you rolled your tights back up and slid your skirt back on, the small ticks of the clock were the only noise filling the room.
“that was a good show,” you said as you fixed your jacket in the mirror— this bathroom you were in seemed just as cramped as it felt two minutes ago as you were hooking up with this girl.
she looked familiar, but you couldnt put your finger on it. maybe you had hooked up before and she just got lucky again.
she leaned against the wall, fixing her shitty belt as she steadied her breath. her messy hair covered her honey brown eyes.
“it was whatever... my bands having a show here next weekend if you wanna come?” she toyed with her lip ring while she stared at you, waiting for a response.
“id have to think about that one,” you smirked and fixed your lipstick, “i dont hook up with the same girl twice y’know?”
you didnt wait for a response this time, just slipped out— no bye or nothing, that just wasnt your thing. the place was empty, just the last band to play packing up and your friend waiting for you by the bar.
“hey sorry, she was pretty rough. are you ready to go now?” you smiled at her and waved your keys as she rolled her eyes.
you were sober, nothing in your system. you did all of this willingly— every time. it was never a mistake but it was never supposed to be anything more even if they were in your scene they were always too pussy to fight against a pretty girl like you.
though sometimes you wish they did.
your friend never questioned it either, she tried to but you never gave her an answer. there never was one. every girl you had hooked up with was just a notch in your metaphorical bedpost, a reminder that nothing was ever permanent.
the car ride was quiet, an agreement between the two of you like always. the music was low, buzzing from the radio.
“my chem is playing next weekend?” she perked up, “do you wanna go with me?”
you tapped your fingers on the steering wheel, “sure, wheres it gonna be?” the cold from outside creeped into your car, lingering around your body like a reminder that this was real life. it was happening now.
“same venue as tonight, apparently their rhythm guitarist was here but i didnt see her.” your friend pouted. her body drooping into the seat as you pulled into her drive way.
“oh okay— yeah i can come with you,” you gave her a soft smile as she got off, telling you that it would be fun.
the week somehow passed quickly, you had spent most of your time laying around your apartment and the rest of it was spent trying to pick up shifts at the local library.
you wondered what could change if you decided to just let life happen, let things change and take their place in your life.
the venue was buzzing, your eyeliner smeared from the tears shed while laughing just as you walked in— watching as a girl stumbled outside to smoke a cigarette.
you stumbled just a bit, bumping into young teens and older men as you wandered for a moment.
you needed this. you craved the way you could easily lure these girls in, make them want more but nobody could ever have more. not from you.
and you simply loved the music too, these shows meant more than a hook up to you sometimes, but only sometimes.
there were moments that, sure it felt good but you were in another headspace like you werent sure what to feel because it definitely was not true love.
you watched a tall skinny girl pass by you, her hair hidden underneath a gray beanie. it was a light brown, glasses sitting on the tip of her nose and a stupid tshirt sticking to her tiny waist.
she looked at you, face reddening as she turned around. you took a sip of your drink and smiled.
“i think im gonna switch my drink out this shit sucks.”
“oh— sure yeah ill be over here, im trying to get to the front.” your friend smiled as she got on the points of her toes trying to peer over the many heads blocking her view.
you walked over to the bar, sliding next to where the same girl was, her eyes darting away from you once she saw you walking her way.
“could i buy ya a drink? you look pretty nervous,” you smiled at her, not waiting for an answer but instead ordering two beers, you hated the taste but it was easy to down and she looked like the type of girl to drink beer anyway.
she pushed her glasses up just a bit, playing with the hem of her shirt. you told her your name as you handed her a beer, watching the way her skinny fingers wrapped around the neck of the bottle.
“m’names mikey, thanks for the drink— ill see you after the show?” she winked and turned to face the stage, watching as they finished setting everything up.
her eyes went from your face to your body, watching carefully at how you looked as you drank the beer.
“sounds good.” you watched her walk away, hips moving with a slight sway as she walked towards the front of the stage.
she walked to the back, where only the band was allowed.
“fuck,” you muttered to yourself as you finished gulping the last drops of your drink and went back to find your friend in the crowd.
the quick encounter was like any other but mixed with the taste of beer in your mouth it felt like you were going to puke all over the place.
you shouldve, just let it all out and dip but you promised your friend you would go and drive her back home.
you decided to lay low towards the back, only pushing towards the front towards the end of the show.
you watched as her eyes scanned the room, light gray beanie firm in her head. her sweaty hair sticking to her face.
she played like it was nothing, the bass was just a pawn in her little game. somehow she spotted you, blushing as she held the bass just a little closer— using it to protect her heart almost.
it was like this the whole show, you would linger around her side of the stage and smile as she stared at you. you gave her a few winks as she was scurrying off to get off stage.
