It had already begun to melt, drizzling down in thick rivers tainted red. It reminded you of the river Gúgnar after the dark elves slaughtered the Vanir legions.
Why did you had the terrific feeling that this wasn’t meant to be a one-time phenomenon?
A soft tug on your skirt redirected your skittish attention, pale cheeks turning to meet Loki’s that looked like carved marble. He had that playful innocence that tasted so real and so painfully different to the recklessness of his haughty father.

Spinning on your heel and biting your lower lip in hope your shoes won’t screech on the marble floor, you faced her with a thousand urgent pleas in your eyes. Before your mouth could form a proper word, Gyda giggled and blushed as she shook her ebony curls. “I have sworn to not tell a soul. You shan't worry“.
Sighing, your hands wrapped around the white, spotless cloth ready to fulfill your duty so different to Gyda’s more privileged situation. However, she was your closest friend, loyal to the core since you smashed a dark elves head to keep it from killing her during the grand attack.
Loyalty seemed rare in these scarred times, making it even more tempting to take advantage of the opportunity that was her magic.

They were nearing the royal west wing, guard after guard dropping on the stone cold floor, gasping for their very last breath.
With an unintentional roughness, you hooked your fingers underneath the prince’s heavy torso trying hard to flip him over. “Loki, wake up! It’s urgent“ you begged once more, mouth twitching as you saw his forest green eyes flutter open.

“Loki, please. What will you do?“ You murmured, voice a mere plea to stay while your mind knew it was duty for him to intervene. He was incredibly intelligent, far beyond all those intrigues and mindless slaughter.
Wordlessly, he leaned down to you, soft lips pressing a chaste kiss on your forehead. It was a second to savor, to frame and hang in the biggest of all halls for everyone to see. Nevertheless, it only lasted a moment until the clattering noise of metal spears hitting the ground shook your bones again.
“Stay here. And when things get out of hand, flee“ he whispered, his broad back now facing you, a golden dagger emerging in his right hand. Your protector, you mused for a second, a dreamy try of your brain to suppress those heavy emotions of war and treason.
“But-“
Raven curls dropped from the lazy bun when Loki shook his head, silencing you with just a gesture as you were used to as a handmaiden. Only with him it never felt insulting or disrespectful.
It was all a fling, childish perhaps.
“No but, darling. If I signal you to run and hide in the farthest place from the palace, you will do so. Understood?“.
Screams and Odin’s sultry laughter invaded your silence that felt too painful to relish in anyway.

And then you were catapulted into a trance of stiffened limbs and attentive ears when Loki stormed outside, his potent yells after his father and brother twisting your stomach. If he didn’t succeed, only the Norns knew what would happen to Vanaheim. How much blood would be shed and how many innocent children would lose their parents.
Silence. Only distant voices and whimpers audible in the grand palace in which it smelled like lèse majesté and the tragic demise of a reconstruction that had just begun.
You wanted to vomit, the burden of your confirmed premonitions impossible to bear.
“Father, I urge you. Asgard doesn’t need you to raid Vanir mines as long as Alfheim delivers the platinum ore“ Loki’s calculated tone met your ears and let your hands clench hard around the mattress.
A deep growl of the Allfather was what followed.
A metallic thud, sounding like Mjölnir hitting the ground spread goosebumps on your naked arms. Begging that Gyda had reached the royal family before they did, you squeezed your eyes shut, rocking back and forth on the edge of Loki’s bed.
“Alas, they deliver too slowly for my liking“ Of course they weren’t. “Asgard needs to represent glory and strength so what’s sacrificing a realm that is curling up and whining like a maladroit child?“.
Pressing your palms against your belly you struggled to fight the stinging pain.
This was the final war declaration born from Odin’s hubris and withered humanity. A thing you were painfully familiar with since Malekith and the dark elves had wrecked your home. It felt like a shattered mirror image to now repeating motifs set to plunge Vanaheim into another historical ruin.

Your legs wanted to continue climbing, to run and look for her but your heart yearned to hear Odin’s response, a feeble torch of hope still flickering inside you. You stilled for a moment more, white fabric flowing in the wind whose screams nearly died it blood red.
“You pathetic excuse of a son“. Your face scrunched in disgust, knuckles loosing all their color around the balustrade. “But-“. “Nooo! I will have you disciplined as soon as this- this matter is concluded. Now shut your mouth and follow“.
Hot tears shot in your eyes, feeling like boiling water that burned your tender skin as they rolled down your cheeks. Mettlesome just like the resolve that was born in you that exact second.
King Freyr and queen Gildur were fated to die, to follow their daughter to Valhalla. But you were still breathing and as long as you did this realm should weigh heavy on the scales of justice.
Too scarred was your history to bow your head to violence and destruction another time.
This realm deserved the glory Yggdrasil had intended for the Vanir and someone was to bring it. Loki had tried, to his credit, but was crushed underneath his father’s dire indifference. Fling or not, deep down you were well aware of your position even though your heart would take a while to heal; alone far and wide.
Why not try it yourself when you had nothing too lose anyway?

“I wouldn’t have expected otherwise, my queen. The Allfather must assume this was but a foolish swindle since our kingdom has been shielded to Heimdall for the last two centuries” Gyda mused, holding her glass up for one lady in waiting to pour a fine wine.
You couldn’t help but allow a chuckle to run over your lips, Odin’s words and acts of betrayal in that one night replaying in your darkest memories. The ones that spurred you on and held you in chains at the same time; both a curse and a blessing.
“Oh, Gyda… The things I would’ve done to see the look on his old, pathetic face when he noticed this, our glory for the first time”.
Kronur shifted where he lay next to your platinum throne, scratchy hair of his tail sounding like blades against the silver metal. “Shhh” you soothed him, heart beginning to reawaken a thousand more memories as you whispered in his ear “We shall set out for Asgard at noon. Eventually, I will finish what I have started”.
Memories of someone long fallen out of Odin’s favor. Someone astute enough to have peeked behind the mask of a well hidden monster and praised wrecker of the nine realms.
The only capable prince of Asgard rotting in chains in the dark dungeons. Loki.
“But, with all due respect your grace, don’t you fear that a certain shared history with the prince could endanger our plan? The higher purpose of it all?” the high pitched voice nonchalantly reminded you of the gospel you’ve set for your very own grace and all of Vanaheim.
Gyda was tactful and always spoke with great deliberation however, it sounded harsh to the still gaping wounds of your heart.
The crown of your head did weigh heavier though.
“The past does only matter in one certain aspect that is Odin’s and Thor’s unforgivable deeds. I’m immune to the rest, Gyda” you reassured her, an unintentional bitterness weirdly intertwined with your tone. “That is most honorable but Loki has now a rather conflicted history of his own as you know, my queen. What if -“.
Biting your lip at the lupine tension that was brewing within your body and soul, you shot up, the act alone silencing everyone within the throne hall. Metallic thuds against marble floor accompanied Kronur's big claws scratching the white ground when he sat up, enormous in his dark demeanor.
Expectant eyes were lingering on you and you alone; a sensation you’ve gotten used to as their ash queen.
The thrill of seeing bright hope flickering in their damaged eyes was worth it; every decision and every piece of yourself you had sacrificed along the way. The Vanir were standing with their backs straighter and heads higher than ever.
Opening your mouth to speak, you felt the soothing breeze of pompous, opening gates inviting flowery winds. It was time nevertheless, you didn’t like promising something to your people a heart could easily jeopardize. 'You would be strong enough', you prayed to the Norns.
