Hip hip hooray, it’s National Hippo Day! Did you know hippos (Hippopotamus amphibious) are the one of the largest living land animals in the world? When born, calves can weigh nearly 100 pounds (45 kilograms)—and full-grown adults can reach weights of up to 7,055 pounds (3,200 kilograms)! These large herbivores are native to eastern and sub-saharan Africa, where they prefer to live along rivers and lakes. A couple of other impressive stats about hippos? They can hold their breath underwater for as long as five minutes, and they have one of the strongest bites in the animal kingdom!
