BIOGRAPHY
trigger warning: death, (unwanted) (teenage) pregnancy, abortion
Rosa was born as the eldest of two daughters to Miguel and Clementine. Their household was filled with the riches of her Colombian culture while respecting the American customs and beliefs. Miguel and Clementine had both been living in Colombia when they had met, Clementine having made the journey to help out at a children's hospital in Bogota. Since Clementine wasn't able to stay, the two decided to create their family. Rosa only vaguely remembers her mother, who passed away when pregnant of their third child. Miguel, trying the best he could to raise two spirited girls, worked multiple jobs in order to make sure his daughters could grow old in the house he made a home with the love of his life.
Miguel raised his daughters with morals, though emotionally unavailable, he made sure they had what they needed in life, raising them bilingual, the way Clementine wanted them to be raised. Rosa was always a lively girl, exploring the outside world, often angering her father when he didn't know where she was and setting out a search party for her only for her to be climbing trees and jumping over mud puddles. She'd never been one for academics, though she never failed any of her classes. She studied enough to pass her grades but never to excel at anything but her Spanish and history classes.
Life spiraled when all of a sudden her sister got sick. Her father had been working a night shift, leaving Rosa to drive her sister to the hospital, having to call her father at work to hurry over there. Turned out, her teenage sister had gotten pregnant and, just like her mother, suffered from pregnancy poisoning. As life would've had it, she would suffer the same end her mother did. At the mere age of eighteen, Rosa was now motherless, and had gone from having a sister, to being an only child. Her father became a shell then, even more protective over Rosa who felt smothered by his attention, his concerns and how he inserted himself over every aspect of her life. Their last conversation had ended in a fight and Rosa had left her family home with nothing but a suitcase filled with clothes, the money she had saved up with her side job and important documents.
Rosa tried to get by. Crashing at her friends, even spending some nights at a shelter. She dove right into work, seeing as she wouldn't even be able to afford a study. Slowly but surely she saved up enough money for a small trailer at the trailer park in driftwood haven. The thing was a freezing icebox in winter and resembled the brazen bull in summer. Name a location in Kismet, and Rosa will have worked there, even if it was either for a week, or four months, she did her experience and either she was let go or she found something better, learning things along the way.
Just after her twenty-first birthday, Rosa met Michael. A charming man who was currently separated from his wife. It still felt tricky, to date a man who hadn't fully divorced his spouse yet, but the attraction she felt towards him was undeniable. Soon, all her free time was spent with him, around him or she found herself doing things for him. After a few months of dating, Rosa found herself shaken to her core. Michael told her that he had decided to rekindle his relationship with his wife after all which put a final stop to their relationship. She wasn't proud of the way she handled the rejection. She'd become depressed, sleeping day in and day out that it took being lay off from two jobs and a final warning from the other that she knew she had to be better at adulting. Still heartbroken, she collected herself, showing up at work, getting hired for another one. But she found herself exhausted all the time, even after a full night sleep. She couldn't sleep she was so ill when eventually she fainted on the job.
Waking up in the hospital was one thing, and rather than being worried for her own health, she was more worried about the medical bills she'd have to pay. But then, a death sentence followed: congratulations, you're pregnant. She was certain that the doctor had seen many crying women, elated at the news. But Rosa's tears were those of fear, mortified about the idea she would follow in her mother's and sister's footsteps. She wasn't sure what made her do it, knowing she had no right to insert herself into Michael's life anymore, but she had texted him, asking if he could pick her up from the hospital so she could go home. She still trusted him enough to talk to him about being pregnant, about how she was frightened, since he knew what had happened to her family, and how she didn't want to be alone for the abortion. Instead, she was being met with misunderstanding, with being told that she couldn't abort his child. She didn't know her heart could break anymore than it already had, looking at the man she had told she loved him over and over again. He didn't seem to care about her fears, only the fact that this was his chance to finally have a child, as he and his wife had been struggling with infertility.
They argued back and forth, love turning into hate for Rosa could not believe he would have her go through all that, possibly even with the chance that both her and the baby wouldn't make it. And then, one night, he finally told her to go ahead with it. She didn't know why she hadn't just made an appointment and told him afterwards she had done it, it might have prevented her from the trauma she was about to endure. Arriving at the hospital for the appointment, they concluded that her initial due date had been later than it actually was and that she was too late. Rosa was upset and terrified and she forwarded her rage towards Michael. Eventually she came to the decision that, since she would have this baby anyway, she wanted him to take it and then leave Kismet Harbor and that she would have no part in her baby's life, should she be able to walk away with her life.
The fact that she was pregnant with no partner sent lips talking. Everywhere she went, she was met with judgy looks, even some of her bosses and colleagues going so far to make her feel unwelcome on the work floor that she had to switch jobs over and over. She was lucky no one had made the connection between her and Michael, who people knew had been unfaithful to his wife. She had many doctors appointments, especially because of her family history. By the time she had given birth to her child, she was exhausted, mentally unwell and basically the opposite of who she was before. She had refused to look at her child, hadn't said goodbye to Michael and carried on with her life.
Building it back up piece by piece was a slow and grueling experience. She made reckless and impulsive decisions, especially in her love life, leaving behind a trail of one night stands and flings but running as soon as she felt butterflies. Getting and keeping a job was still hard, but when she eventually found a place at the whiskers and wags salon, she knew that she one day wanted to start a place of her own, in a place perhaps far away from Kismet, a town filled with, but mostly, negative memories. Over the years she saved up, taking extra jobs, even having a summer job at the summer camp in town that gave her a nice extra pay, and since her employer's child went there, her boss gladly gave her time off from her job whenever needed. She managed to trade her first 'home' for an apartment above the tattoo shop, where she even received her first tattoo, a symbol that life does give second chances. Now in her 30s, she's purely focused on her future, setting up her own business to trim dogs and cats and shower them with love. She has her eyes set outside of Kismet, but the question is, how long will it take for her to make her dream a reality?
