"What were you dreaming about...? You were shouting..."
River looked blearily up at him, dress clinging uncomfortably to her skin âDreaming? Did I fall asleep?â
âYeahâ James replied.  âYou were screaming something so I wasnât even sure at first. Mustâve been having a hell of a nightmare.â
âIâm ever so sorry if I woke you.â She said in a formal tone that was entirely at odds with both her body language and the situation. Rubbing her eyes with the backs of her hands, she shuddered a little bit as scraps of the nightmare tried to invade her consciousness. âEverything was grey and blue and cold. So coldâŚâ
âYou didnât, actuallyâ James said from the chair nearby.  âI was already awake.â He didnât say she wouldâve almost certainly woken him if he had been asleep. No need to make her feel worse for something she couldnât control.  âThatâs all you remember? Whatever it was, you were definitely afraid, orâŚI donât know, but it affected you.â Â
"Afraid" River repeated numbly as she sat up, "Yes, afraid. Cortisol and adrenaline and..."
She trailed off, still trying to shake off the last few memories of the dream. "But you weren't afraid. Weren't dreaming. Don't you dream? Wait, no. Sleep. Don't you sleep?"
"What were you dreaming about...? You were shouting..."
River looked blearily up at him, dress clinging uncomfortably to her skin âDreaming? Did I fall asleep?â

"Wake up! Wake up! It's just a dream!"
"What were you dreaming about...? You were shouting..."
"I woke up because you were screaming so loudly."
"Shh- No, no, don't panic, love. You're safe now."
"It was so real! I swear! He/she was here!"
"I don't ever want to sleep again. What if-what if I dream about that again?"
"If you tell me, it'll go away. That's what my mom/dad always told me and it's never failed me."
"Do you want to go back to sleep, or shall I make you a cup of tea?"
"I don't want to go back to sleep..."
"I'm so scared ... I can't stop seeing what I just saw. It was so vivid!"
"There's really nobody here, okay? Do you need me to show you around to prove that to you?"
"How do I know I'm not still dreaming? You're acting really strangely."
"Let's get you to the shower, you're covered in sweat."
"There's really nobody else here."
"You've got a really bad fever. That must have caused those weird dreams."
"I don't even know what a peaceful night's sleep is like anymore."
"I can't do this anymore. These nightmares have to stop..."
"Shh, it was just a bad dream. Just a dream, okay? None of it was real."
"I can't go back to sleep after that. I need coffee-no, I need a drink, a stiff one."
"How long have you been having these nightmares?"
"I've had nightmares all my life, but they've been really bad recently."
"You get so worked up before you go to sleep, maybe you should try to relax a bit more. Maybe then you'll get some rest?"
"I'd kill for a peaceful night's sleep."
"A dream catcher? Honestly? I'm not a child."
"Nothing's ever helped this. I just need to learn to live with the fact that sleeping will always be nightmare, literally."
"I'm so tired... but there's no way I'm going back to sleep after that."

