eugene roe is in my cookbook.

... let me explain.

(please ignore the very old stain on the page haha!!)

my whole family and i are from louisiana, and when my grandmother died, my mother got a lot of her cookbooks (some ranging as far back as the ‘50s). we cook from them a lot, and today it was my turn to make dinner. i went flipping through, and a name caught my eye. eugene roe.

the cookbook is called river road ii: a second helping. for those who might not know, the great river road is the sides of the mississippi river, and arguably the most famous segment is the river road in louisiana, where it runs from new orleans to baton rouge (the state capital).

the recipes that make up the two river road cookbooks are submitted from members of the junior league of baton rouge. i knew the veteran eugene roe moved to baton rouge after the war, and the cookbook was released in 1976 (my grandmother got it that same year) i have no doubt that this recipe came from him and his wife.

while the veteran eugene was not actually cajun, there are plenty of authentic recipes in here if someone would ever like to try (or you could even buy it yourself!!) don’t be intimidated by the meat in eugene’s recipe - there are plenty in here that don’t call for squirrel ;)

it’s full of both great traditional southern + louisiana plates (both creole and cajun), but if not for cooking, it’s a nice lil vintage book to have around.

anways, that was my little spill for the night. i hope y’all might have enjoyed this as much as i have haha :)