“how was that?” she asked, peeling her sweaty bangs off her face.
you smiled and gave her a light kiss on the mouth, “pretty good,” grabbing her hand you led her to the bathroom, “wanna show me what else you can do?”
she let out a noise— between a whine and a high pitched moan, girls like her were your favorite they didnt require much teasing and were pretty quick learners.
the whole thing passed in a blur, it always does. it wasnt worth it at this point but you still did it, it felt like a ritual.
she suckled on the skin on your neck, rutting into you like a needy puppy. mikey watched as you slipped your jacket back on.
“i think i have to go but you were pretty good,” you smiled as you reached to unlock the door.
“wait, will i ever see you again?” she pouted with her kiss swollen lips.
“in your dreams maybe.” you slipped out, leaving her all alone to deal with the aftermath of a cold hearted girl.
it felt like deja vu— though it wasnt, you had already gone through this last week. leaving the same venue with the same friend.
it was an endless time loop that you had put yourself through every single weekend since the beginning of time.
the following weeks you decided to take a break, you found yourself reminiscing on these girls that you barely knew. especially the last two, the way they were so different yet so alike and they were in the same band.
the touch from their calloused fingers burned onto you skin, a memory you couldnt let go of. the way they brought you extreme pleasure in one night, in a shitty bathroom you wondered if they knew just how awful you really were.
you walked to the nearest book store, looking for something new to pick up, something that could clear your mind.
the bells jingled and you felt the rough carpet against your converse. you turned to look at the cashiers and noticed an all too familiar gray beanie.
you watched as she helped a little girl who was buying a small picture book, giving her a small smile as she handed the girl her change.
it would be fine you would just buy the book and leave, no strings attached so it was fine.
you wandered to the back and ended up near the paranormal books, your eyes gazed at some familiar titles as you looked for something new.
you grazed the spines of the book, feeling how new and untouched they were. holding a story that was yet to be read.
“no fucking way,” her voice was calm but estatic— like she had finally found what she was missing.
you turned around slowly and were met with the same hazel eyes and shiny lip ring, her lips curved into a stupid smirk.
“i never thought id see you again,”
“frankie! its uh frankie sorry, has it been that long?” she cut you off and ran her hand through her hair, “ive been looking for you all over, i never thought id see you again,”
you smiled at her, “its a pretty small town, we were bound to run into each other anyway.” god she was so eager how could you let her down.
“can i buy you a coffee? or if youre busy walk you home? i dont mind i just wanna talk y’know?” she rambled on as she began to tell you about her favorite book from that aisle
you decided to just buy whatever book and go check out, frankie following you like a golden retriever as you got in line.
her hand slipped around your waist, she muttered about how her band was doing pretty well and she asked you why you didnt show up.
“i was there, you probably just didnt see me,” you tried to escape her grasp, hoping mikey wouldnt see you two so close.
“yeah i probably didnt but wow i wish i did,” she tightened her grip on your waist as you walked up to the register,
mikey held her head low and scanned the barcode for the book, lifting her gaze as she heard frankies voice, “oh frankie hey— what is this?” she gazed between you and frankie.
you gave her a small smile and opened your mouth to talk, frankie cutting you off before you could even say anything,
“remember that girl i was telling you about? this is her,”
“oh— yeah sure, looks nice.”
you handed mikey your cash, “mikey, i can explain—“
“how do you know mikes? you guys friends?”
“we can be friends if you hook up with them in the bathroom after a show,” mikey handed you your change, sliding the book as she waited for the receipt to come out.
frankies grip on you loosened, “what are you talking about?” she stared between you and mikey, waiting for a response from the two of you.
“i hooked up with mikey at the show you had invited me to,” you grabbed your book and got ready to head out, “but i told you for a reason i dont hook up with the same girl twice for a reason, sorry frankie.”
you walked away from them both just how you had done it the time before, you felt horrible inside. you could hear frankie yelling your name but you couldnt turn around, not anytime soon.
the consequences of those nights had caught up to you, you couldnt run from them anymore— you wondered if frankie would still try to pursue you, her eagerness was inviting.
there was also something about mikey that was so inviting, she was so shy that you wanted to explore her.
you walked to the park, letting your shoes get wet from the puddles it felt like you were deserving of it— you didnt deserve a happy ending like those movies with the same trope.
the park was eerily empty, you watched as the wind blew the dead leaves and washed them away.
you picked a flower from the bush, picking at the petals as you watched everyone pass by. the city kept going, lives kept going but your didnt.
as you were watching the day go by you noticed frankie and mikey walking around, like they were looking for someone, looking for you almost.
you stared down at your shoes, covered in mud and scuffs from over the years.
you could hear footsteps approaching you, the leaves crunching under them. “are you gonna tell us, like anything?” frankies voice rang through your ears, her face was upset.
you stared up at the both of them, watching as they waited for your response.
“im sorry frankie— and mikey,” you stood up and grabbed your bag, “but really, this was nothing. it will never mean anything.” your voice shook at the end, like you couldnt believe your own words but that was really it.
it would never mean anything, not anytime soon.
