Everything was ready by the time Wukong heard the key slide into the lock. He bit back giggles as the front door swung open, eager to see your expression at his latest surprise.
All day long, he had unleashed a barrage of endless pranks upon you. A blaring alarm startling you awake. Sugar switched out for salt. A raincloud in the shower. Fake bugs hidden in your shoes. It brought the trickster endless amusement and he accepted your vows to get even with a cheeky, challenging grin.
“Welcome home, Peaches!” Wukong called when you stepped through the doorway.
He watched you scan the empty room in confusion before looking up to all your furniture dangling from the ceiling. From the TV to the lamps to the coffee table, everything had been inverted and neatly arranged above you. And perched casually on the upside-down couch was Wukong, one leg folded over his knee and cheek resting against his hand.
“Like what I’ve done with the place?” the monkey asked innocently.
The longer he met your bewildered stare, the more his mirth built until it finally bubbled out of him in chittery cackles. He doubled over, nearly toppling himself to the ground, only to freeze mid-laugh when he heard a small sniffle.
Wukong’s looked down, all enjoyment snuffed out when he saw your crestfallen expression and wide, watery eyes.
“Aw, Peaches,” he murmured, suddenly regretting every prank he had pulled on you. “I didn’t mean–”
The question hit him like a physical blow and he felt his heart break further when tears started to trickle down your face. In a flash, he was off the ceiling and by your side, pulling you into a comforting hug.
“I’m sorry, Peaches! Please don’t cry!” Wukong cooed and shushed you while every quiet sob only added to his guilt. “I was trying to be silly but took it too far. If you want, you can play any prank on me so we’re even, okay?”
He almost collapsed in relief when you hugged him back and asked meekly, “You won’t get mad?”
“Of course not,” he chuckled, nuzzling your hair.
Wukong pulled back, cradling your face to dry your tears before stopping and squinting suspiciously. “What the…”
“Ah ah!” the Not-Peaches chastised in a familiar voice. “You promised not to get mad, brother!”
“BAJIE!” Wukong screeched, shoving the pig out of his embrace. “What is the meaning of this!?”
Meanwhile, the illusion had faded, leaving only Bajie rolling around on the ground and cackling hard enough to crack a rib. “Do you know how long I’ve been waiting to get you back with that trick!? And you fell for it!”
“The monkey seethed, more embarrassed than angry, as he glared as his brother. “How dare you impersonate Peaches just to get back at me.”
“A second round of laughter reached Wukong’s ears just before the door swung open to reveal the real Peaches. You were leaning against the frame, giggling with tears in your eyes when you met Wukong shocked expression.
“Told you I would get you back,” you said with a cheeky smile.
All the shame and irritation drained away at your amusement and Wukong could only chuckle sheepishly. “Yeah, I guess you did. Well played, Peaches.”
Bajie perked up with a quirked brow. “Hey, what about me?”
A red-eyed glare was thrown his way. “Don’t push it, pig,” Wukong growled.
“Yep, gotcha, loud and clear. I’m just gonna…” Jumping to his feet, Bajie ran out the door, barely pausing to give you a parting wave.
Once he was gone, Wukong finally relaxed with a weary sigh. Seeing him still frazzled, you wrapped your arms around his waist and snuggle against his chest.
“Don’t be mad at Bajie, I was the one who asked him for prank ideas. Turns out he’s had this one in mind for quite some time.”
Wukong huffed but hugged you back. “Guess we’re all lucky I didn’t welcome you home with a kiss.”
