¼ ROLEPLAYSĀ ā Ā of dragon riders
Iāve awaited your coming many years, young Rider. Many years, indeed.Ā
By the Queenās Command | Cassius & Romayne
Romayneās movements had been restricted from the moment he had arrived in Aragoth and since then, heād only seen the Queen exert more control with every passing day. The security she had placed around him now, was constant. It was for his own protection, he had been told.Ā
Convenient, Romayne thought. The more he tried to slip away, the stronger her grasp. And with cousins being murdered and kidnapped, to even suggest that it be otherwise would seem foolish.Ā
Romayne had always been a man of action. Lying idle with nothing to do for days did not suit him. Had he been allowed to procure himself some female entertainment, he would have been satisfied ... but as the future husband of the Queen, he knew that that would certainly be denied him.Ā
He was half dressed when it was announced that Cassius Montagu was there to see him. He didnāt bother making himself presentable to see meet the dragon rider (even though the thought of making him wait was rather tempting).Ā
āAh, Cassius,ā He greeted, walking leisurely into the room, popping a grape into his mouth,Ā āAm I being summoned?ā He asked, raising an eyebrow,Ā āOr are you simply a messenger today?āĀ Ā
ooc | Romayne & Dezòd
lol another couple that we never???? talked about??? somehow???? even though they are literally???? council members together??? #facepalmĀ
honestly, i feel like romayne would be likeĀ āwtfā about dezòd and would probably make some comments towards him that he wouldnāt otherwise make but ... since heās both a naturally impulsive guy anD considers himself to be a dead man walking, he really doesnāt have much to loose, he feels, but upsetting the oldest and most powerful dude around! #smartĀ
Far to Go | Ed & Romayne
edmundbrowne:
Ed felt the air go out of him, his mouth falling open into a gape. Ā All the same, his imagination took off as he pictured those Southern Islanders being held in arid dungeons, lips parched for water, chapped and bleeding, being led to some grisly site for horrific punishmentā¦Nervously, he laughed. Ā āI canāt imagine many attempt it, in that case.ā Ā Ed cleared his throat and glanced away. Ā He was acting guilty. Ā He knew he was acting guilty. Ā But he was not. Ā āFunny, thatās just what Old Tom told me the Queen would do to me for pilfering, the first day I started work here.ā Ā He was still clutching the cloth. Ā āGood job Iām not a thief, then, eh?ā Ā He laughed. Ā āIāve only so much skin to go around,ā he added with a bright laugh. Ā Realized it wasnāt funny. Ā Shook his head.
Ed broke out into genuine (relieved) laughter at the sound of Romayneās own chuckle. Ā āOh, gods, you, you really had me going there,ā he added, pointing at him. Ā Heād been perfectly serious about Old Tomās threat. Ā He wondered, now, if either threat were true. Ā He decided not to test the theory, regardless.Ā
Realizing he was still clutching the cloth, he held it out to Romayne. Ā āI, uh, I did only mean to fold it, I swear,ā he began. Ā āBut itās very beautiful andā¦the symbolsā¦Is it true you worship the wind and the, uh, the earth, and such?ā he added, gesturing first skyward and then earthward. Ā āI mean, thatās not really so different from Aragothi tradition, if you think about it. Ā We believe, you know, that the Creator formed dragons and what are dragons if not flame made flesh?ā Ā Realizing he was prattling, he scrunched up his face and shook his head at himself. Ā āNot thatā¦that would be any business of mine, Your Grace.ā
āMen can be foolish when they are blinded by greed ⦠or hunger. There were more attempts than you might think to steal what was mine away from me, despite the punishment. Your own good queen has was to execute pirates for stealing from her and they were not deterred by this possibility. To some, the promise of such a reward outweighs the risk of a horrible death.ā Sometimes the life that was being left, was already a fate worse than death. Romayne sat the Queenās council and although his position there held no real power, he heard and saw a great deal. The citizens of Aragoth were suffering under her rule, just as others had suffered under his own brother.
