Chapter 6:
It was the morning of the 4th day and Jane still hadn’t actually woken up. She was beginning to think that maybe she had slipped into a comma or something because this dream had lasted an insane amount of time. But hey who was she to complain- she was going to keep using this time for as long as she possibly could.
Honestly throughout the day she would often forget that this wasn’t really happening. All the conversations, classes, food, and events made it seem like real life. She had thought multiple times how real everything was, and in the back of her mind she worried how getting too deep into this dream would affect her when she woke…. But that was for later Jane to worry about.
Classes today were transfiguration and flying. She was incredibly nervous about the second one, but that wasn’t until later so she tried to forget about it as she walked with Garreth to breakfast. The puppy-like boy had waited for her again in the morning, and he seemed excited that they would be sharing another class today. Transfiguration wasn’t given a lot of screen time in the game, so she didn’t really know who was even in the class. As far as she knew he was the only of her uh acquaintances she shared the class with- which, now that she was thinking about it-
“Garreth- are we friends?” She knew the question would be coming out of nowhere for him, but she was curious as to what he thought.
“Uh I mean I think so, if um that’s also what you think.” He seemed a little shy about his answer.
“If I’m being honest I thought of you as a friend from our first conversation. But I’m used to people not sharing the same sentiments as me around here so I was curious about what you thought. So, I can call you my friend right?”
“Y-yes, of course!” he still looked a little shocked, but he had a pretty big grin on his face. She smiled back, glad that she could think of him as a friend and not have it feel one sided.
They sat together as they ate, the Gryffindor boy chatting happily the whole time. It seemed that opening the friendship door had allowed him to feel comfortable enough to start discussing his love of potions with her. It made it seem like she was talking to the Garreth that she knew from the game, and that made her happy. She liked him as her cute little puppy, but even if this was just a dream- she still wanted him to feel comfortable with her.
When they left for class he continued his chatter all the way there. He was like an endless trove of potions knowledge- it was honestly quite impressive. He knew the ingredients to every potion she had ever heard over, and even a lot of their counter positions or antidotes. She was feeling really good about her choice of asking for his help to study the subject.
When they walked into the transfiguration class, the younger Weasley was called over by his aunt- and begrudgingly left her side. She decided to take a seat next to Natty, who she then remembered was also in the class. The other girl was busy reading a book when she sat down, so she left her to it. She looked around the room- it seemed that this class was shared by people in every house. Soon more familiar faces walked in, including Poppy (who she was dying to meet), Sebastian, and Ominis.
The two Slytherin boys walked in together, and Jane couldn’t help but stare. Sebastian caught her eye and whispered something to Ominis who then shoved him in response, making the brown haired boy laugh. He sent a wink towards her and that made her face flush. Then he motioned for her to come sit by them, but she shook her head. She would not be able to focus at all if she was sitting anywhere near Ominis- charms had proven that even seeing him would be enough of a distraction.
When class started Professor Weasley made a grand show by changing an owl into a book- a very impressive thing to watch. Magic was seriously the coolest. For the benefit of the main character, the class was focussed on the transfiguration spell- which why there was only one and why they would go over it again in the 5th year was beyond her.
They were to transfigure a rock into a butterfly- a task that seemed quite insurmountable. The game made everything look so easy, it was so frustrating. She worked all of class on the task, and only made it in time with the help of Natty. She helped fix her wand movements every time she messed them up, and helped her try to mentally work through the magic. The Gryffindor girl was brilliant, honestly a really great partner to have in class.
Natty’s story line in the game was a fun one to play- but if she was being honest… she might just bypass it here. Nothing against the girl, but her quests weren’t needed as part of the main story, and Jane was already feeling pressed for time. And when it came down to it, if she was going to choose a non mandatory story to play through it would be Poppy’s. BUT she still hoped she could at least become friends with Natty from classes that they shared.
She thanked her for her help as class ended, saying goodbye as she went to talk with the Professor. It was time for a progress check in- hopefully it went as well as it did in the game. She was feeling a little nervous walking up, she wasn’t sure what she would say- this didn’t actually happen until later in the game.
Thankfully it was all positives from the teacher, nothing but glowing remarks. She was basically accosted about her activities with Fig, but it was easy enough to brush her off. Honestly, she didn’t know why she didn’t just tell her- she always thought it was dumb that Fig asked her to keep everything a secret.
When the conversation ended she went to collect her things from her desk. As she did so a pit started to form in her stomach as she thought about her next class. She was going to have to learn to fly… on a broom… in the air… she wanted to puke just thinking about it. If this dream was consistent, then flying was going to feel very very real.
“Jane! Hey Jane!”
The Gryffindor girl turned around, realizing that someone was calling her name. She had managed to get her stuff and had left the class feeling a bit manic. She wasn’t really paying attention to the things around her and had totally missed the Slytherin boy waiting for her outside of class.
“Oh, uh sorry Sebastian I was just…” She didn’t finish the sentence, her brain felt a little bit clouded.
“Are you doing alright? You look a little bit worse for wear.” He raised an eyebrow as he looked her over.
“I’m fine- just feeling a little bit nervous about my next class.”
“Which is?”
“Flying.” She didn’t meet his eyes, honestly she couldn’t really deal with any of his signature teasing remarks right now. He didn’t quite seem like the comforting type.
