Mello feels a twinge of guilt for what he did to Sayu. He pays for her treatment anonymously. If he had lived, he would have sent Sayu and her mother money regularly to make sure they were well taken care of.

Something I’ve never liked about death note how to read 13, is the way Near and Mello are listed as having a lot of emotional strength. It’s confirmed that Near is so sensitive he isolated himself from others entirely and we all know Mello is a fire cracker. Neither of those traits display emotional strength. I feel like Obata’s definition of emotional strength is more in line with resilience or repression, depending on how he intended Near and Mellos characters to be.

Near probably has severe survivors guilt and thinks to himself “had I just been more like L they would all be alive...”