He titled his head, āTell me, is there a thing here, amongst my treasures, that you would risk your life for?ā He knew it would be a slightly uncomfortable question: say nothing and risk offending him; name something and raise suspicion ⦠but Romayne couldnāt resist a bit of fun.
He stepped towards him, taking the cloth from Edmundās grasp to better point things out to him. āA dragon is a powerful thing,ā He agreed, āAnd perhaps it was your Creator who made them. But nothing is more powerful than the elements ⦠without them, we would all perish.ā He thought the Aragothi religion to be a foolish one. They wanted to thing that god was like them and the images of their gods were humanlike. But the earth was more powerful than any man, Romayne thought, it has the power to destroy us all. Ā

Suspicions | Evie & Romayne
Genevieve Beaumont had been an advocate for the release of Alexandir Godiva from the moment he had been imprisoned. She demanded a fair trial on his behalf; the one he was given had been a sham. Even Romayne Vitalis, who had never once attended an Aragothi trial, could tell that it had all only been for show. The Queen knew that she would declare her uncle guilty before it began.Ā
The Duke hadnāt a chance of being set free.Ā
Romanye had watched it all with a sense of foreshadowing: he looked at Alexandir: poor and miserable and helpless and he saw his own future. How long would it be before he was put to death for a crime he did not commit because he had outlived his usefulness to the Queen?Ā
Everyone seemed a little on edge now, except the Queen herself, who would never show such weakness, even if she felt it (although Romayne doubted that Rowena Godiva would quake in fear in front of anyone, little less her uncle - even if he had murdered Jon Valles). Genevieve Beaumont, however, seemed calm in comparison (especially, Romayne thought, when in contrast with her mother). Part of Romayne wondered if Genevieve had gone to Alexandir Godivaās aid. Romayne himself had betrayed his own brother in order to do what he thought was right. He wondered if Evie Beaumont had done the same.
Rowena had gathered her family around her this evening in the great hall. For their own protection, she had said, they would all stay near her tonight. When Rowena broke away to speak with Cassius on political matters, Romayne casually left her side and approached Genevieve.Ā
āI hope you are not frightened,ā He said, slipping into the empty seat next to her,Ā āAlthough ... I confess I would not blame you if you were. The man who stands accused of murdering your brother has escaped from the most secure prison in all the world with the man who kidnapped your sister.ā He took a sip of wine, watching her as closely as he could without looking directly at her.Ā āI wonder how they managed it.āĀ
OOC | Cris & Romayne
Honestly these twoā¦are probably besties obv ;DDD
oBVIOUslY!!!!!!Ā
Although .... idk ... I can actually see them really disliking each other or weirdly being friends???????? bUT i FEEL LIKE it probably also depends on how long theyāve known each other? Also ... I canāt remember, but did Cris fight in the wars against the Southern Isles at all????? Or was he just stationed at home???? B/c if they worked together when Romanye was helping Aragoth take over, I can see where they may have developed an unlikely friendship through that??? But like, if they only knew each other briefly in the short time Romayne spent in the south before moving north to become rowenaās glorified sex slave then I feel like they would for SURE get on each otherās nerves hahaĀ
rowenaās imperial council + tropes

tristanlanquetot:
EXCEPT FOR THE WEDDINGS/FUNERALS/TRIALS BYEEEEE Romayneās probs likeĀ āat least they have a lot of free entertainment around hereā jk jk ;DDD Ā Oh, yeah, I def do think he hangs around to ~attend on~ her majesty etc and hahaha omg I feel like he wonāt??? know??? what???? to make of Romayne hahaha like Tristan is honestly so reserved most of the time and Romayne isā¦noT and heās likeĀ āomgā but I mean heās also bffs w Arthur so like I do think he does tend to drift towards strong personalities itās just w a lot of head-desk moments ;DDDD
ALL I HEARD IS YOU LIKE BRUNETTES IM SCREAMING tristan is likeĀ āidk what i expectedā tbqh and like trying???? to talk him out of it and I feel like itās a total disaster #facepalm Ā I love it hahahaha
