it had been a tough week. it had started out promisingly enough; a cute muggle girl in her pottery class had asked her for coffee, her smile making nix’s whole body feel like it was melting into puddles of goo at her feet. the coffee itself had been good too; not too high, and sprinkled with whipped topping that said aforementioned cute girl had rubbed away from her upper lip with a nervous smile. it had been great. things had kind of spiraled by the end of the date – cute girl had leaned in for a kiss as phoenix had gone for a huge, landing somewhere between an awkward half-embrace and a brushed kiss to her forehead. the muggle girl avoided her gaze in classes now and phoenix wished she had a time-turner to go back and prevent the entire awkward exchange from happening in the first place. but in the muggle world, there were no time-turners. no do-overs, no second chances. just awkward half glances and several pottery stations in between you and the person you’ve started avoiding. even coffee tasted awkward now – a reminder of her social failures.
avoiding her favorite coffee shop in muggle london was what found her in diagon alley, nursing a hot chocolate. her spoon was charmed to detect when her beverage was too cold, its handle flashing a bright yellow to indicate a warming charm was needed. she cast it haphazardly, eyes focused on the worn paperback book in her hand. walking and casting spells probably wasn’t the smartest move, but given that her coat was charmed with an impervious charm, she wasn’t too worried about spillage. her book and her hands, however, was another story … but that hadn’t occurred to the witch. on the last of things to do before making her way back to her dorm, stopping in for some art supplies was at the top of the list. while she knew using magical pastels that never dried out or cracked was probably cheating, she was sick and tired of the muggle variety crumbling under her fingertips as they started to wear down. she figured as long as she was careful not to leave them laying around, there’d be none the wiser. in fact, were you to look closely at the witch, you’d likely see a blue smudge just above her cheek bone, a product of the aforementioned shoddy muggle pastels. wizarding pastels, after all, were spelled with anti smudge magic. or at least, that was how phoenix explained it. there were probably more artfully crafted words used to explain the process but she liked her own explanations well enough.
though immersed in her goals and her novel as she was, phoenix still recognized the unmistakable sound of aurora clearwater’s voice before she spotted her. thankfully too, as they were about to collide. she dug her heels in, the hot liquid of her coffee spilling over the lid and onto her hand. she cursed loudly, slinging poor merlin through the mud as she did so, casting a cooling charm quickly on her hand. “ bugger. that was stupid. i’m sorry, i didn’t mean to – uh, well, say what i did. i didn’t mean it. “ her cheeks were flaming red, a contrast to the blue smudge that stained one cheek and made it resemble more of a purple-ish hue. “ no. no. you weren’t in the way. i promise. i wasn’t looking where i was going. “ she smiled sheepishly. “ my nose was in the book. i guess it was only a matter of time before disaster struck. “ and truthfully, wherever nix vasquez ventured, disaster wasn’t usually very far behind.

aurora’s brain scans through the mental list, the next stop was flourish and blotts to pick up a book she’d been wanting to read and was a must have. then perhaps depending on if she could handle the crowds-- she’d swing by for a scoop of no melt ice cream. and then see afterwards if she needed anything else, perhaps she’d even pick something up for her two cats. it had been a rather productive day already-- and she felt like she’d be super happy to go home and relax for a little bit. even if there was a lot of shops in diagon alley to stop by, and she was running low on something’s including parchment. she zips the small pocket inside of her satchel, where she’d put her crystals into. as ocean hues glance upwards to see phoenix, what had been a friendly smile; faltered at the sight of the coffee spilling, and onto her friend’s hand. “it’s okay, the real question is are you alright? that looked like it hurt.” the blonde takes that as her cue, to finish zipping up her bag entirely. so that she could focus her attention on making sure phoenix was alright. “do you need me to take a look?” she inquires, to be fair either way she still would have offered anyway. “it wouldn’t be a problem. it’s an easy fix.” comes her promise, especially when she knew how to heal something like that and what to do. “you sure? i mean i’m also kind of in the way too. i might have picked the worst possible place to stop and make sure i wouldn’t lose my crystals. so it’s my fault just as much for being in a bad spot.” she was sure she looked like she felt bad because she did over the situation. also blaming the incident entirely on stopping right near the door.
an apologetic smile still written across her features. “don’t worry about it though. accidents happen.” it was just one of those things where she knew in a sense-- they were kind of bound to happen and you couldn’t really help that. but also that there wasn’t anything wrong with that. at the same time. merlin knew it happened to everyone. “if anything we can just say it’s both of our faults. your the one who spilt your coffee after all.. i can always get you another? or perhaps treat you to some florean’s?” had came the friendly offer, unable to not want to offer that. “i’ve done that so many times. it’s so hard to want to put a book down once you get started. especially if it’s really good.” which was coming from someone who was such a major bookworm and went through books so quickly, but always wanted to read more. probably explained why she had so many books. “i know when i’m reading it’s hard to get my attention. so i totally get it! even if this isn’t the ideal way to catch up with you. it’s still good to see you though, how have you been-- you know.. besides the coffee? good i would hope!”
