotlight seem to come from Tumblr, as well as whole TikTok videos and other social media posts. If this makes the rounds elsewhere, do check your stuff wherever you are, WoD fans.
As the videos are also present on the Twitch VOD platform, this means they are actively charging money using our work without permission. I am unsure if their YouTube channel is monetised. Notably, on their
If they use your work for their spotlights, they are making advertisements and revenue off of your work without any reimbursement or prior consent.
I don’t know if other artists were asked, but I definitely wasn’t, and by now we all know the issues with ‘exposure’ and how that does not keep artists fed or housed.
And Paradox Interactive, having artists, they should know that you do not take for free from any of us-- at any level of influence or professionalism. The WoD community is not a free for all for companies to pick and choose free art to use like a bowl of cute little multicoloured sweets, it’s a bunch of creative, inspired and crafty people who come together across any edition of the many worlds in the setting to create as is our fair right to do so. Without being taken for granted, and without being cynically harvested for ‘content’. How vampiric.
Additionally I would like to note that all of my World of Darkness fanworks are based on legacy books; Vampire 20th Anniversary Edition, Mage the Ascension 20th Anniversary Edition and Hunter: the Reckoning First Edition most often, though there are appearances from others. You’ll note that not one of these books is the territory of Paradox Interactive or their World of Darkness brand management team-- looks to me like they’ve simply trawled the tag without reading what they’re looking at, which means they certainly didn’t take the time to ask permission to use these works. Not only were these actions tantamount to theft, it was also not even their fanart to begin with. And once again, they’d have known this had they contacted me at all, which they did not. It’s a failure on their part on several levels and not only do I want the videos taken down, I think the community is sorely owed an apology for this frivolous theft of art under the banner of ‘community content’. I didn’t opt in to having my work taken, and it should not have been assumed that it was okay to take my work just because it’s using a tag they also use!
I want everyone to know I have had zero benefit from their use of my work-- no money, no notes and no dialogue. This does not help artists. This does not help the community.
I’m willing to talk about this should anyone want to ask, but this is a gross abuse of artists and creatives’ rights for the sole purpose of gain by the World of Darkness brand team, and I expected better. I know I personally deserve an apology for this at the very least, as well as the WoD team to commit to actually contacting artists and sourcing permission in future-- and to set up an opt-in or out system for whether people want to be featured. I know I don’t, and I never asked to be. My work’s lovely, and they’re right to have said so. But it’s not for Paradox, and it’s not for Outstar or any of the other Brand team.
It’s for me, and people here on Tumblr who like it.
I’m disappointed, in PDX and in the WoD Brand team, because they should know far better than this.
I'd say I'm surprised, but I'm not.
I mean, Vampire is all about powerful beings (read: corporations) who leech off of an unsuspecting humanity (read: artists, fans, creatives, writers, etc) and literally do not give two shits over who gets hurt so long as they get what they want out of it.

Okay writers listen up
I'm gonna tell you about how I wrangled my shitbird brain into being a terrifying word-churning engine and have written over 170K words in under a year.
I wanna be clear that before unlocking this Secret Technique I was a victim of my unmedicated ADHD, able to start but never finish, able to ideate but not commit and I truly and firmly believed that I'd never write a novel and such a thing was simply outside of my reach.
Now I write (and read!!) every day. Every. Single. Day. Like some kind of scriptorial One Punch Man.
Step the First
Remove friction between yourself and writing.
I personally figured out how to comfortably write on my phone which meant I didn't have to struggle with the insurmountable task of opening my laptop.
I don't care if this means you write in a Discord server you set up for yourself, but fucking do it. Literally whatever makes you write!
(if you do write somewhere that isn't a word processor PLEASE back your work up regularly!)
Step the Second
Make that shit a habit. Write every day.
For me, I allow myself the grace that ANY progress on writing counts. One sentence? Legal. Five thousand furious hyperfixated words? Also legal.
Every day, make progress. Any progress.
I deleted Twitter from my phone and did my best to replace doomscrolling with writing. If I caught myself idly scrolling I'd close whatever I was looking at and open my draft and write one (1) sentence until I made THAT a habit, too.
Step Two-point-Five
DO NOT REWRITE. If you are creating a first draft, don't back up or restart. Continous forward motion. Second drafts and editors exist. Firsts are for ripping the fucking thing out of your brain.
If you're working on revisions after an editor or beta readers or whoever has given you feedback, then you can rewrite that's OK (and it counts as your writing for the day!)
Step the Third
Now that you've found a comfortable way to write and are doing it every day, don't stop. Keep doing it. Remember, just one sentence is all you need. You can always do more, but if one lousy sentence is all you can manage then you're still successfully writing.
Remember: this is what worked for me. Try things until you find what works for you.
You can do it. I believe in you.
I'm so fucking normal. I'm so fucking normal. I'm so fucking normal. I promise I'm normal. Vincent Valentine dude.
And I'm 99% that's fucking Matt Mercer voicing him too. My fucking God I'm so normal about this. 🫠
I'm normal about everything EXCEPT the Matt Mercer part.