HAHAHAH omg I love that tristan gravitates towards strong personalities lol!!! also I feel like heās put up with aLOT (actually i know he has!!) being friends w/ arthur haha but idk that even that could prepare him for interacting w/ romayne. :))) also I think that romayne freaking hATES arthur (most of the time heās interacted w/ him has been during the council meetings haha and arthur is honestly at (almost) his worst at that point b/c he literally just agrees with whatever rowena says #facepalm). ANYWAY, I feel like romayne would like tristan but also feel like he needs better friends (honestly ... he kind of does *points to arthur and his treatment of ophelia*) and would def try to drag tristan to do x or y thing (honestly iām not even sure what x or y would be considering romayne has some ~restrictions~ haha it probably just involves tristan getting him some of the best wine he can find and coming back to romayneās chambers with it and then the two of them can drink it and drown their sorrows ;) )Ā

Far to Go | Ed & Romayne
Ed Browne wanted to see the world. Ā He dreamed of traveling to every distant stream and tree, of vast deserts and far-flung seas. Ā He dreamed of emerald isles and mirror-like lochs. Ā He dreamed of mountains and of valleys and of icy crags. Ā There was no part of the world that did not appeal to his curiosity and, never having seen anything outside the capitol, he idealized them all. Ā Ed recalled the first time he had spotted Romayne Vitalis, dressed in outlandish garb, sporting an exotic accent and he stared, for he had never seen the like.
Recently, Lady Genevieve Beaumont had brought an atlas (which apparently belonged to Lady Lynessa, having once been a possession of the Fontaines - the one-time prized possession of Lady Ophelia, he thought he had heard someone say) to show her cousin, Princess Helena. Ā While they were out taking tea on a veranda, Ed had crept over to take a look. Ā It was perhaps the most beautiful book Ed had ever seen, all elaborate drawings and edged in gold. Ā The whole of the world spilled out before him on its pages and, as Ed traced his finger along the map, he saw brook and bird and bear in his mind while taking in the detailed drawings. Ā It was from this map that he had learned where the Southern Isles were, that they were desert isles, and that it would cost him more than a lifetimeās worth of his current wages to ever get there.
Rather than despairing, however, it had merely strengthened his resolve that Ed would find other occupations on the side to earn a little more. Ā He would not forfeit his dream. Ā The other thing it had done, however, was assure him that it would be some time before he would ever go much of anywhere and so, he knew, he must abide his time, for now, here.
These thoughts were at the forefront of his room, just now, as he had been sent to straighten Romayneās chambers while he was out taking the air. Ā In Romayneās case, he had always heard, this could be rather an ordeal as the place often was in a bit of a disarray. Ā It was rumored that, though promised to the Queen, he entertained many guests in his chambers at night (mostly of the female persuasion), but it was not Edās place to judge, particularly when he did not know the truth of the matter. Ā What he did know was that this was his first time trusted with such an important task as attending on the Price of the Southern Isles, himself. Ā That was usually entrusted to servants considered to be of a higher caliber than himself, but what with the upcoming trial of none other than the Duke of Raimbeaucourt, himself, many of them were otherwise engaged at presentā¦leaving Ed to this.
The room didnāt look so bad, Ed noted as he slipped in (having knocked to verify that Romayne was not there), but there was a chest whose lid was thrown open. Ā From it folds of luxurious and colorful silks poured and jewels and precious metals, beaten into exotic designs, were housed. Ā These, he realized with glorious excitement, were genuine articles straight from the Southern Isles. Ā Edās eyes widened with wonder at the spectacle. Ā Iām just going to put the fabric back inside, he told himself. Ā And then close the lid. Ā Thatās all. Ā
Kneeling before it, Ed stretched out his hand towards the closest item - a fine yellow satin embroidered with elemental insignias. Ā His throat caught in his chest, remembering something heād read, once: The heretics of the Southern Isles worship none of the true gods, but rather bend the knee unto the heathen elements of wind and fire, of earth and water. Ā Lifting the item, he ran his fingers admiringly over the stitch-and-bead work, the fine softness of the fabricā¦and heard a creak behind him.
