my headcanon for will's epilogue boyfriend is that he is extremely sociable, optimistic and easy-going, the kind of person who is not a good singer but breaks the ice at karaoke by being the first to sing before everybody is drunk enough to try. the kind of person who gets to know the employees on the local grocery store and chit-chats happily with them every time he goes shopping. the kind of person who pulls a friend at a party to dance because he noticed they were just standing there by themselves looking nervous. he works as a practical effects artist because he loves being in movie sets surrounded by people in a collaborative environment. he's dorky and profoundly uncool and able to make a joke about anything, and he is so okay with that.
and I think all of that is initially deeply alien and intimidating to will, and he dismisses the BF's obvious interest as him just being friendly as he is to everyone, and maybe he finds all the quick befriending of strangers a little annoying at first, but then--he becomes so fond of someone who makes every room they're in more welcoming and comfortable for everyone else. he learns to come out of his shell and be a little more open to the outside world because looking at it through BF's eyes makes it all so beautiful and interesting. he realizes this guy who thinks everyone is kind of amazing finds him to be the most amazing of them all. he is not only loved but loved in an obvious, transparent, unabashedly kind of corny way and he adores it.
I'll always hate that Will never got a proper Love Interest in the show, but they could never ever make me hate the bar scene
Will clearly looks so excited for the date.
The way he's nervously fidgeting with his hands at the start. and he's just trying so hard not to smile wide. Like the thought of seeing the bf just makes him so ashamedly happy. This boy clearly makes him so... giddy and nervous?
This is probably the first time he is experiencing a crush that's just FUN &. Happy. With no complicated feelings or angst. For the time, he is in a safe queer space, surrounded by people like him, with a boy (a boy!) that likes him back.
And the way he jumps up with no reservations to touch the bf's arm immediately, like he couldn't wait to be close again. Like, he's so comfortable with the environment he is in.
Baby's literally just experiencing reciprocal love for the first time ever 🥺 and he looks so happy. Idkk man, it's so cute. And to think this all was improvised? Noah really put his whole heart into acting out these 13 seconds
the way people talk about carlton as if he’s this horrible abusive asshole who’s just like lonnie when literally all he did was buy will a drink and hold his hand. the insane levels of homophobia in the bylr fandom needs to be studied.
Well, haven't you heard? It is not homophobic to joke about killing a canonically gay character, the only guy in canon to have romantic interest in Will. It is, however, homophobic to acknowledge that Mike is straight in canon. Maybe you didn't know that before because you don't have their many #filmdegrees and all that #medialiteracy. Homophobia is when someone is mean about my favorite white straight boy.
This being the way the average byler speaks about Carlton on a regular basis.

Crashing out rn
One of the most actually braindead takes I saw people make post-finale was that Mike was messed up for having El be a character in their final D&D game because El didn’t want to be a hero and she “didn’t like/never played dungeons and dragons” because it completely missed the point of that scene.
D&D is the thing that brought all the boys together. It made them who they are. It bonded them. We know that throughout the series D&D plays a major role.
Mike writing El in as the mage NPC isn’t him making her a hero, it’s him including her. In the first episode of the show the party is Mike, Lucas, Will and Dustin playing D&D. That’s how we’re introduced to them, that’s how we know they’re friends. That scene in the finale is meant to parallel that first scene. But what’s different? right, Max is there. Max is a part of the party now. Obviously Max has been a member of the party for a while, but this is a visual way to represent that. “Look at the first scene of the series compared to the last scene and see how far they’ve come”
The reason he writes El in as the mage isn’t him “making her the hero”, it’s him saying she’s a part of the party. She’s not there physically, but she was. El was there. She is one of them. That’s the point. It’s not to force her into being something she doesn’t want to be, it’s to honor the fact that she is one of them, dead or alive.
