Gert gently pushed the door open, the breeze of the outside night air hitting her face. It was refreshing after a long day of work, and for a moment, she forgot why sheâd gone up there.
She quickly shook the thought off, eyes landing on the ledge of the rooftop where Mylo sat.
It wasnât anything like sheâd really seen before from him. His posture didnât seem purposely relaxed, his hair wasnât perfectly done like heâd normally have it.
A part of her didnât know how exactly to feel about that.
ââŚFinally found you.â Gert found the courage to speak up, shoving her hands in her pockets as she walked towards him.
âHey, Gert.â His voice sounded unnaturally quiet. Yet in a way, it felt like she was hearing him for the first time.
She sat beside him, legs dangling off the ledge, staring into the view of the Undercity and onwards to Piltover. He hadnât even looked her way yet, so she decided to do so first.
And for once, she couldnât read him. His face was blank, eyes not exactly distanced but not entirely focusedâjust completely neutral. ââŚSorry, I kinda barged in. Want some time alone?â
âYouâre good,â His eyes finally drifted to his hands. âSorry, I justâŚguess Iâm not feelinâ like myself right now. Kinda tired.â
âYeah,â She swallowed anxiously, choosing her words carefully. âTomorrowâsâŚâ
âThe anniversary of Viâs passing. I know.â He grimaced.
ââŚWish I couldâve met her. She sounded cool.â
Mylo snickered, reminiscing in the memory. âUnderstatement. Vi was the best. I mean, when she was with us, I felt like I could do anything, you know? Scary stuff wasnât scary when she was around.â His smile grows shaky and uncertain. ââŚA part of me still cant believe sheâs gone. I know itâs kinda stupid after so long. I mean, seven years, you know?â
âItâs not stupid.â She reassured him. ââŚI know you miss her. All your family does. And that doesnât reallyâŚgo away, right?â
He shrugs, remaining in the silence for a bit before lifting his head up. âSeven years.â He repeated to himself. âI can see the penthouse we robbed on that day. I stared at Topside for hours up here until my eyes learned that that,â He pointed out into the distance. âThat tiny piece of roof hidden by other buildings is the one.â
She squinted, trying to make it out amongst the blur of the night, trying to look at the exact direction he pointed at. As she did so, Mylo continued, âItâs still soâŚthere in my head. If I close my eyes, and I really think about it, Iâm in that penthouse again. I can smell the debris around me, and the the way my body was frozen in pain, and the sound of Powder crying and the Enforcers running, the cold tiles under me when I fell over, justâŚeverything. Itâs still there.â
âGosh...â She murmured weakly, unsure of what exactly to say.
âI justâŚitâs hard to get out of bed every time tomorrow comes, so IâŚâ He hesitated, and Gert straightened herself to look at him. ââŚI spend the whole morning thinking of what I couldâve done differently to stop it. Stop her from leaving us so early. Like, maybe if Iâd picked that stupid lock on the balcony faster, maybe we wouldâve made it out before anything happened. If Iâd helped her carry the stuff, maybe she wouldâve made it to a point where she wouldnât have died. If IâŚâ He grimaced. ââŚIf I hadnât been as big of a jerk, maybe Powder wouldnât have been so desperate to prove herself. Because we all were. And I still made her feel horrible for it.â
Gertâs expression twisted with complete shock. Her body went slack, heart aching with sympathy. This version of Mylo sitting beside her felt so different from the one sheâd grown to love and know, yet in a way, sheâs known this Mylo just as long. She just hadnât been able to see him yet. But heâd always been there for her whenever sheâd wanted to talk. The real him.
ââŚMylo,â she finally had the courage to speak, taking in a deep breath. âI know she meant a lot to you. And I donât want you to stop grieving her, thats not it. ButâŚyou canât wrap yourself up into wanting to change the past. Because you literally canât, and youâll just feel worse.â She scooted closer to him. âI know I sure as hell did when I lost my folks for the first time. I was thinking the exact same way you are. ButâŚI learned that instead of focusinâ on what couldâve been, we gotta focus on what can still be.â She forced a small smile onto her face for his sake. ââŚI think Vi would want that, donât you?â
A small smile formed on his lips, yet his eyes were still hurt. âProbably.â He looked up at the sky. âIt justâŚfeels wrong to move on without her sometimes, you know? I wanted her to see who I am, who I became. Like, whenever somethinâ big happens in my life, I think âoh, I gotta tell Vi about this,â And thenâŚI remember I canât anymore.â
He tried to blink away the glossiness in his eyes, even as more tears welled in them. ââŚI know sheâs proud of who you are, âLo. Youâre one of the best, funniest, kindest people I know.â Gert smiled softly, reaching for his hand so he couldnât wipe away the emotions from his eyes. Their gazes locked then. âI know youâre hurting, and I donât blame you. I know she meant a lot to you. But you donât have to force yourself to move on without her, because sheâs always gonna want to be with you. Always has been. But I promise you, her love for you guys hasnât changed one bit, no matter what. Donât forget that.â
He stared at her, the confident facade heâd put on days prior showing no signs of having even existed. âYeah. Yeah, umâŚâ He sniffled, voice hoarse and soft from pain, finally moving his hand so their fingers intertwined. ââŚSorry, I donât know why Iâm soâŚâ
âDonât.â She interrupted him, and that was enough. Mylo leaned onto her shoulder, silent tears and faint sniffles leaving him as she quietly wrapped her arm around him, letting him pour his heart out onto her without another word.
Whatever words she couldâve said were conveyed just fine in the silence, only the breeze of the night passing through. The view in front of them comforting their vision, and if she focused hard enough, she could hear Myloâs heartbeat from beside her.
After a few moments, the breeze grew slightly stronger. Mylo wiped away the remnants of tears from his cheeks. ââŚI remember this old story Vander used to tell us. That the airâs carrying the souls of all the people we lost.â He explained, voice no longer entirely coated with sorrow, now a new sense of contentment present within his tone. âAnd that whenever we feel the wind, thatâs Jannaâs way of bringing them right to us.â
Gert smiled, and the breeze brushing her hair suddenly felt much more vivid. ââŚThatâs beautiful.â
âYouâre beautiful.â She chuckled at his remark, her hold on his hand growing stronger.
âAlright, enough of you.â She weakly shoved him away, to which he laughed. The sound alone made some of the weight on her shoulders drift away.
Mylo wasnât perfect, but he always managed to make going through her day easier. With his smile, and his jokes, and the way heâd somehow always manage to get a laugh out of her. Always managed to bring the best in her. Gave her hope for the next day, whatever came of it.