Whirling around, still clutching the garment, he turned to face none other than Romayne Vitalis, himself. Ā āYour Grace! Ā I-I can explain.ā Ā He formed his most winning smile and began, busily, to fold the fabric. Ā āYou see, this was hanging out of that chest there and Iā¦I thought Iād just fold it and put it awayā¦if it please Your Grace.ā Ā It was the truth, but he sounded very guiltyā¦because it was only part of the truth. Ā I didnāt mean to snoop, he thought, shyly. Ā But it changed nothing, because he had snooped notwithstanding.
Romayne was surprised (but then amused) to return to his chambers to find a servant boy bending down over his trunk. He took one look at him and he knew that the greatest crime being committed here might was likely only curiosity. There was an innocence and honesty about him: if he truly was stealing from him: Romayne would have half expected him to confess to it right there and then. And his motives for such an act would have only be dire necessity.
Still Romayne couldnāt resist scaring him a little: it had been a long, uneventful day (in a long series of uneventful days). When he first arrived, there was enough to occupy his days from weddings to murders to funerals -- but things had leveled out since then and his time as a glorified prisoner was starting to grate on him.
āDo you know what we do to men who try to steal from princes in the Southern Isles?ā He asked, striding into the room with an authority he hadnāt exserted since he arrived here. He bent down to the servantās level, āI would have your skin peeled from your bones.ā
He straightened, then, and managed a laugh to lighten the mood. āBut we are a far way from the Isles,ā And I have no power here, he thought. āTell me, what was it that so caught your eye?ā
Far From Home | Romayne & Cordelia
Heād walked from one end of the castle to the other, as he did most evenings before he finally retired. He knew the parts of the palace where he was allowed to go better than he knew his own home back in the South. Tonight, the Queen had invited her aunt and uncle and fair cousins to dine with her. Romayne had been happy for the added company (he always was). Eating with the Queen and the Princess alone, was never an ideal situation. He didnāt especially care much for Rowena and if he said too much to the sister, he was afraid that the Queen might have his head.
He had thought that they had all departed, but he supposed, upon seeing Cordelia, that his bride-to-be had something important to discuss with her uncle. (Or perhaps the entire council, save himself. He knew his position there was only for show: nothing he ever said carried any real weight)
āSunsets here are beautiful, indeed,ā He said, joining her to look out the tall dragonglass window, where they both watched as the sun slowly sunk beneath the trees.Ā āBut I wish you could see the sunsets of the Southern Isles. Every evening, the sky turns the most spectacular shades of orange and pink and red that you could imagine.ā He smiled down at her,Ā āOf course, Aragoth, too, has many beautiful things that the Southern Islanders could not possibly imagine.āĀ
āThe gods are fickle, Your Grace, particularly in the Imperial City. Ā You will, no doubt, learn that for yourself soon enough.ā

HonEStLY tho smh hahaha I feel like everyone who knows the truth is just waiting hahahaI think itās known that he works for the queen, but I think he just appears to be some sort of guard or consultant or something I doubt ppl know heās an assassin???? But I could def be wrong thatās frankly probs a call for Tina in terms of how open Rowena would be about it. But Iām guessing discreet? At least I know thatās what Cassius would counsel hahaha

cordeliaarrington:
Honestly Cordelia is the same and Arthurās kill stare will probably only encourage her tbh (given thatā¦she doesnāt know that heās literally actually murdered someone yknow)!! Sheās always a lil rebellious but esp now that everyoneās freaking out bc of Celia and Jon sheās like I DO WHAT I WANT smdh