âYou can do it. Stay with meâ he said. He wondered why exactly sheâd phrased it âIâll be goodâ twice, but now wasnât the time to ask. Â
He took the lockpicks. He wasnât the fastest lockpicker, but he knew how to do it, as long as it wasnât some extremely complicated lock. Then they could be stuck. Â
âIâll get itâ he assured her. But he knew to test the door first. And fortunately, it was unlocked.  âWell, it was easier than I thought.â He put the lockpicks in his pocket.  âWeâre almost out. Once weâre out of here and someplace safe, trust me, Iâll let you sleep for days if you want, but stay awake for a little while longer. I got a car, itâs maybe a few hundred yards away. Heck, you can sleep in there. Just a few minutes.â Â
River stumbled after him, all but dead on her feet. She giggled at the unlocked door, finding it unreasonably funny.
âNot for days. Not days. Donât want to be stuck there for that long. Just need⌠Just a little bit of sleepâŚâ She glanced around, needing a second to let her eyes adjust and take a deep breath of fresh air. It had been so long since she had been outside.
James almost laughed at the door being unlocked, but it was a bit of a tense situation. He had to be alert in case they ran into anyone on the other side of the door. Â
âSleep later, escape nowâ James insisted. He needed to get her to his car soon. He had no idea when the last time she slept, ate, or had a decent time to rest was. Her adrenaline had kicked in, but it could only go so far. Â
He grabbed her hand and pulled her along with him. It slowed him down, but made sure she stayed with him.  âOther side of the treesâ he said.  âYou got enough energy to make it there, I promise.â He didnât know, he just wanted her not to give up. Â
River let herself be dragged, following along as best as she could. She could see the trees and hear what she assumed was the alarm sounding from inside the compound, but anything other than that was outside her realm of comprehension. The throbbing aches she was so accustomed to had dulled under a wave of exhaustion.
" 'm slowin' you down. Gonna ge'you in trouble" she mumbled, her mind drifting "Daddy's gonna be mad. Stayed out too long. Kept you from your studies..."
riverofserenityâ:
Her grin grew with each addition to their basket. âMilk. But maybe also something⌠healthy? Thatâs something we need⌠Vitamins and things for good building blocks.âÂ
She frowned, looking around the store, âThere arenât that many⌠Do they know what a vegetable looks like here? Vegetables are very important. Many many vitamins. They need vegetationâŚâ
.
âVegetablesâŚvegetablesâŚâ He murmured the word to himself like some sort of mantra, eyes darting around to try and see if there actually were any around. Didnât seem like it. Then again, this was just the smallest form of a supermarket.
âMaybe farther in the back,â Eric suggested. He had raised himself on tiptoes to try and catch a glimpse of the area behind the candy shelf. His hand still curled around Riverâs, he led her around the shelf and towards the back of the store â and indeed, there they were; looking a bit pathetic and lost, but it was a start. An eyebrow rose. âYe sure ye wanna buy âem here?â
River frowned and poked one of the dejected looking carrots. "Soft. Mushy. More likely to have bacteria than vitamins. The bad bacteria, not the good kind. They're.... They're doing their best. Trying. Maybe not here then. Should find nutrition elsewhere."
She grinned impishly up at him "or we could stick with the chocolate. Nothing ever wrong with chocolate." She knew that wasn't strictly true, but it was true enough and it suited her purposes.
riverofserenityâ:
âI think⌠maybe⌠you doing this job is your way back. You care about humans because⌠because youâre one of them. Because you need to keep themâŚâ and by extension yourself safe but River trailed off before she could finish the thought. There were some things some people needed to figure out for themselves, and she thought maybe this was one of them. âYou fight this fight to prove your⌠personness. If youâre not human, than what are you?â And what am I? Another unspoken question.Â
âWhat⌠what else is there? Besides the people and the monster-people and the werewolves and demons and⌠usâŚ?â She glanced over at Cara from under her lashes, suddenly not wanting to meet the other womanâs eyes. It was easier to see herself as a person, as âhumanâ when that was the only option, but in this new world full of terrors⌠the multitude of options was frightening.
Cara offered the other woman a small, sad smile, âThere is no way back. Who I was - who I planned on being⌠Everything was demolished. And itâs okay, you can say whatever you want to say, I wonât be offended.â She then shook her head, âI fight this fight to make up for what Analiese and I did - to fulfill a silent promise I made to the people we killed - but I know, deep down⌠Thatâs not possible. As for what I am, I honestly donât know. A monster - remnants of a monster. The ghost, the shell of the old Cara QuinnâŚâ Either way, it was nothing good.
Cara wasnât going to lie to River, but she could tell by the look on her face that she was afraid of the answer to her own question. So she carefully replied, âThereâs a lot. And itâs an ever-changing and ever-expanding world. But that doesnât matter. That doesnât affect you, thatâs my problem. My job. I keep journals, catalog creatures, do research. I study and know as much as I possibly can so that everyone else - so that people like you donât have to.â
River hummed thoughtfully, taking in all the information and trying to process it. "That's a very..." she searched for the right word, "dismal way of looking at it, but I understand. It's... scary to even think about the limits of what one is capable of, let alone to know it...."
"Everything effects everyone and the needing to know, the cataloguing. It makes people, the normal people, feel safe. Knowing things and putting them in neat little boxes with a pretty ribbon and padlock on top." Something outside the window caught her attention and her head snapped around to try and catch a glimpse before they sped away. "There was.... Someone died. A normal person death. Quiet accident. Should have stayed away. Shouldn't have made that turn..."

âJaâŚâ he agreed, nodding his head slowly as if in trance, âjusâ ta be safe.â It didnât take long for the basked to be filled to the rim. The thief put literally every single package in it that read âchocolateâ in any way. Simple bars, caramel, nuts â there was no difference to him.
Next were waffles and cookies, some bags of chips. All the while he didnât let go of Riverâs hand, keeping the promise he had given her earlier. âAnything specific ta drink?â He turned around to her.
Her grin grew with each addition to their basket. âMilk. But maybe also something... healthy? Thatâs something we need... Vitamins and things for good building blocks.âÂ

James could just barely feel her holding on to his backpack. It was for the best, as long as she didnât pull him back. It would make it harder for them to get separated. Â
âNo, not yetâ he said.  âYou can sleep as much as you want when we get out of here. I can get us to safety. You can sleep on the ride. But you got to stay awake now, you hear me? And I ainât leaving you behind. Not after getting you out of there in the first place. You can make itâŚâ
They hadnât run into any trouble, and had now made it to where heâd got in the building in the first place. Outside could be a problem. Theyâd be exposed for a good minute. But as long as the woman had the energy, they could probably outrun anyone who pursued them.  âWeâre almost there. Stay with me.â
She stumbled after him almost blindly, stuck somewhere between her present predicament and a memory threatening to take over. âIâll⌠Iâll keep going, I promise. I can keep going. You donât have to hu- Iâll be good. I promise Iâll be goodâŚâ
When they reached the door, River offered him the lock picks she had borrowed from him earlier. âI can⌠if you need me to but youâll probably be fasterâŚâ River didnât want to admit that she didnât entirely trust herself to be able to pick the lock, she didnât even have a feeling for whether the door was even locked in the first place.Â
âYou can do it. Stay with meâ he said. He wondered why exactly sheâd phrased it âIâll be goodâ twice, but now wasnât the time to ask. Â
