Common spotted cuscus (spilocuscus maculatus). Spotted cuscuses are very interesting animals: not only their markings vary a lot from individual to individual and in tone and intensity, they also have two naturally occurring very distinct color morphs (either predominantly gray or predominantly orange) AND their coat colors are a sexually dimorphic trait! Females are solidly colored and males have spots.

Pictured: male and female individuals of both color variants.

Interestingly enough, both males and females can be fully white as well! The cuscus pictured in the third reply is decked out in a fashionably unisex coat.

We watched this female jaguar resting during midday heat (40+ degrees). Suddenly, a massive male jaguar jumped out of the bushes. The female's adrenaline kicked in and her pupils turned blue for a second, as you can see on the shots.

In August of 2022, I had the pleasure of hiking around a local mountain, a prairie south of me and also returning to Hurricane Ridge to photograph some beautiful wildflowers. I found some Lesser Burdock (Arctium minus) and Wild Mint (Mentha canadensis) growing around my local mountain. I got to see some more Orchids that are native to my area as well, that of which being the Flat Spurred Piperia (Platanthera transversa) and the Western Rattlesnake Plantain (Goodyera oblongifolia) and another plant known as an Eyebright (Euphrasia nemorosa). I also really enjoyed finding the Tapertip Onion (Allium acuminatum) and White Bog Orchid (Platanthera dilatata) growing out of a seep up at Hurricane Ridge that month too (last 2 photos).

good morning dirtbag nation last night I cowboy camped up on a ridgeline tucked beneath hemlock saplings right alongside one of those big intermountain power lines that look like giant men walking across the mountain tops. the wires were so close that there was a constant crackling hum of electricity that almost disguised the sound of the rain pit-pattering on my tarp. when the water hit the cables it made hot blue flashes like little lightning birds on the wire, and you could almost track the sheets of wind in the darkness because of the ripples of light.

a contender for the most beautiful snail I’ve met: this exquisite Helicina from Costa Rica, which was delightfully abundant where I found it.

at only around 7-8mm long, they would glide around on green leaves like little jewels. I’m happier now knowing that these exist in the world

if you look closely, you’ll notice that it has only one set of tentacles, which lack eyes; the eyes are situated at their base. this hints that the fact that helicinids are distantly related to other land snails (who’ve got the familiar eyestalk pair + oral tentacle pair arrangement) and are instead closer to marine and freshwater snails like nerites and some limpets—they convergently evolved to come on land, and I’m so glad they did!

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

Wolves don't purr, but wolf spiders sure do! To attract a female, a male will rub their pedipalps (small appendages around the mouth) together to produce vibrations. These vibrations travel through the dried leaves the male stands on, and producess a low purring sound! Check out the sound below:

the magellanic plover is a small wading bird found in the southernmost portion of south america. they are the only member of their family, and unusual among the plovers. they feed on invertebrates gleaned from the sea floor, along with worms caught in the bill. they are the only wading bird known to feed their young with food stored in the crop.

This bird takes grooming to a new level. The American Dipper (Cinclus mexicanus) feeds on aquatic insects, happily jumping right into swift moving streams and rivers in order to retrieve its food. The Dipper stays nice and warm however due to an insulating layer of down underneath waterproof contour feathers. By preening extensively, the Dipper spreads body oils that maintain the waterproofing and smooths ruffled feathers in order to protect the downy layer.