Anyway I think she would genuinely enjoy Romayneās pov on things!!!!!!! Heās so new and exciting!!!!!! And sheād love to live in the freer world he describes!!!!! Not having any experience of the reality of it she totally idealizes what he hears and!!!! excitement!!!!! She wants to live like that (aka her perception of how thatād be hahaha) and sheād be all Morris moss voice: āevery value Iāve ever held is being questioned and im loving it!ā Smdh sheās like āIām so glad weāre going to be cousins! Weāll have so much to talk about!ā And meanwhile the entire house of arrington is screaming hahaha
oMGGGGGG I hadnāt even considered that arthurās kill!stare is super legit since he literally just killed someone who was gonna move da moves on cordelia hahahahAHAHAHAH (ngl while arthur is mostly like NO ONE LOOK @ ME I DEF DID NOT DO IT part of him kinda wants to be all SEE THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN U TRY TO GET WITH CORDELIA AND IāM NOT OKAY WITH IT BACK OFF ASSHOLES ;DDD)Ā
alTHO tbh arthurās death stare would probs only encourage romanye as well????? even if he knew how serious it was #facepalmĀ
anyway, I think heād love her spirit and her take on things (even if he can tell that sheās super naive and has no idea what is really going on). and tbh I feel like heās probably going kinda stir crazy and isnāt allowed to go anywhere outside of the palace w/o permission from rowena so heās probably also just super excited whenever new faces show up at the palace just to mix things up a little hahaĀ

Stranger in a Strange Land | Romayne & Cassius
cassiusmontagu:
Cassius hated weddings. Ā He also hated funerals and galas. Ā He hated all functions, really, anything that required turning out for idle chitchat with a populace he neither knew nor respected was wroth his time. Ā Yet still, to this day, if Rowena Godiva called, Cassius came. Ā These days, it was more habit than anything. Ā While he still felt a deep passion for her, it was turned now half to hate and, while he would never thoroughly cleanse himself of the all-consuming love heād once felt for her, most of ithad turned sour and disillusioned far too soon after heād served the purpose for which, he know understood, sheād selected him from the start.
She had fascinated. Ā Engaged and enchanted and enthralled. Ā Sheād invited him into the labyrinth of her personalityā¦only to abandon him there to despair. Ā And despair he had. Ā For fifteen odd years heād been caught in the web of her betrayal, and for fifteen years heād rued the day heād given all heād ever had for a chance at happiness with her. Ā Oh, heād given in, too. Ā In his idle moments he liked to lay the blame at her feet - and certainly without her subtle manipulations he never would have done it - but he wouldnāt have caved if thereād not been something in him willing to do so. Ā Heād wanted her, heād wanted to be consumed, to give his all and prove his worth and strike and succeed. Ā Heād wanted those things. Ā To prove himself and be found worthy. Ā
But heād wanted less noble things, too. Ā Heād wanted to prove himself not only worthy, but superior. Ā And heād cheated to achieve that end. Ā Heād wanted power and passion and heād wanted to wash away the hot despair of failure, that menace which had haunted him his whole life long. Ā Instead of chasing away his phantom, heād courted it and now it hung heavy at his ear and whispered sweet nothings in his ear. Ā He lived in perpetual horror of the ghost heād made. Ā He had thought his success would prove sweet, but it proved the thwarting of all heād thought heād wanted - and soon the sweetness turned sour. Ā Even the things - even Rowena - heād once loved, he grew to hate, poisoned by the horrors he known: the horrors heād wrought.
He watched the bride now with faint disinterest, his eyes trailing motion more than anything. Ā Avelina served a strong, strong wine and he felt half-heady with it. Ā He ought to have known, really, that such a woman as that would not serve something light, but heād underestimated her. Ā He suspected it had not been the first time. Ā Heād underestimated her and overestimated himself and the wine had gone straight to his head. Ā Heād have been glad of it, perhaps, had he been anywhere else. Ā But he had a job to do now. Ā By his own making, he was the last of the Dragonriders, and he ought to conduct himself as such.
