Many facial recongnition programs using majority white databases so if they are programmed with only white data, they don’t know anything else. Science is never free from bias and programmers and designers have biases that are reflected in their coding

My dad worked in an office building where they installed those. One day two women came out of the bathroom asking all the women on the floor to come to the bathroom.

One of the women was black and couldn’t get the soap dispenser to work. The other was white and had no trouble. In their experiment of a few dozen women, all the light-skinned women could get it to work and none of the dark-skinned women could.

Bias is everywhere. Don’t let people tell you technology is neutral.

This is validating to read. I always struggle to get the automatic facets to finally work and to stay on long enough to wash my hands. Forgot about the bias bit. I'm only moderately grateful facial recognition is bias because of surveillance and the police state. But it's really painful realizing how little, if at all, black people are even seen. Now we have modern technology that also continues to render us invisible.

On March 22nd, Dean Steed, a Black Trans organizer and activist, based in Atlanta, was arrested in Cherokee County, Georgia, after a routine traffic stop. After being stopped for a broken tailight, two White officers demanded that Dean, exit the vehicle, and proceeded to search entire car, including the trunk. The officers found a vape pen and a couple of cartridges. Dean was immediately arrested and placed into solitary confinement because he is Transgender, and can’t be housed with the other inmates.

Dean is being charged with four different counts, including a felony for “Possession of THC Oil” (cannabis oil). In addition to being charged with a misdemeanor for “Possession of Drug-related Paraphernalia” (vape pen). In Georgia, THC Oil is considered a controlled substance, listed in the same classification as crack-cocaine and heroin. Any tiny amount of THC Oil up to carries a mandatory minimum sentence of a year in jail.