“Have you never flown on your own before?”
“Uh I’ve never been on a broom period.” The nerves were getting to her. Surely she didn’t need to take this class. She could find a way to get where she needed to around Hogwarts Valley without riding a broom. She leaned up against the wall, already feeling like she was going to be sick.
“Whoa hey no need to be so nervous- when is your class?”
She looked around for a clock, spotting one across the hall. “In twenty minutes.”
“Well you’re in luck because that leaves us just enough time for you to get some exposure.”
She didn’t even get a chance to ask what he meant because he grabbed her hand and whisked her off to the courtyard. Once there he used his summoning charm to get his broom- a very fancy looking one too.
“Got this last year when I played on the quidditch team” He showed it off like it was a new baby.
“It's very nice, but um, what exactly are you planning to do with it right now? I would rather wait for a teacher to show me how to ride- no offense.”
“Non taken- and I’m not going to teach you how to ride it, I’m going to give you some experience so when you’ve got to do it on your own it won't seem so bad.”
“So you’re telling me that I’m supposed to fly, with you, on that broom.”
“Yes!” He smiled so brilliantly at her she almost had to shield her eyes.
“Can a broom even support two people?”
“I don’t know, probably.” He meant it as a joke, but then tried to make up for it when he saw her face. “I promise it's safe, I did it loads of times as a kid with my dad- sometimes he even took me and my sister. And I am a very good flyer.”
She looked at him skeptically as he got on, holding his hand out to her. She appreciated the idea, but she was still feeling really nervous about the whole thing. Maybe it would just be better to try it under a teacher's supervision.
“Hey- I thought you said you trusted me.” Using her own words against her.
“Oh fuck it!” She dropped her bag to the ground and got on behind him- ignoring his hand. She straddled the long handle between her legs, a little concerned how this would go down with a skirt on. She understood now why the game gave you a lot of different clothes options with pants. Once she started adventuring more often she would need to find some riding gear.
She moved in close to her driver, wrapping her arms around his waist; closing her eyes and holding on as if they were already in the air. She probably looked ridiculous but she didn’t care- she was so fucking scared.
“Now try to hold on tight” He teased her.
“Just shut up and go before I change my mind” she snapped back, face smashed up against his back.
She heard his laugh as he kicked them upward, the air leaving her body. She wanted to scream but there was nothing left inside her to make a sound. As they rose she did find a way to hold on even tighter to him, her fingers going numb as she held tight onto his vest. They kept going up and up and up, and Jane fought to keep her breakfast down. Then he started to move them forward.
She found her voice again, and as they zoomed forward she screamed louder than she had on any rollercoaster. Her eyes were still closed tight and she held on as if her life depended on it. It continued like that for a few moments until she heard him call back to her.
“Open your eyes!”
“NO WAY!!” She screamed back.
“I promise if you look nothing bad will happen.”
“Do you promise to catch me if I pass out?”
“You won't, but yes- I promise.”
She took a deep breath and tentatively moved her face away from his back. Once she was no longer stuck to him, she opened one of her eyes the smallest she possibly could. What she saw though made her open both eyes all the way as she took in the spectacle before her. Sebastian had carried them up high enough that she could see the entire valley of Hogwarts. Seeing the school and all the surrounding nature made her think that this was what the game wanted you to experience in the opening scene.
It was terrifying being up this high, but somehow the beauty of the world before her counteracted the fear. She allowed herself to peel off of him a little bit more so she could move her head around and see more of the view. It was breathtaking; completely ethereal. It made her think for the first time that maybe she had found herself in something more than just a dream, because there was no way her mind could create something like this.
She noticed that Sebatian had turned his head and was looking at her, a huge grin on her face. She felt her face get hot as she met his stare and turned to look back at the view. He laughed, deep and hearty, and it made her feel more butterflies. She moved in a little closer to him again, holding him more in a hug rather than a death grip.
He flew around for a few more minutes before gracefully making their decant back to the transfiguration courtyard. She was grateful that he didn’t do a dramatic nosedive to get them down- that act may have undone any progress she had made.
When they touched back down he got off the broom first and offered her his hand. She ignored it again, thinking it was a bit much for just moving one leg off a broom. But when she stepped down her legs immediately turned to jelly and she started to fall right to the ground. Thankfully he had anticipated this and caught her before she hit- and it was so fucking smooth it gave her butterflies again. He lifted her back into a standing position.
“Uh thanks- I guess I probably should have just taken your hand.” she used the excuse of brushing dirt off her uniform so he wouldn’t see her blushed face yet again.
“I don’t mind catching you, as long as you react like that every time-” She shot him a glare but he just gave her another dazzling smile in return. Damn this smooth talking mother fucker.
“So, do you feel a bit better about class now?”
“Actually, yes. I wasn’t totally sure about your plan but it seemed to really take the edge off. Thank you Sebastian.”
They smiled again at each other. She decided though that she wanted to even the playing field a little bit. She stepped towards him, placed her hands on his shoulders to lower him down to her height, and gave him a small peck on the cheek. As she pulled away he watched his face turn beet red and she smiled even wider. Then she turned on her heels and started heading towards her class, only looking back long enough to give him a wave goodbye.