It wasnāt until Romayne Vitalis spoke to him that he processed how far gone he was. Ā Framing an appropriate answer seemed foreign, when all he wanted to do was scream, but instead he tempered himself and spoke levelly, which was a small accomplishment in itself. Ā It was almost as though Avelina had hoped for fireworks at this wedding, serving so strong a drink.
āI believe every wedding around the world is intended to be joyous on some level,ā began Cassius, cautiously. Ā āSmiles do not always arrive at intent upon execution, however.ā Ā I am not a man for smiles, he thought. Ā Not now. Ā He smiled. Ā āNothing particular troubles me,ā he added, fixing Romayne with a long, hard look. Ā āBut I doubt I shall smile at your wedding, either.ā Ā He doubted anyone would, least of all Romayne. Ā
Once, heād have half died of jealousy. Ā Had Rowena introduced him too soon after the Purge, in fact, Cassius might have murdered him on the spot, knowing all heād given for a chance at that fate, but nowā¦? Ā Now, oh, a part of him half-envied Romayne for always heād held fast that dream - perhaps it wasnāt for naught! Ā Perhaps, still, their love would flourish! - but even then, he knew still, he loved Rowena no more than she loved him. Ā Oh, heād loved, but too quickly after that night heād realized he loved a shadow, a figment, an imaginary woman who no more existed than a unicorn. Ā
For the sake of that deceit, heād destroyed everything and everyone heād once loved, intoxicated by a fantasy. Ā He wished sheād enchanted him - perhaps he could live with himself more easily then - but heād known what he was doing and heād pursuied it. Ā And heād gotten only disappointment, rejection, horror in return for the price heād paid. Ā But it wasnāt really a price heād payed - oh, heād payed substantial interest in regret, but - it was a price heād exacted from all of Aragoth, plunging them into the hellscape that was the choice heād made. Ā All for a mistaken belief in a false fairytale.
He wondered if Romayne understood the trap into which he walked, or if he too had been fed the lies heād all his life wished to hear. Ā He didnāt envy him, though he did half-hate him for reminding him of what had once been, but he pitied him more than he could ever say. Ā Iāve walked that road before, he would never say. Ā Iād do anything to go back. Ā
āAnd you, Lord Vitalis?ā inquired Cassius. Ā āDoes this spectacle inspire you with joy?ā
āYou doubt it?ā Romayne asked, raising an eyebrow,Ā āWhy should I not smile on such a happy occasion?ā Grinning broadly, even now as he asked the question. Cassius was not wrong, however. Romayne was not looking forward to marrying the Queen. But being her husband would certainly have its advantages. For one, he would get to fuck her. And another, he would get to taunt Cassius about it.Ā
He didnāt like Cassius Montagu from the moment heād first heard stories about him. And now, having met him, he liked him even less. He could have perhaps given his past betrayals if he had, at the least, taken advantages of the power and position he had gained for himself. But he did not even do that. He tore down all those he had loved and now he lived a miserable existence.Ā
So what had it all been for?Ā
āI shall have the most beautiful and the most powerful woman in all of Aragoth as my wife. I could not think of a reason more deserving of a smile. Of course, the wedding itself interests me much less than the wedding night.āĀ
He looked around him. The wine was strong, even by Romayneās standards, and he suspected that it was the wine (and not much else) that made everyone around them look so pleased. The mood the night before had been tense after the altercation between Jon Valles and Alexandir Godiva. It had been clear then (and while less so now, it was there if you knew what to look for) that no one particularly cared for the groom.Ā
The only two people who seemed happy was the couple, themselves.Ā
āOf course,ā He said, raising the goblet of wine to his lips,Ā āWhat could be more inspiring of joy than this?ā He took a sip,Ā āI will admit, it will take some time to get used to your foreign customs. Do you think they will always love each other, as they do now?ā He asked,Ā āIn the isles, we take as many husbands and wives as we please.ā He paused,Ā āBut surely, if there was ever such a woman to inspire a lifelong devotion, it would be your Queen, and in this, I am fortunate.āĀ
