FRIENDS (1994-2004) 1.01 The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (2026) dir. Francis Lawrence
i honestly believe that getting stuck in the apocalypse was the only thing that could have FIXED five.
it seems weird because the apocalypse was the start of all the horrors he went through, but i genuinely believe it gave him a kickstart down a better path. and don't get me wrong when i say this, i don't think "bad" people need bad things to happen to them to make them good, nor do i believe five was a "bad" kid. this is just how what caused him to become a better person happened, and it was unfortunately an apocalypse.
from the little bit of five's childhood we see, he was generally a pretty egotistical kid, he thought he was too big for his britches. and honestly, i can't blame him. what 13 year old child of a billionaire with superpowers WOULDN'T be egotistical or overly confident in their abilities? especially one that was specifically held back from his full abilities because it was dangerous for him. i'm honestly surprised the rest of the brellies aren't as confident in their abilities as he is (except maybe diego...he's pretty damn confident in himself/his powers).
adult five definitely puts on that same rude, snarky, overly confident, a fair bit egotistical persona he had as a child. maybe he was just doing it so his siblings had someone familiar instead of a whole new man to meet, he probably did to some degree. but there is something distinctly different about him, and it's that he's less selfish, more devoted to other people (his family, the world he wants to save, etc.), and that he's using his powers for more reasons than "i want to."
sure, the apocalypse was a pretty big ramification and something smaller would have had the same effect, but experiencing a serious ramification for just using his powers willy nilly was something five needed to become a better person, to have personal growth in general. i think that if he hadn't had any consequences for it, he would be the exact same person we saw in the few moments we saw of five as a kid.
Regarding his powers, Reginald himself admitted that his Umbrella version made children fear/underestimate their powers in order to better control them. I think this began after Reginald became afraid of Viktor's powers. That's why Reginald caused Klaus to panic from the dead, locking him in the crypt. Ben has an aversion to his powers (Ben, a Sparrow, is completely confident in his abilities, like the other Sparrows). He simply manipulated Allison, forcing her to use her powers for his own benefit, not against him. Luther was simply under his control, and he intentionally simplified Diego's power to knife-throwing, so Diego quickly mastered it. Reginald also controlled Five, preventing him from traveling through time, but Five left him earlier than the others, so he was less susceptible to his father's influence.
THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE (2013) Directed by Francis Lawrence.
-Finnick Odair, right? -Yes. He won his Games at 14. Youngest ever. Extremely humble. -You're kidding. -Yes, I'm kidding. He's a peacock. A total preener. But he's The Capitol darling. They love him here. Charming, smart, and very skilled at combat. Especially in water. -What about weaknesses? -One. Mags.
